[Stephen Bruner, a.k.a. Thundercat] Stephen Bruner's " Heartbreaks + Setbacks" is a single off of his forthcoming LP titled "Apocolypse" out via Brainfeeder on July 7th. The heart-felt single was co-produced by Brainfeeding cohorts Mono/Poly and Flying Lotus , and each artist can be heard distinctly within the track. Thundercat's fingers skittering all over the bass guitar, Flying Lotus's atmospheric chord progressions, and Mono/Poly's signature 'apreggiated' synth lines all come together to create an emotional piece of artwork. The photograph above was taken at Flying Lotus' studio shortly after a jarring DMT trip on the morning of February 2nd, 2012. It was Groundhog's Day and someone mistook Snarf for a groundhog and the next thing you know, this jam was recorded. It was epic and transcendent and the sounds of the Snarf are submerged in the recording. HEADPHONE MUSIC. None of this is true. Nor do I have any information that Eddie Murphy's "Party all the Time" played any role in it's influence. Nonetheless, I will believe that it did. The Thundercat album does for jazz [...]

Star Slinger remixes one of Tokimonsta's most surprising collaborations to date. Usually veering to the experimental or lo-fi side of the spectrum, Brainfeeder artist Tokimonsta released "The Force" with Kool Keith, a Brooklyn rapper who has been doing his thing since the 802s. Once Star Slinger got his hands on the track he flipped it into a catchy garage house track. TOKiMONSTA - The Force Feat. Kool Keith (Star Slinger Remix) The post Stream: TOKiMONSTA - The Force Feat.

Los Angeles slow-burner Azizi Gibson just dropped a new track fresh from the Brainfeed labs. "SSB (100MPH)" has all the percussive energy of ATL trap with Gibson's OFWGKTA-meets-Eddie-Murphy delivery and the retrofuturist sampladelia characteristic of Flying Lotus's Brainfeeder crew. A few hiccups in what is not an entirely natural combination, but Gibson knits it together: he's a charismatic rhymer with a confident cadence. Look forward to his new tape .

Thundercat may look like Will.i.am with a laurel wreath in the picture above, but don't let that fool ya, this guy's got soul - not that Will doesn't, just not so much. From the first two tracks I've listened to of Thundercat's, thanks to Flying Lotus' Brainfeeder label, it's plain to see he brings a vocal sentiment to his funky, bass guitar jams. I haven't heard the rest of Thundercat's Apocalypse album yet, but I hope it keeps up the consistency of "Heartbreaks + Setbacks" & 'Oh Sheit It's X.' I need me some [...]

All Thundercat wants to do is party, sliding along the dancefloor in ecstasy. That's all the guy wants to do and he'll be damned if some buzzkilling chick's going to stand in his way. Sure, he mentions on his Flying Lotus- and Mono/Poly-produced track "Oh Sheit It's X," he'd love if this woman, with the nice leather purse, joined him to revel in this ecstasy. But over a beat ripped straight from the '80s, which is so infectiously funky it probably should've been the background music to one of the later "Beverly Hills Cop" movies, [...]

The second single from Brainfeeder resident funk bassist Thundercat's upcoming LP, "Oh Sheit It's X," is an uproarious joy. It seemed pretty improbable to follow up the wondrous nature of " Heartbreaks + Setbacks " with its tiding experimental tones, but "Oh Sheit It's X" does its best to revisit Thundercat's '70s inspirations. Check out the new track below. Thundercat's Apocalypse LP will be released June 9 on Brainfeeder.
Bass master Thundercat has dropped yet another track from his sophomore full-length, which is on the way soon via Brainfeeder records. The track's title is "Oh Sheit It's X," and it's led to yet another moment where I'm left wondering how good this album is actually going to be. Thundercat's first album took on many of the same funk and jazz fusion influences the song above does, but translated them into something futuristic, intergalactic thanks to production help from longtime collaborator Flying Lotus. This new cut takes a lot of the same funk tropes, [...]

The Gaslamp Killer has released a video for the massively heavy closing track to his latest full-length album, Breakthrough . It's an incredible track that features wailing synths, ear-shattering percussion, and dramatic strings. It's got some incredible textures on it, and I'm glad to see this monolithic beatmusic matched with some visuals of equal intensity. Enjoy! Check a review for Breakthrough below:
There's a certain, and certainly clichéd rigmarole which greets the every peep made by Steven Ellison and subsequently articulated via his Flying Lotus SoundCloud account, with every unapologetically scrappy cut and iffy glitch hyped up and machined about to ludicrous, and indeed ludicrously excessive ubiquity. Though S.D.S. – a woozy galaxy bounce once employed as backing for reputedly precocious Pittsburgh wordsmith Mac Miller, the initialism signifying Somebo dy Do Something – is the sort of gently jazzy instrumental to have become Ellison's stock-in-trade around the time of the irreproachable Cosmogramma . And only once unstuck from Miller's wack gumball rhymes does this [...]

"I'm not making party music. I'm making head music." [...]

When you put Thundercat and Flying Lotus on the same track, it's pretty much guaranteed to sound fantastic. The Brainfeeder label mates have been regular collaborators on both Thundercat and FlyLo's recent albums. This new track will be part of Thundercat's upcoming album. If you haven't heard his first album, Golden Age of Apocalypse, it's incredible from beginning to end. This new track picks up right where he left off, and it seems the rest of the album will be just as great - with FlyLo [...]

On Tuesday Steven Ellison, aka Flying Lotus , confirmed that he is currently working on a jazz fusion project via Twitter. Little more is known about the project, though it was reported last month that the producer was working with none other than Herbie Hancock. While it seems like a surprising leap for Ellison, it actually makes a lot of sense as the producer turns out to be the great-nephew of John Coltrane and has always worn his fondness for jazz on his sleeve. Frequent collaborator Thundercat is also said to [...]

After we heard prolific Brainfeeder bass embassador Thundercat's debut album, The Golden Age of the Apocalypse , it was safe to assume that the creative relationship between Flying Lotus and Thundercat would be one of the most productive and important collaborations of this decade. Yes, Stephen Bruner aka Thundercat has only released one album, but his bass work has been present in Flying Lotus' music since the mind-blowing and critically acclaimed Cosmogramma, where his free jazz sensibilities created some of the most transcendent moments on the LP. Beyond that, the two have proven to possess crazy experimental boundary-pushing [...]

Bassist Stephen Bruner aka Thundercat is set to release his new record Apocalypse on May 9th via BrainFeeder. Flying Lotus produced the record, and you can have a taste of how good this will be from first single “Heartbreaks + Setbacks”. Lightning quick R&B melodies blast away over a glitchy jazz background that is just to infectious for words. The incredible production is what sets this apart from pretty much everything else.

Brainfeeder's resident bass funk and soul standby Thundercat has announced the follow up to his 2011 breakout Golden Age of the Apocalypse with the shortened Apocalypse . The first single, "Heartbreaks + Setbacks," features frequent Thundercat collaborator and all-around great guy Flying Lotus on production, which gives a wonderfully distorted atmosphere to the liberating vocals. Check the single out below and grab Apocalypse July 9.
