Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Music , New Releases Pollock Heather Like Madrid and Paris, Toronto is "one of the great cities," according to Blue Rodeo co-frontman Jim Cuddy . Some Canadians don't share his affection for the Big Smoke, though. But until now, the long-established rivalry between Torontonians and the rest of the nation hadn't really bothered Cuddy. "Recently, I've felt sympathy for Toronto," [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , New Music Heather Pollock 'Everyone Watched the Wedding,' the lead-off single from Jim Cuddy 's forthcoming solo release, 'Skyscraper Soul,' is a heartfelt ballad inspired by the recent royal nuptials of Kate Middleton and Prince William. Cuddy, who co-fronts Canadian titans Blue Rodeo , claims he's not usually much of a "royalist" but the song wrote itself. "I was trying to write a rock [...]
It's a surprisingly slow week for live music in our fair city. Don't fret however, there are at least a couple of things worth checking out. Blue Rodeo with Steve Earle, Molson Ampitheatre, Aug 20th The veteran Toronto country band Blue Rodeo are playing their annual outdoor hometown show. This time they've got the troubadour of the downtrodden Steve Earle in tow. It seems like a match made
Filed under: News , Exclusive , Book Club Image From 'Have Not Been the Same' It shouldn't be too hard for any music fan to name groundbreaking and influential Canadian artists: Neil Young , Joni Mitchell , the Band , Leonard Cohen ... and then Arcade Fire , Feist , New Pornographers , Broken Social Scene . But what about the in-between? 'Have Not Been [...]

This always seems to be a hotly contested topic if you are a folk music fan and live in Alberta. Which summer folk festival do I commit to? I have heard arguments for both sides in regards to superior venues, better backdrops and acoustics, etc. When I look at a potential music festival it still comes down to the line-up. The majority of performers have been announced for both of Alberta's bigger folk fests so the final decision will come down to your own personal tastes. I've already made my mind up...but here would be some of my highlights if [...]

For this week's In The Window , I stopped by Around Again in cozy Baldwin Village . The store offers a variety of used vinyl and CD's in a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere. In addition to the variety of musical genres to peruse (including rock, jazz, blues, classical, etc.), you'll also find refurbished turntables and other vintage equipment. New West Blue Rodeo's annual Summer shows at the Molson Amphitheatre are pretty much a Toronto tradition and they never have a problem getting people to come down to the lake's edge and lounge about listening to old favourites, whether there's a new record to support or not (their last release was 20092s The Things We Left Behind ). But this year's edition is notable for offering the extra incentive of having Steve Earle & The Dukes and Duchesses on board as support. [...]

Quick...immediate names that spring to mind when the mention of Canadian musical acts come up in conversation? If you are imagining Celine Dion, Nickelback, Bryan Adams, KD Lang, Barenaked Ladies, Hedley, Wide Mouth Mason, Three Days Grace, Theory of a Deadman, Swollen Members, Sum 41, Simple Plan, Avril Lavigne or Alanis Morissette...shame on you. Although these bands and (questionable) musicians helped to shape the landscape of the Canadian Music Scene, they do little convey how talented our country truly is. I meant to put this post together after Arcade Fire pulled off their Grammy victory for [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , Awards , Junos Chris Young, CP There was plenty of gear at Toronto's Ricoh Coliseum, just not the type usually affiliated with Canadian musicians. The Juno Cup, an annual celebrity hockey game pitting former National Hockey League players (NHL Greats) against a team of Canadian artists (The Rockers), held its practice Thursday afternoon to prepare for the big game tonight. And for Billy Talent [...]

Toronto - The Swallows is the brainchild of Glenn Milchem, drummer for Blue Rodeo who has also played with Holy Fuck and Change of Heart. Despite the fact that he band's been going since 1999, I had never really given them much of a listen, but I recall hearing some Swallows stuff awhile back. When they launched into their first song of the night, "Shoot Out Sparks", I though to myself, "This is not quite what I recall them sounding like." It was a good track though, a nice uptempo rocker that set the tone for the night. Milchem also uses [...]

Though there seems to be a plethora of bands coming out of Quebec, most of them derive from the cultural hub of Montreal. But the overlooked town of Sherbrooke has a pretty, little secret with a strange little name: Jake and the Leprechauns . This six-piece indie folk band (with a name stemming from an inside joke) has been playing the Canadian music scene for the last few years now and is getting some due respect for their most recent studio album, At Midnight, The Birdsong . Singer (and jack of all trades) C-Antoine Gosselin and [...]

Of late, Canada has had an increased presence in my life. (not that there's anything wrong with that) There's long been music from north of the border in my world and some fantastic stuff at that. And, a month or so ago, I happened across a groovy website for the brilliant Canadian sketch comedy troupe The Kids In The Hall. (I keep the page open at work and - to balance out the moments when I want to set fires - I often will read a transcript of a [...]

Toronto - Oh Canada how I love thee. I also love free concerts and world cuisine. The Harbourfront Centre combined music, food, tall ships and Canada day into one fun-filled day. What more could one ask for? Well, fireworks for one, but I digress. The Sadies are a mainstay on the Toronto music scene, they have been around for over 10 years now and have collaborated with fellow Canucks such as Tragically Hip , Blue Rodeo , Neko Case and the list goes on. [...]
A lot of jokes involve Canada (and we've perpetuated a lot of those stereotypes here at CoS). But if there's one thing our neighbors to the north do well, it's honor their best and brightest musicians with the Polaris Prize . And that they'll do come September 20th in Toronto. As of now, however, 40 acts and their must-hear albums have been announced, but that list will get leaner by next month. According to the Montreal Gazette , the 2010 award honors albums released from June 1st, 2009 to May [...]

Except for a few big releases from Nelson Demille, Bret Easton Ellis and (to a lesser extent) Anthony Bourdain , June is a pretty slow month for blockbuster book tours. A couple of the more interesting "sleeper" events include tonight's ( June 3 ) performance and signing from Blue Rodeo at Lincoln Triangle, the Upstairs at The Square event with The Growlers and Gavin McInnes on June 10 and Lewis Black 's DVD signing on June 17 . Here are a couple more June 2010 [...]

Filed under: Exclusive , Canada Hailing from Oshawa, Ontario, a city better known for producing hockey players and frustrated auto workers than successful recording artists, Cuff the Duke is nominated for a Juno award for Adult Alternative Album of the Year. Lead singer, Wayne Petti, tells Spinner his band didn't expect the nomination. "We operate on the periphery of popular music, and we don't make records to be nominated for things. It's such a cliché thing to say, but being recognized is such an [...]

Filed under: News , Canada Juno Cup, the highly anticipated hammy hockey game pitting ex-NHLers against musicians, all in the name of charity, good fun and ice-bound Canadian competitiveness, took place Friday evening at Jack Byrne Arena in Torbay, Newfoundland, as part of the week-long Juno Awards festivities. Perhaps not surprisingly, the musicians lost, 9 to 8. The annual game -- now in its seventh year -- is the highlight event leading up to the Juno Awards presentations (Canada's Grammy equivalent) Saturday and Sunday nights in celebration [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive , Canada Billy Talent frontman Ben Kowalewicz swears he didn't expect to get nominated at this year's Juno Awards , even if his band consistently sells out arenas in Canada and has sold 800,000 albums domestically -- including 140,000 copies of their latest, 'Billy Talent III.' The Toronto-based band is up for Rock Album of the Year, Album of the Year, Single of the Year for 'Rusted From the Rain,' and Group of the Year -- not to mention [...]
