A new single from beloved RAA ( as previously ranted ), with a rendition of 'Eye of the Tiger' as only RAA would think to cover. But the keeper is their 'Drain the Blood.' I don't know if it's distinct from the version in their debut album. It is quite a catchy song. Drain the blood Eye of the tiger This is what they look like. RAA benefits from a voice that could shut down [...]
I've been writing a weekly feature (among other duties) over at Insulinfunk . Check out the reviews here . They usually go up on Fridays. While you're at it, check out The Rawking Refuses to Stop!'s Best of 2008 features . That's right, only 6 months later. Now that's some thoughtfulness I can get behind.

web site I'm not sure why more people aren't smitten with the grim tales $100 writes. Honestly, if you sit down and soak in Simone Schmidt 's gruff voice and embrace her penchant for narratives full of pain and suffering that are balanced by Ian Russell 's comfortable country arrangements, I find it baffling you could ignore Forest of Tears . One listen to Stew Crookes ' pedal steel and the beautiful melancholy of Nothing's Alright will warm the heart of any true [...]

With the first cut-off date for Polaris Long-List nominations approaching, and this being our first time being involved, I thought it would be a lot easier to jot down thoughts and ideas before the deadline, instead of just scanning the list and writing down 5 records on due date. Obviously, we've covered a ton of Canadian releases this year - one or two a day, 5 days a week - but we've missed some quality ones as well. I haven't decided my Top 5 or the order they fall in but right now these are the nine records [...]

web site || myspace Right now you are probably sick of reading tweets like, "SXSW is amazing", "I just saw the Ting Tings 3X!!!!", "standing beside Yeezy and Frodo" or "hungover but breakfast tacos are mmmmm." It's pretty obvious that the wheels that turn the music blog world grind to a halt for the few days that Texas hosts 90% of the music nerds and indie bands. But fear not my friend, this little Canadian outfit soldiers on, and what a treat we have for you today. Montreal's The Darling DeMaes [...]

The New 1920 are ready to rock the world all over with there no messing sound. Currently supporting fighting with wire the band are making all the right noises and have been compared to as a cross between Lostprophets and Sum 41.If consistent uptempo rock with chanty choruses is what you are looking for then The New 1920 are for you. The band are surely on the fringe of success as an album is close to being delivered which I personally can't wait for. The guitar playing is quite literally electric with ripping melodies and crashing drums [...]
The Junos are Canada's version of the Grammys and they are set to be presented this year in Vancouver on March 29th. This is always interesting as we see some of Canada's best indie acts get national and even international recognition. This morning, the list of nominees was unveiled. I will cover a couple bands worth mentioning amidst the usual major label drab. In the category of NEW GROUP OF THE YEAR we find a few familiar faces. Most notably Montreal's Plants and Animals [...]
Presenting a list that has been months in the making. It's been edited on no less than 5 different computers and has been painstakingly researched by team of 1. Enjoy, and when you're done reading, I'd love to know what song, artist, or album you have or will check out because of Stoplight Sleep. Albums 1. Why? Alopecia 2. The Dodos Visiter 3. M83 Saturday = Youth 4. Los Campesinos! Hold On Now, Youngster 5. The [...]

I'd like to make a little list of my favorite tracks of '08. You could look at these tracks and also maybe make the assumption that these are my favorite albums, you might be right but I dont want to confirm one way or the other.....See, I like to keep the readers guessing. It keeps them coming back to GBS, but thats blogging 101. Time to get serious though, I shouldve posted this mix about 17 days ago but have been busy trying to feel out '09. Trying to just dip [...]
I realize it's not 2008 anymore, but if you're like me & have to backtrack on music year(s) to find really good stuff .. Well you need to listen to this all Canadian top 103 list. Thanks to my good friend Becca. Just click here <- and let the music take you somewhere. For me, it's taking me in bed with bronchitis, soothing my soul, rather than my throat. Adios. -Gina Argentina
How dare the premier ignore my invitations. He'll have to go. So, too, the bunch he luncheons with. It's second on my list of things to do. At the top I'm stopping by Your place of work and acting like I haven't dreamed of you and I And marriage in an orange grove. You are the only thing in any room you're ever in. I'm stubborn, selfish and too old. I sat you down and told you how
I know when we make up these year end lists that, like judging all art, no pick can be deemed wrong…it's just an opinion, right? We'll it's my opinion that these are the three worst lists concerning the top albums of 2008. 3.) Letter's Home From Camp (Mark) Grabbing the top spot is sex on fire screw up's, Kings of Leon. Ok , sure, maybe it's an album that hit Mark emotionally. Then Death Cab at two, MGMT [...]
1. Let's get the obvious, important, ridiculously brilliant one out of the way first, shall we? Obama. Let's not forget, this time last year we didn't even know who the candidate would be, let alone the president. And now we have Obama. Excellent. That said, I still reckon too much is made of the man's race. Is America ready for a black president? Well, no, clearly not all of them are. But who

I did intend to do a full top ten, but seeing as I ran out of time I'm gonna list (in no particular order) the top albums of 2008.. I didn't get time to cut down my shortlist either.. MGMT - Oracular Spectacular - This is the only album I ranked and I did so at Number One. A little cliched? Probably.. Predictable? Yes.. They're topping loads of lists for this accolade (including the NME) and so perhaps this wasn't the most shocking, but the truth is that I was praying for a 2008 release [...]

Right so whilst this isn't strictly limited to music I thought that lookin forward to the highlights of the coming year would prove enough to make us wet waiting for the new year to arrive and force some to reconsider their suicide plans.. 2009 looks to be another great year in terms of all things cultural.. Chipmunk After a host of mixtapes, features on countless remixes as well as a few brilliant singles (including the latest 'Beast'), this London MC is set [...]

Social networking site, MySpace has completely transformed the way we discover and listen to our music. Aspiring musicians are uploading their music everyday to an audience of over 100 million people, worldwide. It's famously known for assisting in the launch of artists such as Lily Allen and Arctic Monkeys and this week, MySpace has chosen to reveal the eight most popular musicians on the site for this year. So, who reached the number one spot? Well, unusually, it's an act that's not released any material since way back in 2005. The band in discussion are also non-human. Guessed [...]

It's been a pretty amazing year for music around the UK, and following on from my top 10 of 2007 , here is my top 10 of 2008. 10 - Viva Stereo - Roar Lion Roar You've probably not heard much about this Scottish collective. However, their third album was a surprise favourite for me - anthemic, accessible, slightly My Bloody Valentine and yet still so gorgeous. Read more about Viva Stereo here . Favourite: Knee High Boots . [...]

The Justice ticket contest is now over and I've selected our winner! When I wrote "Send us a Top 5 list of your year in music" . I did not assume anyone would take it LITERALLY . I expected lists of top albums, tracks and remixes all of which I got, including some really excellent submissions. However, one person took that statement and ran with it, sending me a list of his Top 5 Musical Moments of 2008 . It's a great, personal look into the world of one of [...]
I'm going to go ahead and kick off our year end wrap-ups today with my favorite track of 2008. I first heard La Roux on the Kitsune 6 compilation a couple months back and her track Quicksand has been on eternal repeat ever since. Only 20 years old, Londoner La Roux (aka Elly Jackson) is a young lady full of slick sass. With a vocal style akin to Sophie-Ellis Bextor and Annie -esque 80's tinged pop beats, La Roux has me sinking deeper into her musical quicksand. [...]

Worst movie? I can reveal that after going through what I can only describe as cinematic torture, 'The Day The Earth Stood Still' is by far the worst movie I've ever paid to see. Some decent acting but overall it was awful. Reccomend it to someone if you're in the mood for an evil prank, though I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy.. Moving on to music - we've seen some impressive breakthroughs this year however 2009 also looks to be a year of promise. This is a list compiled with the top bands that you need [...]
