Just before the new year, Radio 1 DJ Benji B teamed up with a string ensemble for a one-off performance that you can now watch online. Benji B brought the Grant Windsor String Ensemble to the legendary Maida Vale Studios and DJ'd for around an hour while the ensemble played over the top of tracks from the likes of Flying Lotus, Radiohead and James Blake. Benji B took to BBC Radio 1 yesterday with a 16-piece string ensemble. With the help of arranger Grant Windsor the ensemble reinterpreted a bunch of modern electronic, dance, and hip hop tracks including TNGHT's "Higher Ground," James Blake's "Love What Happened Here," and Drake's "Headlines" as Benji B mixed in the DJ booth behind them. No offense to Canadians, but I rarely hear anything EDM newsworthy coming from that side of the continent. Benji changes all of that. His new track "Steel Eyes" takes some of my favorite musical elements—sexy female vocals, a sweeping acoustic guitar, pumped up synths—and skillfully crafts them into an ethereal euphonic track. The level of quality production on this progressive house banger sets the bar high. "Steel Eyes" leaves me wanting to hear more of what Benji has to offer, and I'm sure he won't disappoint. We don't know much about Canadian producer Benji but his debut single, "Steel Eyes," has us curious. Progressive house is currently one of the most stagnant sub genres of dance music so we weren't expecting much from the tune - however, Benji's effort is enchanting. The track employs a variety of catchy elements like an acoustic guitar and indie vocals while maintaining the synths we've come to expect from productions of the progressive house persuasion.
