Last year Bjork put out easily her most ambitious project and dynamic to date, with the release of the Biophilia . The album, who's title refers to a love of all living things, is a multimedia project that integrates nature, music, and technology, and offers a companion iPad app, that features "games, music, and editorial content-allowing listeners to explore more deeply the concepts and sounds of each of Biophilia 's 13 songs." After debuting an elaborate stage show for the project in England, Bjork has announced that she will bring it to North America [...]
I am a man of my word. Months ago I promised you, my faithful readers, and the Ripple editors that I would select a random piece of new music and review it regardless of whether I liked it or not. I think I missed a few months but that's life. Anyway, I'm back on track with the latest edition of the grab bag special. I was thinking about what to write up when the new issue of Classic Rock magazine arrived and this CD literally fell into my lap. Saint Jude are a soul/R&B [...]

I didn't have anything exciting and new (other than a lame "Love Boat" reference) to write about today, so instead I'd like to play a little game. It's about as simple as a game can be and you may find yourself playing it at home sometime. Just put your music player on random, listen to 3-5 songs, and explain why they're in your library. I call it Shuffle. The general idea is this: we all have vast, ever growing libraries of media. As much as we'd like to go through and get rid of those albums we'll never [...]

Rich Robinson of Black Crowes fame released his second album, Through A Crooked Sun , last month. Credit Public Radio East's The Sound , a five-hour radio program specializing in Americana, Roots Rock, Folk, and Blues for the exposure to it. Robinson is not a dynamic singer (like brother Chris), but he understands nuance and has good range. He makes the most of what he has. When the track, Lost and Found , opens you're thinking, Crowes lite, but Robinson takes over and lets his vocals define the song as opposed [...]

Who Killed That Bird On Your Windowsill... The Movie is an often hilarious insight into the inner workings of the Black Crowes--one that sees the brothers Robinson doing just about everything you'd expect from them: sneering at everyone, fighting with one another, at odds with radio programmers, but most importantly, creating some of the best American rock music of the early '90s. Glimpses of country-rock and folk appear on Crooks' EP, Lonesome, Rowdy and Restless. On the memorable "Downtown", a series of spaghetti-western horns pave a smooth road for the soaring vocals of Josh Mazour, whose nasally croon is the driving force behind the quartet's infectiously twangy down-south sound. Somewhat surprisingly, the acoustic progressions [...]

It's already been quite the year for the members of Deer Tick , as the band was part of a free-wheeling tour with lead singer John McCauley's side-project Middle Brother . Throw in an acoustic duo tour, a handful of shows as Deervana, as well as a number of festival appearances and headlining gigs, and most bands might consider taking the rest of the year off. Well, that would be most bands, but if you're John McCauley & Co. the remainder of 2011 will keep them just as busy. [...]
Heroin, it's my wife and it's my life - Lou Reed, Heroin Although seldom referenced, the United States seems to have a prevalent drug undercurrent running through its societal veins. Through music, our real, unabridged opinions of drugs are manifested and shine through. Of course there are many different opinions voicing a different stance on just about every stimulant. Through countless hours of recorded music over the past 50 or so years, I am able to infer a couple things: As a society, we LOVE marijuana . Smoke [...]

We keep our eyes peeled for new tour dates announcements each week and compile them on Tuesdays for this handy column… While still remaining active over the last few years, via festival appearances and curated multi-day runs, String Cheese Incident haven't done any sustained touring since announcing a break from the road in 2007. Well, that's all about to change, as the venerable jam act has announced their Roots Run Deep tour , a 10-date East coast run that will kick off on November 25 at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in [...]

Rich Robinson of the Black Crowes is making good use of his main band's extended hiatus by releasing an album and touring behind it. The Rich Robinson Tour will run from October 1 until November 20 and the guitarist will be backed by Steve Molitz of Particle on keys, Joe Magistro on drums and Jack Daley on bass. Details about where the band will play those dates will be announced soon. Molitz and Magistro join Patti Smith, John Medeski, Warren Haynes and Larry Campbell in guesting on Robinson's forthcoming LP, Through A Crooked Sun. [...]
Black Crowes co-founder/guitarist Rich Robinson has announced details of his second solo album. Through a Crooked Sun has been set for an October 11th release. Here's the track list for the record: Gone Away It's Not Easy Lost And Found I Don't Hear the Sound of You Hey Fear All Along the Way Follow You Forever Standing on the Surface of the Sun Bye Bye Baby Falling Again Station Man
The Black Crowes are in the middle of a brief European tour that took them to Shepherd's Bush Empire in London last night, where old friend Jimmy Page joined them for a scorching Shake Your Money Maker encore. Page performed with the band at two pairs of shows in 1999 from which the Live at the Greek release was culled. Black Crowes w/ Jimmy Page - Shake Your Money Maker Next up for the Crowes is a set at the Zwarte Cross Festival in [...]

Easy to see why The Black Crowes and The Black Keys are fans of this Cincinnati-based trio, the Buffalo Killers organic sound has a classic rock feel and there's something particularly Zeppelin-esque about the first track off the band's third album, simply titled 3 . The official release date for 3 is August 2 but the band's got some upcoming tour dates where you might be able to score a copy on CD or colored vinyl. DOWNLOAD: "Circle Day" [...]

The Black Crow is a wonderfully orchestrated piece of art which on the one hand contains charm and atmosphere while on the other hand contains lyrics that portrays loss and escapism. The Black Crow is not an album to immediately lift your mood but if you're 'digging in the pit' this album makes for good company! Stuart Wilde is a Cork based artist who describes his music as 'alternative/blues/folk'. The Black Crow consists of Stuart's deep vocals, guitars, a wooden [...]

It's been quite the struggle to post lately for me. I copied my digital music library from my computer to an external hard drive and the process took nearly a week! My computer is ancient so that might have something to do with it, but suffice to say there was a lot of music tripping through these wires this past week. It's just short of a terabyte now and I'm not really close to having everything from my library digitized. I'm looking forward to having several copies in safe places and buying a new machine that can handle all this [...]
