I've always been one for anything in the folk genre, so I was pretty excited when I discovered Blind Pilot would be stopping in Salt Lake City. I know I've said this a few times in the past, but I will continue to say it over and over again. Sometimes the best shows are the ones you go into with little to no expectation. I discovered the band while listening to Fleet Foxes and Dr Dog pandora stations, typically at work. I knew that I really enjoyed the band, but for whatever reason, I had never taken that [...]

2. we are the tide blind pilot expunged records, september 13, 2011 "new york" when bon iver, bon iver was released in june, i remember thinking that i would be very happy if it wasn't my favorite album at the end of the year, because that would mean that some truly great music would have been released during the second [...]
To start off, I have to admit. I have a special place in my heart for anything in the folk genre. Being a huge fan of bands like Fleet Foxes, Blitzen Trapper, Dr. Dog, etc. the list goes on. Anyways, Blind Pilot was one of those bands for me where I would be sitting at my desk working, listening to pandora and suddenly they would come on. This happened too many times until I finally decided to look into who was actually playing these songs that I really really liked. Blind Pilot it was! A duo from Portland, Oregon who [...]

Bind Pilot & The Barr Brothers / Mr. Smalls / 2.10.2012 / Doors 7:00 / $13.50 Words by Jim It's always fun to catch a band around town and see them return a few years later, a few years older, and a few fans stronger. Case in point: Blind Pilot . I caught them back in 2009 when they played with (the seriously awesome) Laura Veirs at Club Cafe. Fast forward three years later, the band has a new album and they're playing at [...]

Great movie, even better scene... if you haven't seen Spinal Tap then put that one at the top of your New Years Resolution's list. But as far as music goes I'd like to take a bit of time and let you guys know exactly what bands I feel "went to eleven" this year. These are [...]

Blind Pilot is a band of well-worn shoes, figuratively and literally. Their songs are the stories of seekers and lovers setting off down long, dirt roads, passing under hanging stars, tramping wooded hills and curling up beside welcome campfires or beneath piled blankets. They are songs with an earned grace and lessons as dear to the heart as capillaries funneling hot blood to the brain and limbs. Most Blind Pilot songs start softly – acoustic picking, Israel Nebeker's easy, endearing vocals, a toe-tapping rhythm – and casually build to a gentle chug, like a dependable [...]

This list is a long time coming and a little later than I would have liked it to be, but I do not take lists lightly so I didn't want to rush it. For me 2011 was a great year in music. I have opened myself up and listened to a lot of stuff that I don't think I would have given a chance a couple of years ago. I also saw a fair amount of shows in 2011. Alexi Murdoch, The Decemberists, The Kills, James Vincent McMorrow and these are all albums I consider to have made up a [...]
