Om het nieuws van een nieuw Bon Iver album (ergens in juni, als je je dat soms afvroeg..) te vieren even wat aandacht voor S. Carey. "They weren’t just good songs, they were great, interesting, unique; it’s a beautiful album. So I spent two weeks holed up in my bedroom with laptop, headphones and notebook, and I wrote down all the drum parts and learned all the lyrics, melodies and harmonies. When the band I was in opened for Justin at his first local show as Bon Iver, I told him I knew all [...]
I just wrote an entire blog about the Yann Tiersen/S. Carey show and heavily referenced a previous blog I did on S. Carey's album "All We Grow". But when I went in search for the post to link to it I realized that apparently no such post exists. After berating myself for keeping this musical [...]

Click image to download full album Sounds like: Bob Dylan, Bon Iver, Fleet Foxes "The Tallest Man on Earth - Little River" What's so good? If you’re like me, you haven’t heard much exciting folk music in the last few years. Despite the recent emergence of songwriters like Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) and Robin Pecknold (Fleet Foxes), it often seems like a mere handful of contemporary artists truly display the same amount of earthiness and [...]

I like Joanna Newsom . Really; I do. As a classically trained oboist I appreciate her musicality and the way she turns her songs into movements, and her albums into symphonies with layers of emotion, harmony, and Hans Christian Anderson charm. But sometimes she can lace all her good musicianship with so much bullshit. We get it; you're obscure. Have a gluten-free vegan cookie. Enter Brooklyn singer/songwriter Lia Ices . Ices is hot off her most recent release Grown Unknown . My favorite track from the album, by the same title, is [...]

A few days ago we received an email from Jagjaguwar Records with a link to the new video for S. Carey’s song “In the Dirt.” The email said, “With no signs of winter coming to an end, we often forget the simple joy that snow once brought us as children. The S. Carey team received a video from two brothers who made a video for “In the Dirt,” recruiting their own children on a journey lasting until sunrise in Malmo, Sweden.” The “In the Dirt” video premiered on Spin.com,, and Sean Carey told [...]
I was introduced to this song by the fabulous Winter (Or What We Mistake for December) mix that Cheryse posted last Friday. It turns out that the creator of the enchanting tune, S. Care y, is a singer and multi-instrumentalist in Bon Iver who released his solo debut last fall. The stunning track is matched with a video that's just as lovely. The clip matches the wintry feel of the song depicting a young boy and girl bonding amidst a snowy Swedish backdrop, so basically Let The Right One In without [...]

S. Carey, "In The Dirt" From Carey’s debut solo release in 2010, the former Bon Iver drummer and vocalist brings to light a fan made video he has adopted as his official video for the single, In The Dirt". Check it out above. You can grab a copy of his album, over at Jagjaguwar S. Carey - In The Dirt ( via )

Photo by Cameron Witting As one of the backing musicians in Justin Vernon's critically lauded indie-folk band Bon Iver, multi-instrumentalist Sean Carey provides drums, piano, and vocals during Vernon's live performances. He brings the same three things to the table with his own solo project, S. Carey , as well—but often with surprisingly different results. Sure, there are plenty of moments in S. Carey's debut album, All We Grow (released in August by Jagjaguwar ), that would fit comfortably in a Bon Iver song; for the most part, however, you could easily [...]

my soul, my soul cries for them in the morning, cause i'm guilty just the same ♫ S. Carey - Mothers For those of you who prefer a calmer transition into your workweek I can recommend S Carey's debut LP All We Grow . You should all have been getting misty eyed to the Bon Iver drummer's "In The Dirt" for a while and now I can definitely endorse the rest of this delicately tense piano fueled collection. Nothing is as immediately gripping as "In The Dirt" but [...]

On two different occasions last month I found myself on solo travels to meet friends in Chicago. Once by car and once by train. I'm not complaining, these trips afford uninterrupted listens to albums I've been neglecting or simply haven't gotten around to. Insert S. Carey's All We Grow . Released earlier this year, this is a record that I would describe as an invested listen. By this I mean it didn't blow me away on initial listen, but subsequently revealed its beauty on follow up plays. [...]
Song: In the Stream Artist: S. Carey I'm continuing with this fall theme. S. Carey from Bon Iver has released an interesting and fragile record recently that's just brimming with fallen leaves and brisk breezes (and some serious For Emma, Forever Ago inspiration, but it's still good). "In the Stream" sums it all up, folks. Plaintive piano and Carey's gold tinged vocals sing " I was covered in ferns " and later " I was wind in the pines ". Reminds me of those [...]

Justin Vernon’s Bon Iver backup and cronie S. Carey [first name Sean] has released his own solo record on Jagjaguwar. Were it not for The Violent Femmes, and far less notably The Gufs, the musical progeny of Wisconsin would be next to nil. In truth, Wisconsin is more regrettably known for killing musicians than cultivating them. Otis Redding's Beechcraft plunged into the ice water of Lake Monona in Madison, and Stevie Ray Vaughan's helicopter crashed into what passes for a ski hill at Alpine Valley, outside of East Troy. But thanks to a small folk collective from Eau Claire who embrace the true and abstract nature of Wisconsin, the state is fast becoming a geographical niche for folk music. Part [...]
Sorry about the lack of posting over the weekend. I was away visiting my friend Keane in Dundee. I hadn't seen him for what felt like months (in reality it was just over a month) so we spent the whole weekend catching up and going on a massive pub crawl of Dundee. When i arrived on the Friday i was greeted by Keane and his girlfriend at the bus station and then swiftly moved on to the pub then back to Keanes flat where we enjoyed the relaxation of some very smooth joints, a nearby 24 our bakery and some [...]
Apparently the hottest ticket in town belonged to The Tallest Man on Earth , which is both surprising and deserved. Of course the quiet atmosphere was surely ruined by the constant chatter that is ever present at Antones, but it didn't stop the beautiful music offered from TME and the opening band S. Carey. While a lot of attention has been given to Sean Carey for his participation in Bon Iver , his set at Antones with his bandmates indicated that he is quietly coming into his own, ready to [...]

S. Carey, one-fourth of Bon Iver, has released his hauntingly beautiful debut record "All We Grow." Let the Bon Iver comparisons begin. More like it: Album Review: "Outside Love" Pink Mountaintops Album Review: "Hospice" The Antlers ALBUM REVIEW: "Bromst" Dan Deacon
