Thank you to all of the current and past veterans out there today. It's a remarkable sacrifice you've made, and your efforts to protect and support the U.S. are appreciated. Across the world, we celebrate Armistice Day as well. Hopefully, we can move toward a global society that relies on diplomacy and not war to settle its disputes. As today is the eleventh day of the eleventh month in the eleventh year of this new millenium, we're re-posting Blogophilia 11. So, if you havent already, download it and crank it to 11. Look for Friday's Free [...]

WFMU Record Fair Oct 28 - 30 Starting next Friday Octo 28th through Sunday the 30th at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Manhattan (125 W. 18th St) WFMU is hosting their annual Record Fair . It's been an amazing trip to see all sorts of young folks thinking it's cool to own a piece of music and not just digital copy. All weekend they will be spinning 452s and featuring the recent Italian documentary Vinylmania by Director Paolo Campana. I hope to attend on Friday to rummage the crates of records. A [...]

And the parade continues... I forget how much fun I had making these. Blogophilia 11 was released in September 2009. If you've been following along, you should have noticed that I am deep in my "Intro" phase for mixes. I am not sure why I stopped that. Maybe that's something to consider for next mix. The highlights for #11 are All the Kings Men by Wild Beasts and Sleep All Summer by The National and Saint Vincent . I apologize for putting the Pete Yorn tune on [...]

Words by Brendan Sullivan There's a grungy underbelly to the psychedelic pop songs of The Black Hollies , but you'd never really guess it from listening to their pretty and soulful tunes, like "Can't Stop These Tears (From Falling)" or "Patient Sparrow". Those vocals and carefully-picked guitar melodies and washes of organ chords are oh-so-sweet, but they do pack a bigger punch than your standard bubble gum pop revival. Meanwhile, good fucking luck listening to the speedy and noisy garage-rock psychedelia on "Paisley Pattern Ground" and "(Baby) I'm Your Fool" without singing/shouting along [...]

Shows benefitting inarguably just causes ( the oil spill ), but produced by strange partnerships from every philosophical branch known to man and woman ( Aretha Franklin and Condoleezza Rice ?) are expected in the world of concert promotion. Like Pepsi underwriting indie Etsy artist types, it seems Orwellian, hypocritical, cynical, even debased; but yet it's so darn fruitful! But somehow, when the discordant elements come together, sweet, sweet music is born. The latest Mutt n' Jeff partnership isn't evil or aggressively odd (actually, quite the opposite); it's just kind of inspired. [...]
The Vinyl District is delighted to announce that our partnership with Ardent Studios is extending well beyond our Record Store Day Week spotlight with a weekly The Ardent Sessions Presents feature. Each Friday Ardent will be handpicking for TVD a live session from the bands that swing through their studios AND in tandem with the live set, we'll have a giveaway each week, and of course vinyl when possible. Kicking off TVD's very first Ardent Sessions Presents are one of our favorites, New Jersey's [...]

This Saturday night, New York City's Sullivan Hall hosts the tenth annual Freaks Ball, aka Freaks Ball X , featuring longtime Freaks' favorite Scott Metzger with drummer Eric Kalb and bassist Ron Johnson, New Jersey natives The Black Hollies and roots rocker Anders Osborne starting around 9PM. Freaks Ball X celebrates ten years of the influential NYC-Freaks e-mail list which has helped launch the careers of Robert Randolph, The Duo and the American Babies among others in its decade-long existence. We recently spoke with NYC-Freaks list creator - and one of [...]

Whew... almost missed out on the first Friday Mixtape of 2010! See, it's been busy here between the hoidays, and my regular schedule has gone to the dogs whilst I'm on a short vacation with my family. Not to mention that SquirrelFood HQ is getting fresh paint, and so all my technology is unplugged, boxed and hiding beneath a drop cloth in the middle of a room, now colored "Wild Honey". Yep, sounds tasty doesn't it?. Anyway, I managed to dig out the lappy two thousand, and connect to somebody's network to upload this first volume of the year. I [...]

The Black Hollies - Gloomy Monday Morning Some of the darkest clouds I've ever seen have just rolled in, bringing nightfall with them. So it's time for some energetic and infectious neo-garage pop from New Jersey's The Black Hollies. This song, written for a girl that singer Angelo Morey used to watch from afar as she smoked cigarettes at the bus stop beside his workplace, is from the band's third album, Softly Towards The Light , recently released through Ernest Jenning Records. You can download the track for free [...]
The Black Hollies come from the psychedelic state of New Jersey and put chocolate and hot sauce but not crack in their bodies from time to time. They don't exactly sound like the Shades, the Rovin' Flames or the Cavemen but they probably have those 45s. Bassist/singer Justin Morey takes a break from the chocolate factory to talk. This interview by Chris Ziegler.

MP3 : Jay Reatard - It Ain't Gonna Save Me MP3 : The Black Hollies - Gloomy Monday Morning MP3 : Bryan Scary and the ShreddingTears - (It's A) Gambler's Whirl Pels ikke bjørnen før den er skudt. Or, don't skin the bear before it's been shot. That seems to be exactly what Jay Reatard 's old band members tried to do when they walked out on him in October. (But then again, that's punk music, right?) Inconvenient timing (due to them being on [...]
Whether you want to admit it or not New Jersey bands tend to fit a particular sound for the most part, luckily The Black Hollies give the Garden State some diversity when it comes to rock n' roll. The Jersey City quaret have just released their 3rd LP Softly Towards the Light , out on Ernest Jenning Recordings and is already picking up steam. Justin Angelo Morey, singer and bassist of The Black Hollies was nice enough to answer some questions for us regarding their new record, touring and the history of the group. [...]

Most of my mornings lately have involved me getting up at 6.30 for a run before getting organised for work. Yesterday I competed in a 5k run though so I treated myself to a bit of a sleep in this morning. I was quite happy to skip my usual half-dead "come on, you know you'll love it once you hit that footpath" pep talk and roll over for another quick snooze. Definitely a nice way to kick off the week. The Black Hollies know what it's like to dread that Monday morning wake up call [...]

The Black Hollies - Gloomy Monday Morning [...]
[ download ] New Jersey quartet The Black Hollies make the sort of music that wouldn't be out of place on the soundtrack to a Wes Anderson film, somewhere between the sweaty, soulful rave-ups of The Spencer Davis Group and the distinctly British branch of the late 1960s psychedelic-pop tree. On October 6th, the band released their third LP, Softly Towards the Light , on the Ernest Jenning Record Co. and are currently on tour in support of the album. This time around, guitarist Jon Gonnelli put [...]
The Black Hollies, a Jersey City-based quartet, released their third album, Softly Towards The Light (Ernest Jenning), on October 6. They are taking a victory lap with "Gloomy Monday Morning," a shimmering rock track with Brian Jonestown Massacre overtones. They'll be touring all through November, so if you fancy a killer live band that sounds [...]
*UPDATE* The Royal Chains ( Issue # 10 ) - Pop / Rock - New York, USA Featured some months ago in regards to their free album Umbrella , the Royal Chains have a fabulous new single out: "Wolf" . The sound is noticeably cleaner and more focused than that heard on their debut album (though I do love that for it's grittiness too), summery and catchy as ever! --- [...]
