The Bowery Presents have announced an expanded channel and presence on YouTube, promising lots of video content including concert webcasts. Pitchfork Media has also announced an official YouTube channel for their popular Pitchfork TV video programs...

[Photo by acidjack] It's one thing to be unaware of an amazing live act for far too long; it's another for them to be from your own backyard and to be totally clueless about them until they're opening for an established band at Bowery Ballroom . But such is the truth of my discovery of Brooklyn's Superhuman Happiness , and I'm happy to say I'm glad I made my way to them eventually, even if I arrived late to the party. Like the band they were opening for , Superhuman Happiness utilize a [...]

[Photos by acidjack] Rubblebucket is a Brooklyn-by-way-of-Vermont band that is building a fan base the old-fashioned way: outstanding live shows and the positive word of mouth that results. With a touring schedule that has blanketed the eastern seaboard and made them regulars in their home region, the band has come by every new fan and every new gig as honestly as possible. That's why, although you may have never heard of them, they sold out the Bowery Ballroom handily on a Saturday night. They may have gotten their start on the college music circuit, [...]

[photo courtesy of Maryanne Ventrice and Impose Magazine ] When acidjack recorded Suuns in January at Rock Shop , he noted the versatility of the band and the "controlled intensity" that the band brings to each song. By December, when I recorded their show at Webster Hall opening for The Antlers , Sunns seem to have perfected that approach. In one of the best-received opening sets we've seen in quite some time, Suuns began with the new 123 b-side "Red Song" (streaming below), which presaged the compelling [...]

The Capitol Theatre (note the new URL), located in Port Chester, NY, was built in 1926 and has been the home for a number rock concerts over the years, including shows by Pink Floyd , Janis Joplin , The Grateful Dead , and others. By the 1980s, the theatre began to book less and less concerts and more recently it has been used for events like weddings and bar mitzvahs. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Ex-Wetlands owner/current Brooklyn Bowl owner Peter Shapiro , [...]

[photo courtesy of Melissa Neira ] On Sunday night at Bowery Ballroom , Atlas Sound performed damned near the perfect concert. This was a performer of immense talents playing nearly two hours of superb music - much of it from his acclaimed new album - at the City's best sounding venue. We make no secret of our admiration for Bradford Cox on this site, but this was Bradford at a level of excellence that we had not previously witnessed. Over the last two years, we've seen the development of the Parallax [...]

[photo courtesy of Mike Benigno and Bowery House List ] It was slightly less than a year ago that an opening set at Bowery Ballroom by The War On Drugs so floored us with its intensity and purpose that we vowed never to miss them again. They have been on NYCTaper four times this year, and have quite literally never disappointed. At Bowery on Sunday night, it was the band's headlining coming out party and the sold-out crowd were treated to another taste of excellence. War On Drugs latest [...]

[photo courtesy of JeremyEye ] About midway through the Antlers show at Webster Hall last night, I took a stroll around the venue just to try to take it all in. The 1200+ capacity venue was literally packed to the walls - it wasn't an easy stroll. But the take-away is that this band can fill a venue of this size on a busy Friday night when concert-goers had many other choices. In the Antlers biggest ever show in NYC, the band delivered the goods. It was a ninety-minute set limited only in [...]
[photo courtesy of Chris at Music Snobbery ] Tribes have hit it big in their native England less than a year since their debut. Its easy to see why. The two EPs the band has released in 2011 are both packed with irresistible power pop, which borrows from Big Star at its most inspired and Cheap Trick at its most polished - and adds a Brit flavor. Tribes arrived on the US shores just a few days ago, and played their first-ever NYC show last night at Mercury Lounge . Apparently, the brit-buzz [...]

[photos courtesy of Jill and For the Love of Brooklyn ] It's been a busy month for Crossbill Record's The Loom , a band that is no stranger to nyctaper.com. We were fortunate enough to catch them this weekend at Mercury Lounge while the band finishes up their recent tour, along with the band BOBBY, in support of the album Teeth which was released in November. The Loom also completed a Daytrotter session this past month and from what we saw during this Saturday night performance it was [...]

[photo courtesy of Dana Lynne ] My favorite moment of this moe. concert sort of encapsulates the dedication of this long-running prog-jam band and the allure that they offer dedicated followers. In a well-planned act of tribute to their friend, at the very moment when "Rebubula" returns from near silence to a resounding jam, two of taper T.J.'s buddies shouted for all of the microphones to capture " TJ Samulis 100th show!". For those who think tapers are humorous killjoys, I thought this was not only hilarious but also a great little "watermark" on [...]

[Photo courtesy of Brian Stollery] Another of the bands we make no secret of our love for is Real Estate . Over the past three years that we have been following the band, we have watched the mature and develop sonically, culminating with their release of the new album Days on Domino Recording Company - their first for the tastemaking label. Days continues a run of good news for the band, who have continued to tour hard and earn accolades from critics and fans alike. This show at [...]

Courtesy: Patrick J. Eves of Hippie Death Bed American/Australian affinity has grown as of late. Barack Obama recently toured the island continent and announced the opening of a new military base in Durban, Australia alongside his counterpart, Ms. Julia Gillard. At around the same time, in the spirit of A NZ US cooperation, Sydney outfit The Jezabels performed a gig this past Monday evening at the Mercury Lounge in the Lower East Side in support of the recent release of their first LP, Prisoner . - [...]

[photo courtesy of Dan Meade from Gig Ape ] It was undoubtedly one of the most memorable concert experiences of my life - The Replacements at The Ritz in the Summer of 1986. The band was apparently riding high, touring on one of the greatest albums of the era Tim . The album was released in the Fall of 1985, and by the Summer of '86 it established The Replacements as the foremost alternative band of the time. The motley crew of Midwest punks had matured into a powerful unit [...]

[iPhone photo by acidjack] After I posted my recording of The Sea and Cake at Bowery Ballroom earlier this month, I received an unusual number of requests to also post my recording of the second opener, Brokeback . I can't say I was surprised. This band, a side project of Tortoise bassist Doug McCombs, released several records on Thrill Jockey in the late 90s and early 2000s, but has been in hibernation since 2008. This reconstituted 2011 version of the band is rehearsing new songs for a record, and playing shows [...]

[photo courtesy of Joshua Trupin ] If you can tell much about someone from the friends they keep, then Mount Moriah has everything going for them. We saw the band open for The Rosebuds last month, the band has been joined at times by Brad Cook and Phil Cook from Megafaun and by Daniel Hart (who seems to play with only the best ), and Mount Moriah will soon tour with The Hold Steady's Craig Finn. But friendship aside, what really separates this band [...]

[photo courtesy of Robert Loerzel ] Last week in the underground Pink Floyd live music collector community, a recording surfaced for the first time in over 40 years. A 1967 performance of the original band with Syd Barrett in Stockholm was recorded by a local archivist and at long last reached collectors around the world. The proto-psychedelic music was groundbreaking in the mid-60s, but across four decades even this technologically-challenged recording is still fresh and exciting. The palpable energy of the songs and the ferocious nature of the improvisation is breathtaking. Its no wonder that [...]

[Photos courtesy of Patrick Proctor at Hippies Are Dead ] "We feel like we're in the Deep South," said The Sea and Cake 's Sam Prekop somewhere mid-set at the Bowery Ballroom this Tuesday. "And that's a compliment." No doubt Sam was referring to the level of enthusiasm from this weeknight crowd, including at least one audience member who seemed to think it was a Motley Crue concert. To hear a girl screaming "Bring the fuckin' heat!" in between songs at an almost professorially mild-mannered, jazz-influenced Chicago indie act was certainly a new one [...]

[photo courtesy of Chris La Putt and Brooklynvegan ] Condo Fucks exist as an alternative reality where Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley and James McNew can perform as an authentic 602s garage band playing a selection of eclectic covers without the need to actually be Yo La Tengo at any point during the evening. On Friday night at Mercury Lounge , the alter-ego of one of the favorite bands of this site delivered a blistering thirty-five minute set that left the packed crowd shaking their heads in awe. [...]

[Photo courtesy of Shaun Regan at eardrumnyc ] Since we first caught them at the Market Hotel back when they were a mostly-unknown Florida band, Surfer Blood have become a bit of an indie staple. And for good reason: Their sound is infectious, upbeat and delivered with a great attitude. After touring the hell out of their breakout debut Astro Coast, the band began writing the new material that eventually became their new EP release, Tarot Classics . Several of those songs were on display at this momentous occasion, a sellout [...]
