Words by Jacob Barron The general consensus on Valentine's Day is that it's an exploitative holiday invented by heartless greeting card companies and "the man" to try and wring a few heterosexist consumer dollars out of the wasteland that is the six months between Christmas and summer. However, it also happens to be a holiday designed by vindictive couples in an attempt to rub their happiness in single people's faces. Or it's a day to take some time and think about how to best let your sweetheart know just how much he or [...]
Well - it's been awhile since I last posted due to a number of things keeping me busy, but I wanted to share a list of my favorite albums that arrived in the first half of 2010. Last year, there was a single standout album that stuck for me immediately and was never superseded at any point after it came out. In fact, if it came out this year, it would also be the best album in the first half of 2010. And that album would be............ Bitte Orca by Dirty Projectors. But [...]

MP3: Dirty Projectors - Temecula Sunrise (live at Other Music) Re-releases are stupid, honestly. They're usually only worthwhile if an album has gone out of print or grown to seminal status over the years. I bet you're expecting me to defend the October re-release of Dirty Projectors ' brilliant "Bitte Orca", but I won't because it's fucking stupid. The good thing to come from this is that the great Other Music pressed a white label vinyl release [...]

HANK ALTOGETHER: My second fav. album of last year, the Dirty Projector's Bitte Orca is getting an expanded release. The tracklist features everything from the album as well as the Temecula Sunrise EP, the Projector's recent cover of Bob Dylan's "As I Went Out One Morning" and a couple other odds and ends. If you dropped cash for the Temecula Sunrise EP, I don't know if it's going to be worth it to get the expanded release. That is unless you like want to own everything with Amber Coffman's face on it. Like, I don't know, [...]

One of last year's biggest critical successes, Bitte Orca , the seventh album from Brooklyn band Dirty Projectors, is to be rereleased in expanded form. Bitte Orca disc 2: 01. Fluorescent Half Dome (Live at Other Music) 02. Temecula Sunrise (Live at Other Music) 03. Two Doves (Live at Other Music) [...]

Not content to follow suit, Dirty Projectors' use of space opens the sonic horizon to a dimension undefinable.

Just back from Australia, The Dirty Projectors stopped by the Aussie Rock Radio Station, Triple J, for a "like a version" session with the gang. They did an amazing harmoniously rich Dylan cover of "Dark Eyes" Check it! Dirty Projectors - Dark Eyes (Bob Dylan)

Yeah, I know...it's March. Presidents Day has passed and McDonalds is already selling Shamrock Shakes...a little late for the Best of 2009, but here we are. I never claimed to be one for timeliness, especially of late. For simplicity sake, the numbers associated with this list are just arbitrary...it's pretty hard to rank things objectively, but the following is what I liked best about the shitty year that was 2009: 1. Dananananakroyd - Hey Everyone! Cheeky band name aside, Hey Everyone! is an [...]

This year at Hidden Track, we concocted a little experiment for our year-end Best Albums of 2009 list. Instead of picking the old fashioned way - subjectively - we opted for something a little different: a collaborative, collective list that incorporates the opinions of everybody here at HT. To begin, we devised an all-encompassing list of around 100 nominees and populated it in a Google spreadsheet - essentially anything that anybody who writes for Hidden Track liked at all, made the list. Then we invited our crew of writers to independently vote on the [...]
Red Alert! There's quirky goodness coming out of Brooklyn! Ok, so weird music from cet borough is nothing new. That said, I promise you these guys are exceptionally weird and the results are just wonderful. The Dirty Projectors have been lauded by just about everyone as the hottest experimental rockers of 2009. Their most recent album is titled Bitte Orca which is German for "please, Orca" (ie a killer whale). What prompted the obscure name? Frontman David Longstreth just liked the way the words sounded together. (here here!). Anywho, [...]

It's gonna be weird writing 2010 in the top left hand corner of my lab book but I'll get over it. 2009 was a great year for music and is partly why I started this blog. Here (as promised) are my top albums of 2009. 11. Lady Gaga - The Fame Monster It took a while but Lady Gaga has a knack for a CHOON and she's a very talented lady. Fair enough she cribs from the best pop songwriters (ABBA, Ace Of Base WTF haha) but I really can't wait to [...]

Our finest 20 records of the year are the ones that are closest to our collective hearts from a San Francisco band's debut to a Kosmische pile-up between Tangerine Dream, Sunno))) and proggy ambient techno to the return of some French Anglophiles, to our highest charting Irish albums, a band on their 13th release, an icy Swedish enigma and a slew of Brooklyn based bands. Albums of 2009: 75-51 | 50-41 | 40-31 | 30-21 | 20-1 [...]

Dirty Projectors picks up where Talking Heads left off two decades ago in integrating the muscularity of rock with the liquidness of funk. It's as if key Projector Dave Longstreth has taken to heart George Clinton's advice, "Free your mind and your ass will follow". The inquisitive spirit that pervades Bitte Orca is encapsulated in "Stillness is the Move", where songcraft, arrangement, and production work together seamlessly. Electronic bass samples and acoustic drums join forces with double-tracked guitar, setting the scene for duelling diva vocals. Painting on the canvas of rock music, "Stillness is the Move" drips [...]
