It’s not one minute into London trio Daughter ’s debut album that the poignant depiction of “frozen hearts growing colder with time” is laid down and the mood set for the next 45 minutes: complete and utter sadness of the highest order. If You Leave is out on 4AD , the home of fellow savants of sorrow The National and Bon Iver , so it’s not surprising that Daughter join the likes of the aforementioned. The very [...]

Not much is left to say about Colin Stetson , but if you haven't gotten caught up yet, here's a brief rundown: Colin Stetson is a musician on a whole new level for musicians. He plays saxophone (and pretty much everything else with a reed) like a professional athlete, wrestling, pushing, and generally torturing his instrument, utilizing a technique called circular breathing to play for, sometimes, 15 goddamn minutes straight! Wikipedia has generously compiled a list of artists he's recorded and performed with, and it's even larger than I recalled: [...]

The Shouting Matches' debut album, Grownass Man , is a throwback to an era when friends would get together just to play music. They weren't playing to make money or have a career, but to just jam together for the fun of it. Occasionally, they'd play in front of their other friends or at parties. Other times they'd have hootenannies in a barn, filled with dancing, barbecue, beers, and good times, playing until the sun came up or the cops came by. Grownass Man is just [...]

Having aired the track at their recent Coachella performance Poliça have today unveiled the studio version of their new single, 'Tiff', featuring none other than Justin Vernon of Bon Iver. Poliça's debut album, last year's 'Give You The Ghost', was a triumph, with Vernon himself calling the Minneapolis five-piece "the best band I've ever heard" . You could say the colloboration was innevitable. 'Tiff' is a dark, dubby beast that has Channy Leaneagh and Vernon's vocals intertwining to claustaphobic effect. It's devestating.

After last year's very excellent Give You the Ghost , one of our favorite albums of last year, we weren't really expecting to get any new music from POLIÇA any time soon. So when the Minnesota-based band announced a new single, "Tiff," we got a little excited. And when we found out that it featured none other than Bon Iver 's (among other projects) Justin Vernon , we got even more excited. [...]

If you asked anyone two weeks ago who Vance Joy was, no one would have a clue. However last week saw the release of his debt EP, God Loves You When You're Dancing and he has since generated a huge ... Continue reading

This week, London three-piece Daughter released their mesmeric debut album, If You Leave . To celebrate, the trio popped in to BBC Radio 1 on Wednesday night to perform a jaw-dropping session excusively for Zane Lowe. It included this: a gorgeous, slow-burning mix up of Bon Iver's 'Perth' and Hot Chip's 'Ready For The Floor'. Although completely contrasting in their original formats, the group transform them into one continous torch song. Utterly, utterly beautiful. Listen and download below. Download: Daughter - Perth vs. Ready For The Floor (Live Lounge)

Some things you just wouldn't expect... like when Daughter recently visited BBC Radio One and stunned everyone with a mash-up of Bon Iver 's "Perth" and Hot Chip 's "Ready for the Floor . " I know, enough said... you can pick your jaw up off the floor now. Have a listen below and leave comments. I'd like to know what you think! This week also saw the release of Daughter 's debut album, If You Leave [...]

Deptford Goth 's debut album Life After Defo mixes youthful heartbreak with expert production to create one of the most fascinating records of the young year. The brainchild of Daniel Woolhouse, Deptford Goth mines R&B while taking equally from the singer-songwriter era to create a quiet album that's heavy on atmosphere, emotion, and intriguing production choices. Like all great albums, Life After Defo takes a while to truly grab hold of you. But, when it does open up, it's a revealing album that brings the [...]

There's something about covers that just makes my guts twist. Except for an handful of remarkable cases - "If You Leave" by Nada Surf , "A Case of You" by James Blake and Joseph Gordon-Levitt drunk-singing "Here Comes Your Man" in 500 Days of Summer among them - I simply cannot stand them. Now I can add Bon Iver 's "Perth" masterly covered by Avec Sans to [...]

Unsigned songwriter and producer K H U S H I has recently started gaining significant attention on the blogosphere, and it's totally well-deserved: his simple yet catchy melodies bring together the best of K H U S H I 's favourite artists - Bon Iver , The National and Alt-J - shaping some passionate ballads. K H U S H I 's project was officially born in September 2012 in East London (in Hackney to be [...]

Delicate, light and glacial, the music of Søren Løkke Juul , who goes by the name Indians , evokes a wintry isolation that brings together the intimacy of Bon Iver and the smoothness of Sigur Ros on his debut album, Somewhere Else . A fine testament would be the folk imbued “ I Am Haunted ” with Justin Vernon ’s woodsy twang on accompanied [...]

In a period where some artists are looking for the new, the cool and the hype, some others go back to the classics. Matthew E. White has come out of the blue with Big Inner , a psychedelic New Weird America album, that rediscovers the roots of American music. The spiritual and southern vibes of Big Inner can be easily traced back: White was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, the son of Christian missionaries. The album, recorded in the [...]

Nowadays, in the space of just one year, a musician’s career can have a complete twist; going from recording some demos in the bedroom to doing an extensive tour in Europe or the U.S. can fit in a bustling 365 days period. And that’s what happened to Søren Løkke Juul under his moniker Indians ; he initially started making music in his hometown Copenhagen and played his first concert in February of this year. Not even a year after, he has already toured Europe and the U.S. extensively in support of other bands, such as [...]

Photography by Geoff Duncan Well, Bon Iver are just making their rounds recently. If you didn't see the iconic band on their live-streamed concert via YouTube from Radio City Music Hall, then you can catch their set with Austin City Limits below. After more than a year of touring Justin seems to be ready to settle down, and rightfully so. He made a comment at their last night at Radio City that it was their last show for they weren't sure how long. Don't panic, die hard J.Vern fans, a [...]

The people in Talvik's songs are weary, but they've also, miraculously, retained the stars in their eyes, those blazing gleams that they'll be damned if they ever let get rattled or ripped from them. Sofia Talvik on Daytrotter My Daytrotter session is released today, and for all of you who asked about which album the Wichita Lineman cover is on, and I've said none - here it is! For all of you who [...]

We knew it was coming, but now it's really really coming, and almost almost here (kinda). Unknown Mortal Orchestra 's second album is due out in early 2013 on their new label Jagjaguwar (home of Bon Iver ) but today they've given us the first taste of what it might sound like, and if you were a fan of their stunning debut album , you'll flip your fucking shit for this new track. Much like the warm and fuzzy naval-dwelling retro-pop on their debut, [...]

Astronauts, etc. aka Anthony Farrar, has just released a video for his latest single “You Can Yell.” The 21-year-old Berkeley student blew up the blogosphere earlier this month with the release of “Mystery Colors,” a hauntingly electronic tune with similarities to artists like Bon Iver , Beach House and Grizzly Bear . His soft vocals and wistful melodies relax your brain and melt away your tensions like a good illegal drug. The kind that should be legal. “You [...]
