I did a little playlist shuffle on January 1st to get a prediction of how 2012 is gonna be. A musical version of Tarot cards, if you will. 1. Athenaeum - Flat Tire 2. Bare, Jr. - You Blew Me Off 3. Cross Canadian Ragweed - Burn Like the Sun (Hmmm, seems like its going to be a rough start in the romance area) 4. [...]

Bowery Electric: CBGB's Exile X-Mas Jahn Xavier with Lenny Kaye, and Tish & Snooky Here's a very special Christmas Playlist treat straight from DJ Tone . Once upon a time there was a little club called CBGB's OMFUG which was owned and operated by Hilly Kristal. He developed a home where a legacy of bands that defined NYC's underground music from The Ramones, Blondie to the The Patti Smith Group could perform. Every month these wayard punks that defined an era of music get together once a month. Punks in Exile from that [...]
"In the latter months of 1969, somewhere between the moon landing and the start of the Vietnam draft, the concerts at Woodstock and Altamont, Alex Chilton decided to take back his life. During that annus mirabilis, while the world experienced a generationally sparked social, political, and cultural upheaval, the 18-year-old Chilton was in the midst of a revolution of his own." "For the past year, Chilton had been strapped in a creative, professional, and personal straitjacket. He was the lead singer of a million-selling band, The Box Tops, but [...]

The late Alex Chilton became an indie rock icon as the frontman for The Box Tops and Big Star. Between his time with those two acts, however, the songwriter spent some time in the studio recording solo material for the first time. Now, Omnivore Recordings has collected those songs for a new compilation titled Free Again: The "1970" Sessions . The CD and digital versions of the set compile 20 songs, six of which have never seen release. The vinyl edition collects 12 songs over two LPs, with one track being previously unreleased. Stream [...]

Welcome to Flannel Fest 2011. Thrift-store plaid, you're over here in Line 1. Everybody in the long-sleeved Henleys, weathered denim and Urban Outfitters ruffles, you're there in Line 2. You in your dad's vintage C.P.O., you're up front with me. Oh, and are those a few Old Navy flannel hoodies I spot? You must be here to see Blitzen Trapper ... back of Line 3, please. ||| Concert photography by Scott Dudelson I note that a lot of you showed up early to see [...]

Last night Dawes concluded their co-headlining tour with Blitzen Trapper at the Music Box in Hollywood. The band's return to their hometown seemed to be perfect timing, as lead singer and guitar player Taylor Goldsmith hardly had a voice after the 2-month stretch. Somehow though, Taylor's voice was hardly affected, and his incredible tone and energy moved the crowd to a soul shaking sing along; necessary at any proper Dawes show. Their hometown show also attracted some heavy hitters in the music industry, both on stage and off. Industry figure and author [...]
That Game Theory's entire catalog is seemingly terminally out of print is a great travesty. Certainly they were one of the most important purveyors of '80s pop music in America. Over the course of three incredibly ambitious and almost flawless records, they had as good a track record as almost anyone besides XTC for consistency.

If you missed out on scoring a copy of Omnivore's test pressing version of Big Star's Third on Record Store Day, you have a second chance. Omnivore has 500 copies pressed on clear vinyl available for sale exclusively at their web store . The price is steep (in my opinion) at $60, but that is much less than you would pay for a copy on eBay. I was lucky enough to score a copy in store on Record Store Day, and I don't remember paying that much for the black vinyl version. But I know [...]

It's been a weird year here in tiny rural Monson, MA, and it keeps getting weirder: after a devastating tornado in June, and a hurricane and flood in August, last week's freak snowstorm hit us hard indeed, felling thousands of trees across the vast landscape, and knocking out power and phone lines for the vast majority of residents. To help out, once again, I'll be re-gifting 40% of all donations to Cover Lay Down from now until the end of the month to support local rebuilding efforts - a gift sorely needed, with [...]

The last time we heard from The Vinyl Skyway, it was the charming alt-country strummer "Elvis Costello" . It was much to my chagrin upon discovering the song, to learn that the band had split ways since recording. Thankfully, The Vinyl Skyway has returned from hiatus, and even more thankfully have come back with the new album Return of the Dead Surfer . The entire recored is an absolute Sunday morning album full of beautifully-crafted pop songs who's bright guitars and sweet vocals point directly to Big Star. Personal highlight "Misty Morning Fog" is [...]
On a gorgeous SXSW night in 2010, Glossary was performing an outdoor set during the Ninebullets.net showcase. As the crowded, tree-covered patio's patrons settled in for the set, the band finish... Continue reading "All Time Top Five: Glossary's Joey Kneiser's All Time Top Five Big Star Songs" >
