From its band name –- which sounds like a something off the front porch of a shotgun shack - to its muscular, harp-driven opening track, you’d be forgiven for assuming Gator and Mudcat’s Back in the Game was just another blues-rocking project. After all, Michael “Mudcat” Reames and Wayne “Gator” Folse open this thing with a squalling menace on “Song [...]

Some magic was bound to surround this, as Jimmy Vivino reunited with long-time former collaborators for the first time in years. But doing so in Levon Helm's old-barn studio, where Vivino had made so many memories, only heightened the date's sense of emotional reminiscence. The results on 13 Live, due May 7, 2013 from Blind Pig, play out like the [...]

It must be a hard life being the daughter of two of the most powerful stars in the world. Flying into Paris to support Beyonce, Blue Ivy Carter and Jay-Z were spotted with the star lunching in the French capital, the night after performing to a sold out Paris crowd and having unveiled the advert for H&M's latest ad campaign "Mrs. Carter at H&M" We have to say, since making her debut on Beyonce's documentary "Life [...]
Kitsuné loves as the day as the night, the day to wear fancy outfits and the night to party infinitely. But the best is that whenever it's the day or the night, you can wear this adorable sweater made by Kitsuné for the first year anniversary of the DAYNIGHT St Petersburg concept store, available from now! A fiery aggression surrounds Universal Breakdown Blues, as Popa Chubby doesn't lament the dangerous and uncertain era in which we live so much as rail against it with all of his might. Populated with grippingly personal tales, and some of his most bold and dexterous guitar playing to date, this album is one part emotional release, one part confrontational triumph [...]

It got to the point recently, because I’d acquired so many killer new 45s, that I realised the drip, drip method of sharing them as single file vinyl rips through this blog wasn’t going to be enough. There was a backlog developing and it dawned on me that even though it had only been two months since the last one , it was time to embark on another mix making project. The result of that endeavour is Blop-Up, 50 minutes of rockin’ blues bliss. Several of these records took some chasing to find, others found me. Almost all have [...]

The seriously talented Australian blues lady Mia Dyson makes her way across the Pacific with an exciting new release. Co-Op Music, 2013 6.6 / 10.0 The Australian music scene has always been a...
Beth Hart, a raw and dynamic singer, has joined forces once again with guitarist Joe Bonamassa - and, as with 20112s Don't Explain, this collaboration brings out the best in both. Hart's quivering growl, and her dangerously sexual purr, have rarely been put to better use than on the title track from their forthcoming Provogue Records release - this simmering [...]

A never seen glimmering material came to light on two raffined pieces of the Maison Kitsuné Spring-Summer 2013 collection for women. This rope style fabric is a braided mix of cotton, in a beaming midnight blue, that magnifies the garments to which it belongs. A one-off creation, proper to Maison Kitsuné house, that anchors in its [...]

You happen upon an enigmatic London producer with a penchant for monochromic, silently woebegone imagery who just so happens to operate under the guise of Triste . That's the Spanish term for sad , and then you bash play on his latest endeavour which is one entitled Blue. By now, you'd immediately be forgiven for thinking you were about to embark upon a voyage of dejected discovery about the inner emotional workings of some perennial miserablist, though that's absolutely not the case with this one as Blue gradually blooms into a subtle work of tweaked, toned down and pared back [...]
Francis Hillman "Scrapper" Blackwell was an exceptional guitar player who's single-note picking style anticipated the electric blues of the '40s and '50s. He was a self-taught guitarist, building his first guitar out of cigar boxes , wood and wire. Known for being withdrawn and hard to work with, Blackwell established a rapport with pianist Leroy Carr , whom he met in Indianapolis in the mid-1920s, creating a productive working relationship. Carr convinced Blackwell to record with him for the Vocalion label in 1928; the result was " How Long, How Long Blues ", the biggest blues [...]

Here is a third track from The Mohawk Lodge's forthcoming album Damaged Goods . In contrast to the other two we've already posted , 1000 Violins is a more reflective ruminative song with dark themes at its heart - it is a cathartic coming to terms with longing, pain and desperation, haunting, affecting and ultimately rather beautiful. Have a listen. . Follow @madmackerel

Humble. Exuberant. Virtuoso. Eclectic. Gary Clark Jr. is real southern blues and rock legend in the making. For the second time in just over two months, Jr. has sold out the legendary Roxy Theatre on Sunset Strip in Hollywood. His performance on Tuesday night, April 16th was of the most pure. GCJ kicked the night off with “When My Train Rolls In” from his most recent album, Blak and Blu . This set the tone for what would come to be a very gratifying musical evening. Nearly two hours deep, Clark [...]

SuperCaine is basically just 4 musicians fed up with the vast majority of modern music that is commercially available. We are striving to bring our own brand of independently produced country & blues influenced indie to the masses, where the sole focus is about the sort of songwriting and quality performance that is reminiscent of the late 602s & early 702s. The band consists of Alex Upton on drums, Anthony Costanzo on bass, Jack Cunningham on lead guitar & keys and Jasper Morris on lead vocals & guitar. The four of us have played together in different forms and [...]
