While most artists start off in a band and end up going solo as their career progresses, Ben Harper started out solo and is now creating new collaborations as his career evolves. Each new partnership is different than the last and adds unique new layers to an already rich musical career. As great as it to push the boundaries of music, it's appreciated to see an artist like Harper embrace
Since the beginning of the aughts Ben Harper has released albums with The Blind Boys Of Alabama, Relentless7 and Fistful Of Mercy as well as his longtime band The Innocent Criminals. Tomorrow, Harper will return to the "solo" format with the release of his tenth studio effort, Give Till It's Gone . The 11-track record features an appearance from Ringo Starr, who co-wrote and drums on Spilling Faith and Get There From Here, while Jackson Browne lends his vocal talents to the track Pray That Our Love Sees The Dawn. Harper recently released this [...]

Filed under: Music Appreciation Actress Nikki Reed portrays vampire Rosalie Hale in the wildly successful ' Twilight ' series, whose latest installment, ' New Moon ,' is currently breaking all kinds of records. But when Reed comes home, she concerns herself with records of a different sort. An avid and active music fan, she says that lately "it's nonstop Ben Harper in my apartment." Next
My goal when writing about music is often to be as reductive as possible. That’s partially for you the reader, and partly for me. While I probably can’t write 3000 words on the new album from The XX, I also doubt you’d want to read a treatise like that. My ...

Photography by Suckcess Have I told you lately how much I love Our Society , our little music brigade, of sorts? It's not just the Basement Required Listening selections, the beautiful vinyl rips, or just the incredible album suggestions , no, it's way beyond that.... it's their ability to love music in all it's forms, not judge people for what they've connected to, and their desire to have a little place to escape from the generally snarky and douchy internets (and real worlds) and just come find, enjoy, [...]

I'm making my first trip to Bonnaroo this year. I especially look forward to catching Wilco, Phish, TV On The Radio, DBT and Booker T., People Under The Stairs and Galactic. I plan on skipping Bruce, Santogold, "Shut Up And Let Me Go" and Snoop. Don't get me wrong, I love the old Snoop. You don't want to miss Béla Fleck & Toumani Diabate. For the complete lineup (click here) . I would like to avoid the mud people and the paint people. [...]

It's the Super Bowl weekend and I don't give a shit. The season is over for me when my beloved Colts choke in the playoffs as usual, but I still used to look forward to the big game. It could be the ho-hum competition this year between the "at least the defense can score points" Steelers and the second coming of Kurt "p aper or plastic" Warner. Or perhaps, it's the hype of all those stupid ads you've got to watch because everyone will talking about them Monday. [...]
by james siciliano Per the suggestion of “Mike” (a dude I met yesterday with a CamelBak hooked up to a box-o-wine), I stopped by “Hippie Hill” on my way to the festival. And as he promised, the ganja was as plentiful as the drum circles and unwashed body parts. After haggling with a Jamaican woman named “Momma”, I procured said goods, and bounded down to Day 2 of this epic festival. MARY JANE'S LAST DANCE BY TOM PETTY: [...]

day two. aside from two moments of technical farts during radiohead's remarkable set last night and a bottleneck at the exit that had people pulling down fences and unleashing swarms of angry bees, which afterwards had us icing down a sting to the jaw, friday proved a rousing start to the festival. here's a quick look ahead to our most anticipated sets for today, in order of appearance. (again find your festival map and stage & slotting assignments here .) the coup - my favorite mutiny [...]

I apologize that this list is kind of cheating, but that's only because there have been two really great Beatles cover albums released in the past few years. I've still never seen "I Am Sam", but the soundtrack is amazing. In fact, I think Ben Folds' version of "Golden Slumbers" can totally hang with Paul's, no question. The second album most of these songs come from, "This Bird Has Flown" was a tribute to "Rubber Soul" released in 2005. I originally thought that we had Michael Jackson's failing finances to thank for these cover albums (which [...]

in this week's issue of the new yorker pop music critic sasha frere-jones , in an article entitled "a paler shade of white: how indie rock lost its soul," writes : If there is a trace of soul, blues, reggae, or funk in Arcade Fire, it must be philosophical; it certainly isn’t audible. And what I really wanted to hear, after a stretch of raucous sing-alongs, was a bit of swing, some empty space, and palpable bass frequencies—in other words, attributes of African-American popular music. There’s no point [...]
Ben Harper 's 9th original album Lifeline comes out today on Virgin Records. I've been appreciating the relaxed and spontaneous vibe, especially since I found out the story of its birth into this world: it came to be in Paris over a mere seven days, recorded straight to analog tape after being worked out and perfected during soundcheck rehearsals on tour. I am excited about this one, as I've written a couple of times before; there are some delicious [...]
In honor of JK popping his Ben Harper cherry this past week in Central Park, and to get Top ready for his upcoming show at Merriweather Gross Pavilion this Sunday, I am going to throw down some more goodies I have. Originally a submission for the I AM SAM Soundtrack, this ended up as a B-side to the "Diamonds on the Inside" single in France. You can also see him perform it on his PLEASURE AND PAIN DVD. Amazing cover. Amazing. MP3: Ben Harper [...]
The 2006 Austin City Limits Music Festival is September 15th through the 17th in Austin , in the heart of the Texas hill country.
