What do you know about electro cumbia? If you've never heard of it before, worry not...we've got your back son. Sancocho e' Tigres is the brainchild of well-known global bass blogger for Mad Decent, Tropical Bass, Hat + Hoodie, Rebel Records head man and my good homie, Caballo . The album spotlights some of the best cumbia producers from Central and South America like Javier Estrada, The Binary Cumbia Orchestra, den5hion, Daniel Klauser, bleepolar, Gux Swadharma, The Pobretons, and Caballo himself and their ability to blend cumbia with vallenato, balkan horns, dubstep bass, reggaeton and [...]

One of the most difficult tasks I've ever faced happened a couple of weeks ago, when I was invited by influential Melbourne community radio station 3RRR FM to present a selection of the most influential cumbia songs, from its beginnings as Caribbean folk music to the latest digital mutations... Leave it to the employed to be financially AND aesthetically motivated to get to the music the unemployed students don't have time for. This certain employee, popularly known as Disco Shawn for his Tormenta Tropical and Icee Hot parties as well as his Bersa Discos label ventures, is also an editor at XLR8R magazine, current champion of underground sounds most likely to appear in a good club. What I like about XLR8R is their ability to stay within a manageable aesthetic spectrum, creating a coherent and unique consumer experience of [...]
Fresh out the SXSW loony-bin, I'm filled to the brim with potential posts and inspiration. Never before has there been such a fusion of forces in one place, and I'm humbled to have been witness to all of it. A major conjoining force this week was San Francisco's Cumbia party Tormenta Tropical , hosted by Disco Shawn and Oro11 . They're record label Bersa Discos has been recent home to digital interpretations of Cumbia, its artists reaching from Los Angeles to Buenos Aires. Linking sounds and artists must be their specialty, as an [...]

Describing the global dance music landscape may be one of the skills I hate to love most. I often hear, “Oh you’re a DJ, cool, what kind of music do you play?” I say, “Well, I play a lot of different music, I suppose I’m a bit of a ‘multi-genre’ DJ. I’m mostly focused on global dance music, particularly street-wise bass music. Actually, anything heavy in bass from around the world.” At the risk of pursuing a PhD in order to describe the sounds I like, some do , I try to stay content being vague, circuitous, and [...]

Sabo & Cassady - Kuff Kumbia [ mp3 ] new Bersa Discos EP folks this time around NYC's own Sabo brings the dope beats hallelujahhhhhh

The gloomy San Francisco summer has got me day dreaming about warmer climates. I'm over due for a vacation and Brazil, Argentina, Peru are starting to look pretty good. Warm surf, bloody steaks, beautiful women and all night parties seem like a pretty good antidote to 11 straight months of 50 degree weather. To fit my mood I've been bumping everything off of Sol Selectas and Man Records and saw Sabo kill at Bersa Disco last Saturday. San Francisco, when are we going to extend bar hours to 4am like every other fun city in [...]

When Mwamwaya took the stage, it was almost as if the universe itself showed up simply to sing to us and smile back. Mwamwaya was accompanied by two female counterparts, one dancer and a back up singer supplying the show with enough vivaciousness to keep that shit popin'. The whole thing felt like an old school block party, just in time for summer—with dancing in the streets.

[Getting back into town today after a little road trip. Thanks to my pinch-bloggers the past few days; happy birthday to Stewart Copeland; and here's a full plate of music goodies from which to sample tonight:] My trip to the heartland yielded a good read or two, including this Riverfront Times interview with Son Volt's Jay Farrar on his band's new album "American Central Dust." The quintet plays the Wiltern tonight with the Cowboy Junkies . ... The "Also I Like to Rock" free concert [...]

Going by what I'v been posting so far this year, there's no denying I'm a big fan of what's coming out of Argentina at the moment. ZZK records are just killing it in the tropical beats department and show no signs of slowing down with a totally bullet proof roster of artists. Not so long ago they released their second edition ZZK sound, a compilation of work perfectly summing up the signature sound they have come to represent over the past year. I'm not going to offer some crazy exclusive blog track, that'd be [...]

We like to support good people who are releasing good music that we might not listen to if they weren't promoting it. And some people say labels are useless. Here's Bersa Discos (Discoshawn & Oro11's label) 5th release, showcasing Toy Selectah 's production magic on 6 track. You can listen to them and buy the EP on Turntable Lab . Tzochitl Soundsystem - Hay Guey (Toy Selectah Remix) Toy is coming on this side of the globe for a few dates: Que [...]

The Bersa Discos crew of Disco Shawn and Oro11 host their next Tormenta Tropical party at the Elbo Room this Saturday night. If you're looking for electro, rap, or the Argentinian cumbia sounds that inspire the duo's Bersa Discos label, Saturday's party is made extra special by a set from Montreal DJ/producer Ghislain Poirier , whose bass-driven work touches on electro, dancehall, grime and rap for an uniquely heavy dance sound. I'm only now catching up on Poirier's recent stuff, but [...]

Bersa Discos got a new release out since last week, Bersa Discos #4. The have gone in somewhat of a different direction for this one, for a label focusing on cumbia and other tropical sounds, and got tracks from Brooklyn DJ/producer Uproot Andy and Dutch producer Sonido del Principe . They gave us a mp3 from the release called "La Vida Vale La Pena" and it's by Uproot Andy. You might know him from his recent Guacharaca Migration mixtape. He's also an unofficial cohort of DJ Rupture's Dutty Artz collective. He [...]
