The Inertia has posted a particularly in-depth interview with The Lawrence Arms and Wandering Birds ' own Brendan Kelly. The article talks about everything from the Goo Goo Dolls influence on his vocals, Van Halen , Billie Joe (of Green Day , Tyler the Creator , Louie , Groundhog Day and much more. Lyrics are a major part of the interview, with Kelly defending a recent lyric-related Internet controversy - which you could probably generalize to [...]

Brendan Kelly of The Lawrence Arms has written a somber and somewhat lengthy blog posting about " malfunctioning computers " and the long-term consequences to the country. He explained: Here on earth, when you're born, you're issued a computer. [...] Some people's computers start out fine, but then someone else with a faulty computer goes in and rewires it and fucks their computer all up in the process. In short, there are a lot of extremely powerful computers out there, with unbelievable potential that are malfunctioning. The funny thing is, here in America, we've [...]

I've been an advocate of Sam Russo's for a couple of years now. The man sometimes known as The White Wizard (but not in one of those racist kind of ways) has been roaming around playing his songs to anyone who'll listen. For my money, he's one of the best songwriters of this generation. So when he got signed to Red Scare, and the hype machine got going, earlier this year I couldn't have been happier for him. One cold morning in Manchester, Hannah and I met up with Sam to talk about playing with Lucero, touring with [...]

Sam Russo’s first proper full-length has been a long time coming. Having released a few smaller-scale recordings online, as well as a split with Chuck Ragan last year, fans are finally getting something a little more substantial from the Cantabrigian singer/songwriter. But now he’s done done what the people wanted, the question is, does the finished product live up to expectations? I’m happy to report that ‘Storm’ ticks all the right boxes; but that’s not to say it’s exactly what people might expect from a Sam Russo record. They say you’ve got to go big or go home [...]

...Pitch black spiraling and inventive cry baby music - Hamish Adams (Bangers) I was first introduced to Sam Russo just over a year ago when he played a house show in Manchester. I'd been sent a little of his music in preparation and I loved it. The recordings were rough, but his talent for songwriting was immediately apparent. This became even clearer after watching him play live. I now understood why so many people were excited that he was in town. After his set, I remember drunkenly introducing myself and buying a t-shirt. For some reason, he gave me [...]

To celebrate the birth of their burgeoning side projects, Dan Andriano and Brendan Kelly have headed out on tour in Europe. The Chicagoan pair have been playing sold out show after sold out show here in the UK (alongside, friend of The Ruckus, Sam Russo) and are just a few days away from crossing into the mainland. As a gift to us all, the pair put together a split EP, aptly titled, ‘European Vacation’. ‘The Radiator’, my favourite of the two tracks, is a wholly acoustic effort from Dan Andriano [In The Emergency Room]. It’s simple, poignant and [...]

The Switchboard Sessions recently posted an article on The Lawrence Arms bassist, Brendan Kelly . In the article, Kelly discusses his love for Lady Gaga and his latest project, Brendan Kelly and the Wandering Birds . The article also features two songs Kelly recorded exclusively for the website on April Fools Day from his Chicago home while his two children were sleeping. The two songs are "YourMother" from Brendan Kelly and the Wandering Birds' 2012 release, I'd Rather Die Than Live Forever , and a cover of Lady Gaga's "Hair". [...]

Brendan Kelly can be called many things but, "unproductive," is not one of them. Kelly has been recording music since the age of 10, touring in bands since high school, appeared on dozens of albums and somewhere found time to graduate college. Now, Kelly leads a bit more formatted lifestyle but has managed to stay productive and connected, first through his blog ( The Bad Sandwich Chronicles ) and more recently with a short film ( The Spirit of Transparency ) and the release of his solo debut, I'd Rather Die Than Live Forever . Older, darker and [...]

After the minor avalanche of criticism thrown at former Fall Out Boy vocalist Patrick Stump due to his semi-retirement from performing, fellow illinoisan and Lawrence Arms co-vocalist Brendan Kelly has come to his defense. Kelly noted: Right away, I'll tell you that Pat's piece is refreshingly sincere and unguarded while still being self-aware enough to realize that he's gonna get even more shit for daring to express dissatisfaction with what many consider to be an ideal life. Again, that's how it is. I've said it before and I'll [...]

After dropping hints for the past six months or so about a new solo project, Brendan Kelly of The Lawrence Arms , The Falcon and Slapstick has revealed the name of his new solo project: Brendan Kelly and the Wandering Birds . The name, is a nerdy reference to the Wandervogel of Germany; groups formed in the late 1800s whose wanted to escape the confines of society and return to nature and freedom. (Thanks college!) He made the announcement on his blog : [...]

Brendan Kelly unveiled his plans for a new album on his blog, Bad Sandwich Chronicles . After a lot of whinging about getting older and not behaving like 21-year on Spring Break anymore he gets to the meat of it: To answer some questions that may arise: it's not Lawrence Arms, it's not the Falcon and it's not just me and an acoustic guitar. It's me and a rotating cast of musicians notably held down by Shawn Astrom, Eric Halborg and Nick Martin, all of whom contribute their expertise (but never all at the same time). It [...]
