There've been few artists to truly do the R&B genre justice over the past decade, be they man or woman. Sure, we've had a number of great tracks along the way, but that blend of '80s/early-'90s R&B that was both emotional raw, smooth, and fresh seems harder to come by in this modern age. I'm talking about the kind of R&B that's instilled with a funk level of jazz, the kind that's dangerous to put on in the presence of others. Enter Brooklyn's Jose James, an overlooked star of the neo soul, R&B, and jazz worlds. He recently [...]
The Robert Glasper Experiment ’s Black Radio EP, which debuted earlier this year, has been said to be one of his most accessible releases to date but that is not to be taken as a criticism. Glasper, in his own words, is a man of many dimensions and this time around, “I’m just exploring my more hip-hop/soul side, but still jazz-infused ... So really, this is like a good collaboration album of hip-hop, soul, jazz… I think I’m the first one to actually do it right” (via NextBop ). Originally, Glasper called on distinguished guests, [...]

Tom Schnabel Why is it that people born outside the U.S. often have sharper perspectives on American culture, appreciating it more? It was a Frenchman, Alexis de Toqueville, who penned the first great study of America in 1835: the masterpiece was Democracy in America . This reflected French admiration for the founding fathers, who inspired the French Revolution (the French helped [...]

If you've never heard of Marisa Monte , and tell that to a Brazilian, they will look at you as if you said you had never heard of Madonna. Monte has amassed stellar catalog dating back to 1989 and can easily sell out the Beacon in New York, despite not yet being a household US name. Monte has collaborated with the biggest names in Brazilian music, and of course, Brazil's un-offical US ambassador David Byrne. The facts are staggering: "The “Infinito Ao Meu Redor” worldwide tour... hit 140 shows throughout 50 cities in 15 countries across 4 continents. Monte [...]

Joe Lovano and Us Five – Cross Culture (2013)
I expected Joe Lovano, after an association dating back to 1981, to offer tribute to Paul Motian - the legend who died just two months before the saxist began Cross Culture. Instead, Lovano begins with a sun-drenched burst of joy. "Blessings in May" swings with a floorboard-rearranging verve, as Lovano switches from tenor to G-mezzo horns alongside pianist James Weidman, [...]

Blue Note Launches Awesome New App
While we are essentially a hip-hop website, we probably wouldn't be here if it wasn't for jazz music. Thanks to Blue Note Records, which was founded back in 1939, many of jazz's finest moments were captured on record. But with so many different genres and subgenres, it can get a bit tedious trying to piece together history without any guidance. Thanks to OpenEMI and Groovebug, though, Blue Note Records now has a nifty iPad application that makes it so much easier to learn and discover the label's catalog. I provided a screenshot up top, which shows off some [...]

Norah Jones Premieres the Unforgettable "Miriam" Video
This was immediately our favorite track on Norah Jones' gorgeous new Danger Mouse produced album Little Broken Hearts (Out now, Blue Note). "Miriam" is a standout among the many raw breakup songs on the album and may be one of the most salient condemnations of a person via song... ever? Here's the video to match.
Ravi Coltrane – Spirit Fiction (2012)
Spirit Fiction, Ravi Coltrane’s debut album for Blue Note, showcases his elusive yet humble nature on the saxophone - with his freely flowing stream of consciousness leading the way. As the picture on the cover suggests, Ravi’s improvisations throughout the album are like an evasive shadow moving in various directions. We are constantly chasing him - weaving through an unknown [...]
