![[Listen/Download] – New Song By Sic Alps – "Do You Want To Give $$"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3081253_lg.jpg)
Sic Alps made some minor waves back in 2008 when their track "Message from the Law" appeared at number ninety on Pitchfork's top 100 tracks of the year. "Message from the Law" was a gritty garage anthem, perhaps most notable for its ability to eschew the trappings of 'garage rock' that had become so prevalent by 2008. It was endlessly replayable due to its simplicity. As we turn the calendars forward to 2011, Sic Alps have a new album on the horizon. "Napa Asylum" will be released on Drag City on January 25 and features 22 [...]

Since muxtape left and reincarnated itself for bands, I wanted to share my old 2008 reidmix.muxtape.com with you, it made for good ole-fashioned tapecraft: The Distance ( lala ) by Dntel Head Spins ( mp3 ) by High Places Tane Mahuta ( mp3 ) by The Ruby Suns Man's Heart Complaint ( mp3 ) by {{{SUNSET}}} Seeker of Truth by [...]
As the year is coming to a close many "Best of 2009" and "Best of the Decade" lists are popping up all over the place. While I will have my Best of the Decade list up in the next week or so, I usually do my "Best of [insert year]" at the end of January since several of the December limited releases do not go wide in Toronto until the New Year. Unfortunately I procrastinated on posting my "Best of 2008" in January and figured it would have been rather odd posting it during the summer. Now seems [...]
What a decade, huh? This one's notable as having been spent entirely in NYC, and entirely of the digital age which changed the way everybody listened to music. (Maybe not my parents but everyone else.) We had more access to everything, and less to to spend with it. That said, there was no shortage of good music, though I don't think anything hit me quite as hard as the previous decade -- partly due to age, party due to aforementioned information overload. There's nothing from this year, as I feel it's too close to [...]

Each year before posting our top albums of the year, we post albums we missed the previous year. It's typically an embarrassing admission of indie music oversight and this year is no different. I'm ashamed to call myself a music blogger after looking at this list. 1. Henry Clay People - For Cheap Or For Free ( Buy at Amazon for $7.99 ) This is one that we honestly thought was on our list. It wasn't until a couple of weeks after that we realized that [...]
Last Updated: November 27, 2009 I had originally created a film "report card" after being inspired by a post on the Between the Seats blog earlier this year. As 2009 is quickly coming to an end, I have decided to expand the list to include all past and future reviews on this blog. As I plan on updating the "report card" regularly moving forward, I shall be including a link in the sidebar for easier access. Consider it your one stop shop for finding reviews on this site. [...]
[ed. note -- Hey, whut whut, has it really been three months since my last update? Probably the 4,500,000 points I have in Bejeweled Twist were responsible. If you asked for a song from me during this time, and you didn't get one, write in again. I just sent a few out to people who commented last month. Check your inbox! And your spam box, ha ha.] Today's music is actually the music of last year, but I'd never heard of Blind Pilot until my brother-in-law pointed me toward their 2008 album "3 [...]

I went a slightly different direction for 2008's songs list - there's some crossover with yesterday's albums list because my favorite three albums happened to have my favorite three songs of the year, but other than that I tried to spotlight 20 singles and album tracks by artists who didn't quite stand out enough across the board to crack the albums best-of. Get your left-field on after the jump and remember, the Rawkblog pledge drive ends this weekend - please give now ! 5. Hayden - "The Van [...]

Women / photo by David Greenwald Apologies for the tardiness, folks, but with some distance from the - let's just go ahead and say it - shitty trends that characterized 2008, I feel pretty good about the year. It didn't offer a lot of new classics to my ears, but it was a fantastic time for indie-folk (excluding Bon Iver: Shitty!) and new artists, or at least those who were fresh to me - I became a Hold Steady and Mountain Goats convert, and the debuts of Fleet Foxes, Women and White Hinterland, among others, have [...]

[mp3] WHY? - "The Hollows" P4k has an interview with WHY? frontman Yoni Wolf this morning, in which the musician reveals the details behind the trio's brand new album. Eskimo Snow is the title of the follow-up to last year's brilliant Alopecia , and it's expected to drop in the fall via Anticon. The band recorded the album during the Alopecia sessions, and was initially due for release before the Best Of 2008 opus [...]
Oh no, blog neglect! Better post something before blogrot sets in... Sometimes I wonder why I pay attention to the hype on new bands, because the music is often disappointing. I hate to sound like an old crank, but the amount of new music out there has increased exponentially in the last two decades, and the quality can't possibly equal the volume. I guess I worry that I will miss something

[mp3] Holy Fuck: "Lovely Allen" (No Age remix) L.A. noise-punker's No Age , specifically Randy Randall on guitar and Dean Spunt on vocals/drums, are not for lack of work. Aside from readying to embark on a massive tour with Deerhunter and Dan Deacon (dates T.B.A.), No Age is preparing to release and EP on SubPop later this fall; the EP, still untitled. Randall and Spunt are ready to record a follow up to last year's highly acclaimed, Nouns , which found its way [...]

They're the ones responsible for one of our favorite videos of 2008 , and now L.A. noise rockers The Mae Shi deliver some good old-fashioned animated bloodshed and carnage in the video for "The Lamb And The Lion", the latest single from their highly acclaimed album HLLLYH . The Mae Shi - "The Lamb And The Lion"
After much deliberation (and no small amount of procrastination), I finished a mix of my favorite new songs from last year. Download the zip file here. 1. "Archaeologists" - Wintersleep 2. "Konny and Jim" - Love as Laughter 3. "Lucky Lucky Luck" - Evangelista 4. "Come to New York" - Paramount Styles 5. "Volatile" - The Old Haunts 6. "I Admit My Faults" - Eddy Current Suppression Ring 7. "She

The ever-prolific Bradford Cox of Atlas Sound and Deerhunter releases another installment of his virtual 73 series. Landing the #2 spot on our Best of 2008 list, The Tripwire welcomes any additional material from Cox's solo project. Posted last Thursday, March 19, the brief 73 contains "Solo or the Square" and "Memorial Corridor". The former features a calypso arpeggio over top Cox's marked wash production. "I got tired of the good life," he sings in his token murmur. "Memorial Corridor" patiently [...]
But alas! A person can never really master the art of goodbyes, but I'll try to make this good, for 2008. The year brought a lot of fresh insight on the music industry. When we thought indie music couldn't have propelled up higher in the charts, it unwavering strength with the masses rough it to it's zenith (this year). We have had good and bad experiences fro mgreat artists, tracks we can't help but abhor and love. Now, I'm going to give you guys the best remix tracks of the year, and the ones [...]

Well after 9 months since I first started this post, I decided I should finish it before the year is out. As I'm wrapping up the 2009 songs in my queue, I look back to the coulda-beens of 2008 and how much happiness each band / album gave me. I love this series as it gives me the off the path list of great bands that you may not have heard of from year-end lists. This list is in no particular order and each album occupied my focus for some time during 2008. [...]

Forgive me for I am late — so so late — but here is my top 10 albums of 2008! I really struggled with this list because I felt very confident with my top 10, but the order I rearranged over and over, struggling with what I loved in CD-R form, what I loved earlier in the year, and what I love now. Some choices were released in 2007, which surprised me and I will start a new series: Hey You! Last Year. Even though I keep this list within 2008, one selection (Bon Iver) was "technically" released in [...]
Yet another artist that should've made my Best of 2008 albums list. Russian Red is the performing name of Spaniard Lourdes Hernandez and she possesses a voice I'd happily move mountains for. Darkly romantic, her music is the kind that would suit an evening in front of the fire in a wood panelled room lit only by flickering flames. Although 'Cigarettes', the opening track from her gorgeous 2008 release I Like Your Glasses came in at #30 in my Top 50 Songs of last year, I didn't get a chance to listen to her [...]
DATELINE: Louisville, Kentucky - One of the music projects I was most excited about last year was a quietly amazing instrumental duo from Kentucky... The Photographic are guitarist Jamey See Tai and drummer Chad Blevins. The duo use their own instrumentation, some synth effects and looping to create a sonic presence that rivals that of hugely talented instrumentalists Explosions in the Sky. (Their sound has odd breakthrough moments of clarity and I swear I can almost hear the Cure. It's pretty amazing.) Galaxia Records [...]
