Kishi Bashi's cover of Beirut's "A Sunday Smile" is one of my favorite songs, and now videos, of 2013. Just came back from The XX live in Paris (at le 104, which is conveniently located 30 seconds down the street from my place, nothing too fancy up in here, really it's the pits). Had a pleasant time with Sabby (Editor of WS.fr with me and one half of the parentals : Mother). We had an enjoyable smooth night sailing through the short-ish set of London's muched talked about trio. Beirut's latest video from The Rip Tide is a melancholic yet peaceful journey over the ocean.

Zach Condon and company are still riding the high of their successful 2011 release and are making sure that you're not forgetting about them not that we're halfway through 2012. To help bring some attention back to The Rip Tide , the band has teamed up with director Houmam Abdalla for a video to the album's title track. The theme of the video is simple enough with a wondering yacht that finds it's way into what looks like the inside of a lava lamp.

More often than not, today’s music videos have absolutely nothing to do with their auditory inspiration. Rather than acting as a subservient mercenary, these visual aids rule over the Kingdom of Non-Sequitur with a haughty pride and an army of Richard James’s leering face . Beirut exploded a few years ago out of nowhere and quickly became the indie rock darling he is today. Beirut 's evocative musical style lends itself splendidly to videos, and directors like Sunset Television , Vincent Moon and (as chris mentioned ) Alma Har'el have each successfully their own visual touch his songs. But I don't think I've seen a better match for Zach Condon's minstrel ballads than director Houmam Abdalla 's stunningly beautiful video for "The Rip Tide". The video begins fairly conventionally, an abandoned yacht drifting in the vast ocean, but takes an enchanting turn around the 3-minute mark that I think truly captures the whimsical romance of the track.

Beirut mastermind Zach Condon’s songs are often strikingly visual – not only do Condon’s lyrics summon up filmic narratives, the music itself often seems to tell a story, too. According to Condon , “The Rip Tide,” the title track from his 2011 record, seemed incomplete – until director Houmam Abdallah created this incredibly beautiful video that works perfectly as a visual accompanient to the song’s swelling strings and horns.
