"Blue State", the Downer Party's second release this year and first 73, is the perfect follow-up to their spring EP "Cities". As an ongoing theme, much of the groups lyrics and songwriting describes places and locations (more so than people or things). Carrying this torch forward, "Blue State" focuses on the group's home - the San Francisco Bay Area. Download "Blue State" Free Music, Every Day. Subscribe to [...]

Mescalito made post-rock leftfield dance, heavily influenced by trip hop but without an overwhelming sense of coffee-table niceness. Their work is more gentle psychadelic. Luke Shepherd and Derek O'Sullivan formed the gentle nu-jazz trip-hop outfit Mescalito in the early '90s and aligned themselves with a conflict of styles well known from the increasingly eclectic wave of second-generation chill-out. After a chance encounter at the Henley Regatta and an almost annual series of personal relocations which took the band from Bournemouth to London and finally to Shoreditch, Mescalito secured a deal with Tummy Touch Records (Tim "Love" [...]

From Nate Silver : That's right: just five states, collectively containing about 2 percent of the American population, have statistically significant pluralities of adults identifying themselves as Republicans. These are the "Mormon Belt" states of Utah, Idaho and Wyoming, plus Nebraska, plus Alaska. By contrast, 35 states are plurality Democratic, and 10 states are too close to call. There are a few caveats with this Gallup poll, the first being that it polled only adults and not registered voters or likely voters. But the striking things about this is that many people consider themselves [...]
I have always been obsessed with the Child Chorus. It is a sacred art. In particular, I am enamored with its connection to post-apocalyptic cinema. There is nothing more perfectly complementary to the threat of certain death for the human race than an eerie, emotionless sea of juvenile moaning. Take a look... by lora kolodny You may have heard of new media artist, sculptor, printmaker, photographer, painter (etc.) Jonathan Horowitz , perhaps been lucky enough to see his work in the MoMA collection , the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, or Migros museum in Zurich. ACROSS THE WIRE BY BLUE STATES: This season, Horowitz has had a lot to say about voting, politics and media in the United States. Mostly, he's said [...]
Part Of The Ground Game Read about Volunteerism, heading back to the hometown to help get out the vote. A quick trip that lasted just over 24 hours. Got to show off some of Maple County, grab a great pizza...

Over the past few years, this mix would always coincide with the very first day of Autumn. Obviously, I missed this one by a few weeks, but I wasn't planning putting one together this year. I'm not sure why, but the season transition just hadn't clicked with me at all, even though I had been anxiously awaiting this for months. That faint touch of cold weather, I dunno, it just brings me happiness like no other. It wasn't until early last night after walking around town, while listening to a few random songs, that I felt this sudden [...]

Some more quality downtempo music from Blue States. Blue States is Andy Dragazis. In 2002 the second album "Man Mountain" was released on XL Recordings, which saw a change from the first album through the addition of vocalist Ty Bulmer. Including a string quartet, horn section and a kids choir "Man Mountain" was an all together grander sounding affair than the homely "Nothing Changes...", the standout track being 'Season Song' which ended up on the 28 Days Later soundtrack. And yet, in [...]

At a time when chill out music was becoming muzak, Blue States came along with an unpretentious downtempo beauty of an album. Blue States is Andy Dragazis. Blue States established themselves at the forefront of the burgeoning wave of downtempo acts way back in 1998. Andy Dragazis blended Guitars, Bass, Drums, Fender Rhodes, Bouzuki and the Hammond Organ. Blue States debut release the imaginatively titled 'Blue States Forever EP' was released in 1998. In the next two years there were a further four EP's released, including 'Your Girl', and 'Walkabout'. The [...]
The new Blue States record, entitled First Steps Into..., provides a welcome dose of the group's (well, at this point, it's just the one guy) delectable brand of sweeping, orchestral techno. The tunes are theatrical without being bombastic, delicious and...

This is such the perfect song for this time of night! (don't let the time stamp fool you, it is really late). It is a electro indie ballad/instrumental. It is really jamming. It has some really weird synth instruments that I can't really describe, but it gives the song an almost Indian sound. I can totally see this song being played in the lobby of a yoga center! Wait, I think I just had an enlightenment. No wait, I just fell asleep for a second! This song is really great. You should download said song. [...]

After one of the largest album release weeks of the year, I was kind of hoping to not have the same thing happen for the second consecutive week in a row. As you can see though, we were not let off the hook with this week's releases either. Not as many high-profile albums with this bunch, but still more than enough goodies to wet your appetite for something new. If there's one album this week that I can highly recommend, it would certainly be the US release of New Young Pony Club's Fantastic [...]

MP3: Blue States - The Electric Complement This sounds pretty grand to me. Blue States, the longest serving Memphis Industries representatives might as well have thrown their keyboards, devices and extension cords out of the window because he has created something that sounds magical, crafted and stitched together by hand, something out of this world in the "Huh..." rather than the "wow." sort of sense. A brief moment of grand progressive instrumental electronica. It sounds momental, lost, and creative. Like a fleeting story of disrupted equilibrium, eventual [...]

Blue States: First Steps Into... We love this group, and there new one successfully blends the styles of Nothing Changes Under the Sun , and The Soundings and comes out sounding a little like an Air record. This is ready and waiting to be downloaded on Itunes . Perfect soundtrack for artists, lovers, and dreamers (like us). [...]

From time to time, I get so bogged down with links to mp3s that I just need to throw a whole bunch at you in one swoop. And so, here's a healthy handful of songs I can give thumbs up to that hopefully you'll enjoy too. Not really a huge Devendra Banhart fan. The guy scares me a little bit, and his music can be a little too "out there" for me at times. "Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon" is the name of the new album coming out September 25th. This song, "Seahorse" is the best Devendra Banhart [...]
Blue States - What Can be Done to Right a Wrong For those of you who follow the goings on here at Music For Robots, you'll recognize the band Blue States, as they're a mainstay of the UK-based Memphis Industries label (also the UK home of the Go! Team, the Pipettes, Dungen, El Perro Del Mar, Absentee, Field Music, etc.), and because I've posted about them in the past. Plus, Blue States, originally the solo-work of Andy Dragazis, was actually the first band Memphis signed, back in the late 90s. Well, now, four albums into it, Blue States comes...
Blue States, Memphis Industries' first signing and mainstays of the label, return with their fourth album First Steps Into... With First Steps Into… Blue States return from whence they came - to being, to all intents and purposes, a one man band as they were on first album Nothing Changes Under the Sun. Having previously worked with vocalist Tahita on the sophomore album Man Mountain and turned into a full-fledged 3 piece on the third, The Soundings, Blue States is once again the sole work of Andy Dragazis, save for the able assistance of Sam Walker on drums [...]
