I am a huge Blur fan. Major. They are my favorite band. They are my favorite Britpop band. And Damon Albarn is my all time celebrity crush. Not only was their first public appearance as a band on my 30th birthday of all days but then someone had to go and post THIS gem on YouTube. They only made their live return last night (a hometown gig at the East Anglian Railway Museum near Colchester, the scene of their first ever show) but already some excellent live footage of the reformed Blur has emerged. I wasn't too broken up about New Order's acrimonious demise in 2007, since the last few records weren't exactly up to par, but the split seems to be permanent this time. In fact, Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris have started a new band with touring New Order guitarist Phil Cunningham (who replaced Morris' wife Gillian Gilbert). A smattering of clips have surfaced showing Blur rehearsing for its comeback concert at Hyde Park (and the smaller warm up club gigs, of course). Things are sounding awfully good, even in this rough footage leaked to build excitement around the band's obligatory compilation, Midlife: A Beginners Guide To Blur . Here's to hoping those rumored US dates pan out. After over two years of rumors, filming, and set-backs, the documentary about Pop sensation and musically transcending Gorillaz is about to be released. Entitled Bananaz , the film is live action as opposed to the cartoon rendered imaginary band members that have dominated the band to this point. Graham Coxon performs the first single off his forthcoming LP, The Spinning Top , from the rooftop of the Marriott at SXSW. I have long been a fan of Mr. Coxon's guitar prowess both in Blur and as a solo artist. For those unfamiliar with the man's talent with a six string, do watch this video. He's a picking machine. And singing on top of it. Completely bad ass.
