I've toyed around with the idea of updating this blog some more, but I'm done. I will still use the name Sons Club in another fashion down the line. I am working on a different blog that will actually be updated, but I need to toss this dead weight first. 2009-2011 was a huge 2 years of transition for me, and now that I have some sense of stability (aka job) Thanks to all of you for reading, and oddly enough still keep reading old posts, it was super fun, but I want to do it better. I love you, [...]

I picked up this album yesterday on limited white vinyl for $15.00 with shipping to Canada. This is something to give thanks for on this Canadian Thanksgiving...or as I know it, Thanksgiving. Everything about this album is easy; its beauty, how you immediately find yourself a bit more comfortable when it is playing and then how you will keep it playing over and over. The only hard parts about it is learning the spelling of Frank's last name and knowing the fact that it came out a couple years ago and you are just purchasing it now. [...]

I am kind of having a Gregory Alan Isakov moment. Okay, I am fully having a moment. Always been a fan of this guy ( why isn't he famous anyway ) and after receiving my vinyl copy of "That Empty Northern Hemisphere", I just can't get enough. God damn...the combination of his voice and perfect harmonies is almost overwhelming at times. He has pitch perfect delivery to go alongside his ever pining acoustic ballads - even if they aren't all really ballads per se. I thought you all needed to be immersed [...]

REPOST: I thought I would ease my way back into posting after vacation by doing a re-post of an artist that I found myself 're-discovering' while on said vacation. Sarah Winchester's EP, Northeast Kingdom Demos is a beautiful selection of songs from the A. Weather front woman and is highly recommended for fans of stark acoustic folk artists like J. Tillman, Lotte Kestner, et al. FYI, I think you have to sign up for the Team Love Library to get to this EP, it is was a free membership and download if I remember correctly. Enjoy. [...]

Today I am showing some love for Bandcamp as the defacto music hub for new and emerging artists. Two artists featured, one with an album so new it is actually a pre-order and one that is a favourite from a couple of years back. Let's start! ~~ "En Garde" is the new album from Puzzle Muteson via Bedroom Community. I purchased yesterday (pre-order gets you the download immediately) already knowing this album would be good and so far it is not disappointing. The songs are lullabyes, floating in and out [...]

This is a re-post from December 2009 - I found myself listening on the way to work again and just had to say that this is a great album and it deserves another spin & post. One of my fondest memories of this album is that I started listening at the end of the year in 2009 and went to a southerly beach vacation on January 1st. While listening to songs like Backyard, Dye Your Hair & Be Safe while at the same time watching the waves come in with just a hush of the sound of them (listening in [...]

Former Black Flag front-man, actor, social activist, and all-around wordsmith, Henry Rollins , is embarking on a spoken-word tour simply titled "50." The 33-date tour coincides with Rollins' 50th birthday and kicks off March 17 at the Whitaker Center in Harrisburg, PA, continuing through mid-April. Rollins – affectionately known as Hank - will be stopping at smaller venues, sharing stories and anecdotes from his chaotic career, thoughts on criticism he's faced, and further reflections from his first 50 years. A lively performer with a stint as a stand-up [...]

I enjoy making and reading lists just like any guy who regards 'High Fidelity' as one of his favourite books / films. End of the year lists are great fun, they are a great way of discovering new music, seeing what other people have put as their favourite albums of the year and countless times you end up discovering something you'd previously missed, with so much new music available it's so easy to miss out on wonderful albums. As a means of discovery is one of the reasons why I maintain this blog when there are countless other things [...]
Macklemore ::: photo by Josh Lovseth One of our favorite records of 2009, Mackelmore's emotional epic EP Vs. is getting the remix treatment. The remix will feature re-imaginations by some of Seattle's finest producers including Jake One and PSmoov. However, it's the pairing of Macklemore and Fences remixing "Otherside," Vs.'s emotional centerpiece, a brave confessional of [...]

Just was remembering how much I love the self titled album from Isbells after Adrian did a post on the album the other day over on I Pick My Nose. Stand by this album - a total great listen and criminally overlooked last year. So lets watch and listen to what most people missed in 2009. Re-listen: "Time's Ticking" - Isbells, from 2009's self titled album ( Purchase ) Please visit Isbells and spread the word [...]

Just thought I would share as I was listening to the above album on the way to work. The album is spectacular - this is roots banjo folk at its best. Released last year to little fanfare (why, oh why) this album is a mix of full on banjo honky tonk to slow folk(y) balladeer material. And it has grit. Grit that finds itself placed between an 80 year old tough as nails bluesman to a young punk rocker. And it really works. I have said many times that I can get down with a lot of folk themed styles [...]

New Music Video Debut ! Someone You Should Know Writing this to you today from a downtown hotel in Austin, TX - mere hours after being indoctrinated into our first night of unabashed debauchery at the South by Southwest Music Festival . It's been quite a ride and it only officially begun today. We are headed off to the Convention Center now - and later for another round of official and [...]

Man, it's been over a week and I haven't even had the chance to thank everyone for coming along to our warehouse party! I'M SORRY GUYS - THANKS FOR MAKING IT SUCH A SPECIAL NIGHT!!! Work has been a joke this last week - I had done 40 hours by the afternoon on Wednesday... ANYWAY - what an amazing night it was! Apologies to those who couldn't get in, we were 40 over capacity by 12.30 - meaning that even those who had bought tickets were getting turned away (if you would like a refund, please email me [...]
Cinephile Cine-Files is an annual dossier compiling several film bloggers top 10 lists. Version 3.0 features the most selective group yet. It's a wonderful, perhaps nerdy publication; but if you even need some sort of guide of what was hot on the big screen in 2009, this is a friendly tool. According to our little movie club, the Mexican documentary Intimiades de Shakespeare y Victor Hugo by newcomer Yulene Olaizola was the most engaging film of the year. Honorable mentions went to A Serious Man, Cinco Dias Sin Nora, Coraline, Fantastic Mr. Fox and Inglorious Basterds. [...]

Gomorrah (Gomorra) As much as I enjoy films like The Godfather and Goodfellas , I admit that they have skewed my image of the Mafia. Those films have glamorized the mafia lifestyle to a point where it is easy to forget the average folks who end up suffering the most. Which is why a film like Matteo Garrone's Golden Globe nominated work, Gomorrah , is so refreshing. It is a startling reminder of how so many innocent, and at times misguided, lives are destroyed [...]

#22: Metric - Fantasies Metric self-released Fantasies across pretty much all the globe - Lord knows if they had too, after all it's not as if Live It Out was a flop. In the four years since the Canadians unleashed that effort (they released their unpublished debut Grown Up And Blown Away in 2007) they honed their knack for anthemic, punchy indie pop. Fantasies is full of it, the most consistent record of their career thus far - and their second Polaris nomination. The pace [...]
