We are very proud to bring you Detroit-based producer Black Noi$e 's debut release on Potholes Music, the $$$ EP. FACT described lead single "Jester" as "uneasy" and a "treat for fans of off-kilter beats that bounce"-we couldn't agree more. That sentiment rings true across much of $$$ , a five-track foray into sounds Black Noi$e calls on as inspiration. There are distinct house and techno influences running through the EP, though hip-hop pokes its head through on closing track "Win Win". It's a collaboration with fellow Potholes Music artist Jay Cue [...]
It's been a busy month between lots of shows and a trip to the Pacific Northwest , but even with all that has been going on, I've kept up with listening to new bands everyday. Here's what I listened to during the month of March! March 1 - Reviving Cecilia - I probably should have known about this band since they were covered on The Ruckus before , but there is so much out there, it's hard to keep track! I'm glad I found them myself during this project since [...]
THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Big Jesus w/ Manray, The Dirty Magazines Saturday, March 30 The Earl - 466 Flat Shoals Avenue in Atlanta 30316 Admission $5 ADV / $7 DOS / Purchase Tickets When Big Jesus announced its return from an extended hiatus early this year, it was welcome news, but it also felt a little like a game of musical chairs. Here was former O'Brother guitarist Aaron Womack being brought in to play drums, while Spencer Ussery and C.J. Ridings [...]
If 2011 was the year I dove headlong into local music , then 2012 was the year that I really began to dissect and discern the artists and the community that create the music (or at least I hope that's something of the impression that I've been leaving on the pages of this blog). Among the multitude of reasons I continue to do this, lying near the top, is watching local artists develop and grow (or in many cases, regress)—the choices they make, the strategies they employ, the trends they embrace. It's a fascinating slice of human theater and [...]
"A standout on one of the year’s best debuts, 'Doused' is an intricate rock song that manages to sound different from just about anything else out there. With a guitar riff that hauntingly pervades the whole song and vocals that are only partly discernable, DIIV has created a benchmark for their future recordings, a lofty standard that their next songs will be measured against."
Earlier this year, the Baltimore band Lower Dens released their very good, krautrock-skewing sophomore album Nootropics , and my daughter still can't fall asleep without listening to it. On the new three-song EP Nootropics Remixed , the Danish dance producer Trentemøller reworks first single " Brains ," keeping the central pulse and the Jana Hunter vocal intact but carefully coloring around the edges with splasy synth sounds. Listen to it below. Read More...

THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Lightning Bolt w/ God's Balls, El Fossil Friday, August 24 The Goat Farm - 1200 Foster Street in Atlanta 30318 Admission $12 / Purchase Tickets Leave it to me to split town on one of the best live music weekends of the entire year. Not only is Atlanta getting its yearly bludgeoning courtesy of Nophest (now in its sixth year) and its non-stop four-day barrage of local music events, but there's also some fantastic national acts stopping [...]
Relative newcomers Brain have been making their presence felt in Atlanta the old-fashioned way—by gigging the hell out of the city and placing themselves and their music in front of as many potential fans as possible. They've supported this gush of live performances with a steady stream of solid singles, the latest being "HUM," released last Friday. Musically it lacks the ambition of their debut track, "Baby Eyes (Brainsurf Babality)," or the grandiose flair of its bombastic followup, "Aim for the Chest," but what it does bring to the table is an aggressive and [...]
THIS WEEK'S BEST BET: Russian Circles w/ Chelsea Wolfe, Marriages Tuesday, August 14 The Earl - 466 Flat Shoals Avenue in Atlanta 30316 Admission $10 / Purchase Tickets Touring in support of their most accomplished release to date, Empros , Chicago-based post-metal trio Russian Circles are coming back to Atlanta to obliterate whatever residual fragments are left of your brain after last year's mind-blowing set at the Earl . If for some inexplicable reason you've never made it out [...]
It's been a while since I've posted up anything from the pride of Seattle, Dyme Def (a good couple of years in fact). So let's right that wrong right now. Ladies and gents, may I present to you, Errythang Gang, the latest side project from DD member Brain and a gentleman by the name of Young Gizzle (I'm hoping that's pronounced with a 'g' rather than a 'j' sound). I know very little about Errythang Gang (aside of the wealth of information I've laid on you above), but a good song is [...]

Caligola – “Smash Dem Brains In” – video
The artist collective Caligola , where members from Mando Diao participate, released the EP "Back to Earth: Resurrection" in December. The first single from the the EP is the anti-rasist "Smash Dem Brains In", which is a cover of Linton Kwesi Johnson's song "Fite Dem Back". The EP was a great listening experience and feels like a patchwork of styles from now and then, in the same spirit of exploring as the debut album "Back to Earth" from last year. I just had to add the soul-vibing "Forgive Forget" from "Back to Earth" also here below. Caligola [...]

O.K. brain, let's do this.
I barely slept last night. When you're told to "rest your brain," and you're an over-thinker like me that leads you to spend half the night awake worrying that your brain is over-thinking stuff so much it will be even more damaged and useless in the morning. It also means you keep thinking off all the stuff you need to do which leads to non-stop late night ideating (and, once you slip into sleep, dreams about the results of that ideation) and it's like a closed track with Matchbox cars vrooming faster and faster until it takes all your control [...]
