ALBUM REVIEW: Little did these two bands know that their last performance would leave behind rubble and a set of burnt out souls. I'm of course talking about the fire that destroyed the Sound Station in Westfield where above video was shot a week before that tragic Sunday on Jan 22nd, 2012. This was not their intent only metaphorically of course. Bob Larsen the owner loves to celebrate all sorts of music and these guys were part of that musical entertainment. So, if your a fan of noise, as he is, and copious guitar notes then [...]
The highly talented and creative Japanese born vocalist/(Dada) visual artist, Yamatsuka Eye , is down for the Sugar Mountain Festival in Melbourne and also for this years Sydney Festival . He is most known for founding the experimental rock band Boredoms in early 1986, a progression from noise band Hanatarash created by Eye, Zeni Geva and Mitsuru Tabata in 1984. Apart from Boredoms and Hanatarash, Eye has many alias and has used numerous other pseudonyms. Eye is a member of UFO or Die, Puzzle Punks, Noise Ramones and Destroy 2. Eye has also made [...]
As previously reported, ATP UK curated by Jeff Mangum has been postponed from December 2011 to March 9-11th, 2012. As a result, there are a few changes to the previously announced lineup, which the festival revealed today. To start, Panda Bear, Tinariwen, Superchunk, Group Inerane, The Mountain Goats, and Colin Stetson are all unable to play the new date and have been removed from the bill. What's more, the festival is still speaking to Fleet Foxes, Sun Ra Arkestra and Micachu And The Shapes and hopes to confirm their participation soon. As [...]

Following in step with now legendary 77 Boadrum, The Boredoms are returning with the 111 Boadrum set to take place on, you guessed it, Nov. 11 2011.
Like they did on 7/7/07 with 77 Boadrum , 8/8/08 with 88 Boadrum , '09 with Boadrum 9 , and last year with, you got it, Boadrum 10, the numerological experimentalist heroes of Boredums will assemble another world-class drum circle this year, on the corresponding date, with an appropriate number of percussionists. This site has details (via P4K ) These things are an incredible amount of fun - I caught the original in 2007 and saw it again two years later at ATP (where we had most of them recreate [...]

[photos by acidjack] Shinji Masuko is a revered cult figure among aficionados of latter day Japanese experimental rock. Perhaps best known for his work in DMBQ , and more recently as a guitarist for Boredoms , Masuko is a renaissance man of the scene, also making a huge contribution in music journalism. He was also instrumental in raising money for Japanese musicians who were victims of the tsunami, an effort in which Oneida and NYCTaper participated . It was a rare treat for us stateside to get to see Masuko in a "solo" (with [...]
The day is still, one of those damp days which seems to smother movement. It's warm, not even a sweatshirt day. I heard the rain earlier this morning, but I just nestled and went back to sleep. I swear it got light for a bit, but I think the sun felt overwhelmed by all the clouds and went back inside to mull over its future. You know I love the rain, but a succession of rainy days tends to get dreary, to make me a bit lethargic. Yesterday we did errands, including Gracie's favorite spot, the dump, but [...]
This morning it was coffee and papers on the deck. The morning was warm and sunny. Gracie found a cool spot and fell asleep, sort of keeping me company. The birds were plentiful as I had filled the feeders yesterday. The deck, however, brought me a bit of sadness. Some of the flowers are dead as are a few of the herbs. The sun feels different and its shine is muted. When I had finished the papers, I decided to go into the backyard and collect the branches which had fallen during the summer and the hurricane. After [...]
Today is perfectly beautiful. The sun is warm without being hot, the sky is blue and there is a slight breeze. All week the temperature will be in the low 702s. I doubt it gets much better than this. My right arm is peeling, a souvenir from my Ghanaian journey. On the way up-country to Tamale, I got quite the sunburn. I told Thomas, my driver, I had to sit backwards all the way to Accra. He told me I would be uncomfortable. Every now and then I run into a day when I have absolutely [...]

Japan is a nation with many important accomplishments in the field of noise music (to the point that a sub-genre called Japanoise is pretty widely recognized). Whether it's the crushing brutality of the likes of Merzbow, the almost proggy insanity of Ruins, or the left field noise pop of Melt-Banana, for whatever reason, Japanese artists have had amazing success fusing the primal intensity of noise to whatever other genres they focus on. Standing at the forefront of that movement are the intensely iconoclastic Boredoms and their psychedelic, almost ritualistic noise rock. While their prolific output dates back all the way [...]
[[[[VVRRSSNN]]] - "Comeouttoshowdem" MP3] The drive up US-101—the Pacific Coast Highway—was the most surreal drive yet. It took a while for the visuals to kick-in, but once they did, I was convinced I wouldn't be able to render what I was witnessing in words. The welcome sign outside of Buellton, California proudly declares that Buellton [...]

Last year it was weed grinders with Wavves , now it's coloring books with Foo Fighters . Novelty is the champion of memory, and the Foo Fighters will make a lasting impression with a 52-page coloring book. As part of their tour supporting Wasting Light , not only will they enrich minds with awesome brain knowledge, but also embrace a creative side! Invented as a tour rider for backstage pals and the production crew, the activity book was created primarily by Foo Fighter's tour manager, [...]
Matt Feeney : It seems a telling sign of our technology-angst that we're getting nostalgic for, of all things, boredom. I have memories of youthful boredom that are as vivid and unpleasant as the memories I harbor of my more serious sports injuries, and yet, when I read of some new research saying the brain needs boredom, or kids today aren't bored enough, my first thought is: Ah, blessed boredom. (My second thought is: Check email. ) And it's not just me. A trickle of pro-boredom research has inspired a flood [...]

Mala in Se is this metal punk noise outfit from Cincinnati, Ohio which could be art if you consider huge cannon like nailguns something you'd want to hang in a audio gallery. This is what the music sounds like. Have no fear for a trio they sound like 10 men battling to an epic death with their guitars on fire on Phratry Records . If you like the boredoms you surely will pick up on the strangeness of music that Mala in Se sculp. Not sure what the hell the band name means but they do their [...]

Longstanding favorites Gang Gang Dance's fifth album Eye Contact is one of 2011's best. You've heard the 11-minute opener " Glass Jar ." This video for another standout "MindKilla" was directed by the Boredoms' Shoji Goto. It may remind you of iTunes Visualizer. Read More...

Out of a mixture of boredom and intrigue (but mainly boredom), I decided to dig into our post history and tally up the amount of times we've used various words and/or phrases as music descriptors. The results are both hilarious and terrifying. Remind us to never use any of these ever again. "Lo-fi" — 43 "Lovely" — 40 "Indie" — 28 "Chillwave" — 26 "Hook" (and all variations) — 25 "Hazy" [...]

Tweet OOIOO is the side-project of Boredoms drummer, Yoshimi. The band says that their songwriting process usually begins with improvisation sessions. You can almost hear that creative process in "Grow Sound Tree", from the album 'Gold and Green' (2000). It starts out a little weird but builds and comes together over the course of the song, culminating in a satisfying ending. This long spacey/psychedelic jam sort of reminded me of a Four Tet song in its punchy drums and the way that it grows and develops. [...]
