Review/Listen: Wavves – Afraid of Heights

Review/Listen: Wavves – Afraid of Heights To an extent, your opinion of California's Wavves will perpetually be stuck on their breakthrough album,  King of the Beach . Was it a hyper-active party filled with ruckus you regretted the morning after or was it the landmark memory of an amazing summer? Either way, in the past three years, Wavves has been a rock band that has suffered too many retrospective discussions. They had the not-so-stellar follow-up EP, Life Sux , which inadvertently informed many listeners that the party was getting lame. Which meant, [...]

The Babies – Our House On The Hill

The Babies – Our House On The Hill Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars The project between Woods ' Kevin Morby and Vivian Girls ' Cassie Ramone isn't exactly a new project, but their newest effort for Woodsist seems like the side-project finally got some much deserved focus from the two core songwriters. Our House On The Hill is the perfect execution of sunny pop with a ramshackle approach, giving listeners exactly what we've been looking for since we first got wind of the band. "Alligator" takes [...]

Live Review // Best Coast; The Borderline, London

Live Review // Best Coast; The Borderline, London Best Coast The Borderline , London Tuesday 18th September One of my main gripes with the internet is it’s passion for hyperbole. Seemingly every record is labelled “ album of the year ”, every song “ a game-changer ”. Every cymbal hit, chord struck or melody sung is deemed better than the one which preceded it. Here at GFP we promote new songs as “ the best new music ” because we genuinely believe that it is. However, even the best sites and magazines can’t predict every band [...]

Best Coast – The Only Place

Best Coast – The Only Place Best Coast - The Only Place ( Mexican Summer ) Talk about an about face:: I was ready to declare Best Coast’s last album the greatest record of all time moments after succumbing to its immediate charms. I was preparing for a similar infliction with The Only Place , Best Coast’s sophomore album, an effort that sees jack-of-all-trades Jon Brion tweaking the band’s surf rock worship into the posher confines of a more upscale zip code. And by doing so, Brion completely dismantles every hint of [...]

Best Coast- The Only Place

Best Coast- The Only Place ALBUM REVIEW
I've returned to Best Coast's music almost out of a morbid curiosity just to find I'm even less in love with this album than I was the California rock and pop outfit's debut. WATCH THE REVIEW

[Review] Best Coast: "The Only Place" (5.0)

Review/Listen – Best Coast – “The Only Place”

When this album leaked, many Best Coast fans began a roller-coaster journey that I was able to witness while trying my hardest to get a hold of a physical copy.  The first step was to ostensibly scream about the album while leaving a trail of download links and photos of vocalist/guitarist Bethany Cosentino and lead guitarist Bobb Bruno everywhere.  This intense jubilation was followed by what I consider to be the biggest pivot from child-like delight to intense frustration and anger towards [...]

Best Coast – The Only Place

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars Chances are, if you know anything about Best Coast , it’s that front woman Bethany Cosentino really likes cats.  Or perhaps you’ve delved into the tuneage of said cat-obsessed female and found that she also creates some pretty sunny California pop jams. Best Coast have shown they can crank out some quick paced and fun jangly pop, but can they be more than that? Substance has never really been [...]

Album Review: Best Coast – The Only Place

Album Review: Best Coast – The Only Place "On most of the tracks, after the nervous strum of the guitar sounds, you’d almost expect Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley or Blink 182’s Tom DeLonge to break out singing about crashing a house party or brushing up against a crush’s lo cker." Best Coast - The Only Place (2012) 4.0/10 Mexican Summer « When I’m with you » had the record player scratchiness that a picture would have being bleached by Californian sun, bringing to mind a dog-eared portrait of laughing youngsters with just enough candidness so as not to fall into to prepubescent teen-pop and conjure up a kind of universal nostalgia of summers past – conveying [...]

Best Coast – The Only Place (2012)

Best Coast – The Only Place (2012) Por Eric Olsen “ Why would you live anywhere else? ” pregunta Bethany Cosentino en T he Only Place , “ We've got the ocean, got the babes / Got the sun, we've got the waves ”.

Review: Best Coast – The Only Place

Best Coast The Only Place out on 5.15 MP3 | CD | Vinyl | Stream C+ Surf rock is on its way back. Whether it’s the punked-out bliss of Wavves or the crisp pop-hooks of Tennis, surf has creeped out of its murky L.A. basement and back onto the airwaves. Claiming influences in the Beach Boys, the Sex Pistols, and everything in between, the genre’s 21st century revival has been a [...]

Album Review: Best Coast

Album Review: Best Coast "Another delightful effort centered on failed relationships and longing for the beaches of California..." Best Coast | The Only Place Best Coast’s 2010 debut album, Crazy for You , was the type of record that made a person feel like going to the beach to dance at a luau under a palm tree. Their breezy tunes, indebted equally to the melodies of The Beach Boys and the guitar fuzz of lo-fi indie , provided the listener with fun hooks and served as a very effective summer soundtrack. Their new album, The Only [...]

Best Coast – The Only Place

Best Coast – The Only Place The difficult thing about reviewing reviewing the new album from Best Coast, The ONly Place, is that it is totally immaculately and fun and sunny. Singer Bethany Cosentino has crafted eleven solidly middleweight songs, each supported by the solid instrumental work of her talented-yet-shadowy bandmate Bobb Bruno and the hallmark gutbucket punch of producer Jon Brion. The Only Place is an effortlessly pleasurable listen; the most common references for the band's sound are the Beach Boys and Fleetwood Mac, which more or less captures Best Coast's obvious grasp of pop songwriting. Cosentino hits all the sweet spots, and the listener [...]

Shimby Presents: Live at the Empty Bottle

Shimby Presents: Live at the Empty Bottle Shimby Presents: Live at the Empty Bottle works as more than just a live album. Recorded by local musician and music archivist Shimby McCreery , it's an audial snapshot of tweener Chicago, which has taken stock in thrashy garage rock that sometimes is played with a metallic fierceness and others a near quirky looseness. But perhaps more importantly, the record seamless integrates local favorites with popular indie buzz acts proving that Chicago knows what's up. Near the record's mid-section, the [...]

Download: Best Coast – The Only Place

Download: Best Coast – The Only Place Best Coast's The Only Place is fast becoming one of the most hotly-anticipated records of the year. This, its first single and title track will do nothing to change that. It's a cleaner, ever-so-slightly poppier take on the fuzz-rock of their debut, with more rounded, shinier production. If that sounds bad, don't worry, it's great. It will be interesting whether or not the album will handle the expectation vs. delivery conundrum that has stumped so many second albums before it. So far though, so very good. The Only [...]
