It's been a weird year here in tiny rural Monson, MA, and it keeps getting weirder: after a devastating tornado in June, and a hurricane and flood in August, last week's freak snowstorm hit us hard indeed, felling thousands of trees across the vast landscape, and knocking out power and phone lines for the vast majority of residents. To help out, once again, I'll be re-gifting 40% of all donations to Cover Lay Down from now until the end of the month to support local rebuilding efforts - a gift sorely needed, with [...]
Leave it to reading about the origins of humans from a tome about pre-historic fish and microbes called Your Inner Fish to really get the creative juices flowing, something indie/pop songwriter Bess Rogers found out first hand in between writing songs at her Brooklyn apartment last winter. Taking some time from touring as a solo artist and as guitarist in Ingrid Michaelson's band, Rogers found she became obsessed with the book and the idea of looking at "everything we do in life as a product of evolution." And lo and behold, new [...]
Tonight's concert picks: When it comes to indie-rock bands that are composed of romantically involved couples (Mates Of State, The Rosebuds, Handsome Furs), Hank And Cupcakes offers something slightly off-kilter. For one thing, the married pair hails from Israel; for another, along with their silly adopted monikers, the two sport a cheerfully irreverent sensibility. The video for "Hit" features Hank And Cupcakes cavorting in nothing but body paint. With growing popularity and a new album in the works, Hank And Cupcakes is poised to spread its dance party aesthetic beyond the band's Brooklyn base. Hank And Cupcakes performs [...]
Lelia Broussard attracts the attention of Atlantic Records and Rolling Stone
Lifted from Brooklyn singer/songwriter Bess Rogers ' recent eponymous debut EP , "What We Want" has just the right amount of medium-wattage energy for a Friday afternoon...and a lovely melody to boot. Like DC fave Allie Moss, Rogers spends some of her time as a member of Ingrid Michaelson's touring band, a relationship that obviously has rubbed off a bit stylistically on the production of Rogers' own songs. She's heading off to a cabin in Maine to lay down some new tracks she wrote in January -- stay tuned for more later this year. [...]
Lelia Broussard has the kind of bluesy voice that is perfect for romantic comedy films. It fills up the room with hope and warm optimism. Throughout most of November, she's been cruising the west coast on her CD release tour with Bess Rogers, and now they're onward to the east coast. In fact, she'll be in the PA area the first week in December, the location where she recorded her first record at 15, Louisiana Soul. Broussard is a ragin' Cajun born in Lafayette, Louisiana. Now, she has a handful of hits off her new album, [...]

Allison Weiss, Bess Rogers, and Lelia Broussard / Garfield Artworks/ 9.28.2010/ 8:00 pm Words by Brendan Sullivan These three ladies are on their Quest For Glory Tour . The name may have something to do with an upcoming album from Lelia Broussard , a recently-released one from Bess Rogers , and . . . well, I guess Allison Weiss is along for the ride, but that's fine by me. I bought Allison 's latest album (released last fall and funded via [...]
Forget about any hint of self-absorbed navel-gazing when it comes to Brooklyn singer/songwriter Bess Rogers ' sharp-edged new EP Presents Bess Rogers (September 21) -- any remnants of ponderous soul-searching are happily checked at the door. It's also abundantly clear from the range of Rogers' five new songs that while she'd like you to hum that melody or dig into the lyrics, she'd also request that you get up and break a sweat. Dance, headbang, strap on that air guitar, but move, please. We think it probably has to do with her variety of musical stages: from [...]

She could've been a farmer in those clothes, but luckily, Jenny Owen Youngs decided to be a talented and totally hip indie rock queen. Well, on her way to queen anyway. Yesterday saw the release of her sophomore effort, Transmitter Failure , and an appearance at Philadelphia's Johnny Brenda's, with local (as in a house down the block from JB's) fellas Jukebox the Ghost . The two are currently touring the country together, overlapping in each others' sets. Youngs was joined by Bess Rogers , amongst others, for a [...]

Brooklyner Bess Rogers shows us how Ingrid Michaelson got known with her debut solo effort. Tags: Album Reviews , Bess Rogers , Brooklyn

The name "Decisions Based on Information" feels so nerdy...but hey I do fancy nerdy girls. Bess Rogers trying to portray that nerdiness is an accomplished musician kind of like the female -Spencer Krug (I guess Spencer will now always be mentioned due to the gazillion side projects he's in) playing in The Age of Rockets, and playing along the likes of Jenny Owen Youngs (I know her by the single "Fuck Was I") and Ingrid Michaelson. Bess Rogers' music is a mix of pop and folk though with a hint of experimentation. I debated back and [...]

Bess Rogers - I Would Never Bess Rogers - Sunday The title of Bess Rogers' first solo project, Decisions Based on Information is perfect for the album. It's a warning to all listeners that Bess Rogers, a bright classically-trained composer from Brooklyn, makes most of her musical decisions according to a textbook. When first popping in her album, I was hoping to hear a new female vocalist who would give the hairy indie boys in graphic tees a run for [...]

Before I blaze in with my new favorites, I have a few new (well, new at the time) artists to whom I want to give a bit of press. For those of you that were paying attention, I had hoped to feature the music of the Sunshine State. Well, Florida was a musical bust so far. Beyond the interview I did with Deaddolphin (and one that I've got in the pipe) Ionly found one other artist worth mentioning. Jonathan Cho is a Tampa based singer-songwriter who was willing to represent for his home state and he's pretty good. [...]

New York based singer songwriter Bess Roger's is a busy lady; she's been playing with Jenny Owens Young, Ingrid Michaelson and Age of Rockets. Now she's got her solo stuff to play and it's no surprise that she's got a hold on a great pop, easy on your ears, but more importantly I love See Me? See You! off her new album Decisions Based On Information . I wish I was one of the people at the end singing the chorus! You can get that here or here . [...]

Up until the release of her debut full length, Decisions Based on Information , Bess Rogers was a seasoned musician who occupied her musical life with the likes of Jenny Owen Youngs , Ingrid Michaelson , and synth /pop band, The Age of Rockets. On Decisions Based on Information , Bess shows off her songwriting skills by giving the listener a wide variety with the saloon atmosphere of "Modern Man," and the carnivalesque "Waltz Me." The prancing "Earthquake," comes with a welcomed spaciousness and adds on to a record of fairly catchy tunes. [...]

Aside from a solo career, Brooklyn's Bess Rogers hangs around playing guitar for a few good women that you may have heard of. Jenny Owen Youngs? Ingrid Michaelson? Also, she plays bass and synth with the established Age of Rockets. As surprised as I am that she had time to write, record and release the beautiful Decisions Based on Information , I'm even more surprised at how lovely it turned out. In the vein of Youngs and Michaelson, Rogers has no trouble standing on her own two feet. Part circus band, part indie pop, [...]

This week brings the solo debut from Bess Rogers to the Sunday Spotlight. If you're not familiar with Bess' name, she's a consummate performer who's been involved with music since she was a little child, listening to her mother playing harpsichords that her father built, and learning to play them herself at age 6. As she hit her early teens, Bess started writing her own songs, and then went on to study music at SUNY's Conservatory of Music. Since then, she's played guitar for artists such as Jenny Owen Youngs and [...]
