As before , I'm still in the folkfield, due to return Monday. But we're not the type that leave our readers bereft here at Cover Lay Down. Even when we're hanging about stageside in a field somewhere, trying to get our favorite singer-songwriters to cover Freebird . Instead, we asked Sandy, aka Smansmith, the ever-eloquent host of Slowcoustic - "a blog about the unhurried side of Americana/Alt-Country/Folk/Ind ie/Down-Tempo music" which has truly caused me to rethink the very nature of folk music over the last year or so - [...]

Fascinerend. [...]

It must be catch-up Sunday, since I quite by chance chose this album by Blackbird Harmony for a break, after listening to a ton of new stuff. Fitted the bill perfectly, it did; superb, dark, almost sombre country/folk, written by Evan Birdsong, performed by him and Mara Lee Miller ( bosque brown ) on vocals, Danny Crelin-pedal Steel, Matt Hillyer-guitar, Steve Berg -bass (these three are in Eleven Hundred Springs ); with Mark Reznicek on drums (Eleven Hundred Springs and Toadies ). I must have played the album three or four times in a row - it's really [...]

I'm sure almost everyone that reads blogs visits aggregators like the hype machine hoping to see what songs are getting blog love, but I have to say that it's painful to people post the same song over and over again. These days it's anything off the Animal Collective record, but you could really substitute that will any of the hot acts from the last few years (Justice, The National, Kanye and of course any remix of or by these artists). So, in an effort to promote musicians and give away some legal MP3, we are going to mention [...]
Kinda a slow weekend coming up around the D this time around. Maybe everyone's just gearing up for Amateur Night New Year's Eve? Dunno.I do know that we only hipped you to two weekend shows this week ... Continue reading "Good Friday: The Post-Xmas Hangover Edition" >
So you find the Spree a little grating? No worries; there are other holiday show options this weekend that don't involve 22-piece bands or Jews trying to usurp your pagan holiday. Like this one: A Spu... Continue reading "Giveaway: Two Pairs Of Tickets To A Spune Christmas At Hailey's Tomorrow" >
Good news today for Evan Birdsong, the man behind the tangtrastic Blackbird Harmony: Hardwood Exits (which we quite glowingly reviewed back in October) has made the slowcoustic blog's year-end top 25... So, I saw that line in something I read on The Gobbler's Knob the other day and it got me to really thinking about what he meant. Is Country music really the new indie? I mean it really had me wondering what it meant. But, then I realized there's always been indie Country music acts...it's called "Alt-Country." So, that being said lemme hip you to a new (to me) group called Blackbird Harmony . Yep, they are a local band and you may be hearing more about them [...]

This week, we brought you a review of Blackbird Harmony 's second record, Hardwood Exits , a collection of dark country noir from local songwriter Evan Birdsong, recorded by Eleven Hundred Springs ' Steve Berg in Garland. (Before you scoff, just remember: Red Headed Stranger was also recorded in Garland, which bests just about any album ever recorded in Dallas proper, save maybe the works of Robert Johnson.) The record as a whole is a strong one, and the lonely shuffle of "Caution & Dispatch" is [...]

Well this is a bit of a treat this week on Slowcoustic - the interview post! I was lucky enough to get some questions in with John Statz below and now I actually have a follow up to my Blackbird Harmony post (and sister post here ) with, you guessed it - some interview questions! Even Birdsong has been kind enough to offer some insight to my rather quaint questions. Since the post, you might have seen some additional follow up on some of our great blog counterparts [...]

You Should Know If you're like me you've probably asked yourself: What is this shit on CMT they try to pass for country music these days? A songwriting vehicle for Evan Birdsong (if that's his real name, he was born to sing country songs), Blackbird Harmony creates the kind of music I wish popular country was... ok, not really, let's keep the good stuff underground. Described by his label Yer Bird as "American Gothic, Country Folk," Birdsong is backed by Texas country outfit 1100 Springs on his new [...]

So I am going to try and start a new feature here on the ol' website/blog space, and I am thinking of calling it " If you haven't heard ". The title of the weekly installment will be followed by a band or artist name of the featured talent – not unlike the title of this post. I hope you bear with me, as you will most likely already know the selected artists, but humour me as I try bringing it to your attention! First in [...]
I would like to take this opportunity, dear blog reader, to introduce/remind/revisit a bit of Americana called Blackbird Harmony . While some of you may know Mr. Evan Birdsong (pictured above) and his band - you may need a fresh listen. A fresh listen (if it be for the first time, even better) to something you will revisit again and again in the future. While us bloggers like to "promote" or as we call it "listening to us congratulate ourselves on providing great music to the masses", I truly want to promote this one (I have a [...]
