![The Smoker's Club [Method Man, Curren$y, Big K.R.I.T.] - The Paradise (Boston, MA; Nov 23, 2011)](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3891091_lg.jpg)
'Twas the night before Thanksgiving, and after 35 cities, The Smoker's Club tour planted in Boston for its final night. It was a tightly rolled evening, with four hours of entertaining hip-hop that brought MC after MC to the stage in front of an adoring audience. Sure it helped that each opening act was announced by Shiest Bubz (purple sour!), whose shopping bags of swag kept the crowd excited to catch a free smoke. Swag, plus a high level of cannabis and nicotine buzz, made for an intoxication slightly "legal" for the mostly 18+ throng pushed [...]

The Barr Brothers' self-titled debut was one of my most anticipated releases of the year, and it's done anything but disappoint since it's release in September. Lush, textured folk that finds the sweet spot between ambition and restraint. It's one of my favorite records of the year. I missed them the last couple times they were in town, so I'm especially excited to see The Barr Brothers live for the first time this Thursday at Cafe 939. Jocie Adams of The Low Anthem (who performs on The Barr Brothers' album) will support - just another reason [...]

I'm not sure any collection of words or set of images can really do justice to what it's like to catch a Deer Tick show right now. This is a band in their prime. They don't care who you think they should be. They know who they are, they know what they're doing and they're perfectly fucking fine with it. Now that's not to say they don't want you to like them. It's quite evident from lead man John McCauley's presence on stage that he wants you to enjoy yourself as much [...]

How do you match up a live show to a contender for album of the year? Be M83 . The following are ways to be M83 live. 1. "Intro." Open with it. Definitely do not forget to bring the character on the cover of "Midnight City" to scare the pants off the audience first. 2. During "Intro," don't stop building, and when you think you can't build anymore, stand on a monitor and assert your rock-star status before launching into the ending, at which point, you may allow the audience to [...]

When I was in fourth grade, I bought my first album. By that I mean I personally went out and bought my first album, myself. Granted, I got a ride from my parents and used the allowance money that they had given me, but it was all me. That album was the Foo Fighters' The Colour And The Shape . With that said, there is no inherent bias in this review, I promise. I took my seat in the sold-out arena and did what I had to do in an arena—justify being there. [...]

"Good afternoon," muttered Dawes front man Taylor Goldsmith into the mic. He's mocking Boston's Royale - in the kindest way possible of course. If there was one thing that was tighter than the harmonies Friday night, it was the schedule. Increasingly early start times have become the joke within Boston's music scene. I was bummed to have missed The Belle Brigade , whose set started at 6 that evening. Sorry guys, I wanted to check you out! On a more positive note, the [...]

[ You didn't think they were going to leave you hanging, did you? That's not The Hush Now's style. In this episode of the band's Memos Tour Diary, bassist Pat MacDonald recounts the whirlwind of the tour's final days en route to the quintet's triumphant homecoming set at Precinct in Somerville, Mass. last weekend. Billmates Soccer Mom and Chandeliers also turned in jaw-dropping sets, as a result of which we were smiling all night. In case you are just tuning in, we reviewed The Hush Now's new record Memos right [...]

When Joe Pug and his bandmates took to the stage last Friday night, it was the sparsest crowd I've seen him perform for since the beginning of his Pickathon set in 2009 (see photos starting at #58.) That performance that ended up packed to the gills with sweaty and appreciative fans. Standing at the back of Somerville Theater , handing my ticket to the gentlemen showing people to their seats I expected the same thing to happen. I exclaimed to my new friend: "I can't believe there's no one here to see Joe Pug." [...]

In the annals of rock history, few bands are more misunderstood than Steely Dan . Their lyrics are strange and complicated, and their chord progressions are closer to Miles Davis than they are to anyone else in the Rock and Hall of Fame. Perhaps this is best illustrated by the fact that the "Steely Dan Chord" is common terminology in jazz circles. Their fusion of rock, jazz, blues and funk has led to a legion of both hard-core fans and critics, and a wider audience of casual listeners most familiar with their handful of radio hits. The band – [...]

It was something special to have a packed Paradise Rock Club singing and dancing to The Shins --an intimate setting to relive college and high school memories of when indie music first mattered to a wide audience. Sure the band is still capable of filling larger, arena-approaching venues, but placed within a club setting, there was a stronger communion between artist and audience. Perhaps that's what James Mercer needs right now. I've been scratching my head about The Shins since Wincing the Night Away , and four years is a [...]

It was an extra muggy night and a packed house for Thursday's show at Great Scott. These were not exactly ideal conditions for the predominantly bearded and flannel-clad audience. Fortunately, everyone seemed willing to deal with some sweaty discomfort for the sake of seeing Brown Bird and their two openers. They were rewarded with a stunning and, at times, incredibly moving show. melophobe favorite Mister Sister took the stage first. Starting off the performance a cappella, lead singer Amelia Emmet captivated the audience and [...]

It must be tough to find good fits to open for tUnE-yArDs now that Merrell Garbus et. al. have made the leap to sellout headliners. tUnE-yArDs' music shares little kinship with prevailing indie rock tropes, and not just because Garbus doesn't bother with guitars, or that she doesn't bother with a stringency of structure. Other bands may be composing poems (if they're lucky). Garbus is, in a very particular sense, writing sonnets. So perhaps Prussia were as good a pairing as one can expect. A bunch of boys with guitars, they did [...]

When we interviewed Frankmusik this past spring, he told us, "Just being in the room with Andy [Bell] and Vince [Clarke] at 25 is incredible. They are the most genuine people, and they do music for the right reasons." With impressive success in the UK, Bell and Clarke asked Frankmusik to produce the forthcoming Erasure album, Tomorrow's World and to support part of their related tour. And yes, "being in the room" with Erasure seemed to inspire Frankmusik, as he played an opening set at the House of Blues , full of youthful energy. At times, [...]

With dozens of tiny lights reflecting on his face, Erasure's Andy Bell looked down at his jacket and noted, "Sequins are a drag queen's best friend." And that red sequined jacket was just the first of Bell's three fabulous wardrobe choices (see photos for a laced-up vest and a skin-tight Sex Pistols tank-top). For more than twenty years, Bell has delivered Erasure's melodramatic synth-pop with the fun and mawkishness it deserves. Saturday's show at the House of Blues was no exception. While most of the songs saw Bell strutting, twirling, and [...]

After arriving back in Cambridge for another delightful year of cluttered class schedules, early morning practice and two a days, and 17 feet of snow come October, I was thrilled to discover that there is a plethora of EDM goodness coming to Boston. It looks like the Boston hipsters have wised up and embraced EDM over indie as the new thing to hate. I hate hipsters. Embrace will be presenting the first of many events at the Middle East club by bringing in Bot and Phra to crook up some delectable vitamins with their flangers and ringmodulators. The Italian duo [...]

A surprising fervor and energy from The Drowning Men opened the evening, a welcomed arrival by the many fans who had clearly come to see a later act (based on the number of Alkaline Trio shirts) all pressed against the barrier. Not even ten seconds into the first song, everyone was moving and evidently enjoying themselves. And there's no question as to why; The Drowning Men know how to win over a crowd, and their passionate musicianship engages. Watching mewithoutYou perform is almost like a rebirth. There's an incomparable, spiritual [...]

On a rainy, dreary Wednesday night, Berklee's Cafe 939 offered a cozy sanctuary from the elements outside and a strong line-up of three thoughtful songwriters and their bands. Sadly, few were there to witness. This certainly isn't the first time we've seen this happen. The thin crowd recalled a Wye Oak show where musicians outnumbered fans and a Cryptacize show with ten people and overflowing toilets. Considering this felt like a private show with a dozen or so new friends, I hesitate to document this special evening. So instead [...]

I'm pretty sure the melophobe crew, collectively, have seen the Antlers more than any other band this past year (I count at least five shows). We love the band's live performance so much, that two of us even g-chatted through their entire NPR SXSW live stream, texting Chris Barth every time we saw him in the crowd. And as we first saw in Austin --where they premiered their latest release Burst Apart --the new album is just as emotionally gripping as Hospice when performed live. And dare I say, profoundly more sexy. Opening their [...]
