Somber yet tuneful, the Suede frontman's latest digital single is of a caliber to match his band's best efforts. Between the omnipresent, stark somberness, the title track's chorus-drenched lead guitar line, and the reappropriation of a Joy Division title for the b-side "Isolation", the new Brett Anderson digital single is drenched in early '80s post-punk signifiers. However, once you hear the Suede frontman interject his quivering croon into the proceedings, it's impossible to mistake this record for the work of anyone else. No matter that the post-punk revival peaked years ago, "Crash About to...

by Stephanie Stevens-Wade After last week's 'girls' theme I can safely say that this week is a pic'n'mix week, from British indie groups to Australian solo artists, wannabe pop stars to has-been rockers. The last week in November is the last window before the Christmas covers and re-releases take over the charts and airwaves, so enjoy this carefully picked selection before another TV advert persuades you to download 'All I Want For Christmas' again. (I may have thrown one festive single in for good measure as the week ends in December after all and I just [...]

Had Suede continued releasing music instead of breaking up in the early 2000s, an album like former frontman Brett Anderson's Black Rainbows could easily have been the band's current offering. This isn't a bad thing, though. Anderson's solo work in these intervening years honors his former group. With Black Rainbows, Anderson carries on many of the structural and aesthetical elements that characterized Suede's songs and set the band apart from its '90s Britpop contemporaries. His high, clear vocals come to the forefront of each track but are never in opposition to the music. The arrangement [...]

Groaning and moaning Brett Anderson releases black rainbows. This is Former vocalist of Suede and the Tears fourth solo album. I wish I could say I am impressed due to my appreciation for Suede and Anderson's ability to sing androgynously and pain fueled. However this style is much better suited for the groundbreaking Antony or PJ Harvey. Black Rainbows is more or less perpetually uninteresting. Anderson's voice range has reached the point of unlistenable and doesn't invite listeners in with anything particularly interesting. Despite the at times respectable and heartfelt lyrics the album drowns in its own sour [...]

1. Interpol - 'Turn On The Bright Lights' 2. Björk – 'Homogenic' 3. Midlake – 'The Trials of Van Occupanther' [...]

Frank Yang In discussing Ladytron's latest effort Gravity The Seducer , I mentioned how the Liverpool band had managed to pull off the difficult move of shifting creative course sufficiently to earn a fresh listen from those who figured they knew what to expect without abandoning their signature sound and alienating those who were perfectly happy to get what they were expecting from a new Ladytron record. Whether they'd manage to do the same with regards to their live show would be seen this past Wednesday night, when [...]

Let's face it, we're all waiting for a new Suede record so from the outset Black Rainbows reeks of filler. Brett Anderson has already apologised to his Suede band mates about concentrating on recording this album while they raked in the festival dollar this summer, so he knows he's in the wrong. A new Suede record has already been confirmed so why isn't Anderson in a dark room pining over his David Bowie collection with Osman, Gilbert and the boys looking to inspire a new generation of floppy fringed, skinny teens? [...]

Brett Anderson - 'Black Rainbows' // Words: Rajan Lakhani Framed as Brett Anderson 's return to the rock format, 'Black Rainbows' is his fourth solo album release in as many years. It is his best effort yet, displaying a confidence in his songcraft not heard since his time in The Tears , the short-lived reunion with songwriting partner Bernard Butler . There has been a clear sense of progression is [...]
Iconic Suedehead's tenth record proves there's life in the old Dog Man Star yet. A first taste of Black Rainbows should ideally be preceded by an imaginary video montage. In this 'montage du cinema', a shadowy seer would be seen staggering from a cave. Bleary-eyed with wild hair, shaggy beard and dishevelled long, grey robes, ashened by soot and spiders' webs. One hand rising to block out the blistering sun. Then, possibly accompanied by "Eye of the Tiger" and, yes, in split-screen, we would see this hirsute warlock trim...

Frank Yang The narrative around The Horrors' second album Primary Colours was a simple one - the band who made Strange House , with the outlandish costumes and stage names, were no more and in their place was a lean, fearsome combo who weren't part of a shoegaze revival but a shoegaze revitalization. Primary Colours learned from the sound-sculpting lessons of the past and applied them towards creating something familiar yet undeniably fresh. It was a remarkable thing. Their visit in October 2009 [...]

Fat Cat There's been a few pieces recently about the growth of anti-marketing in music, with artists hiding behind disguises or pseudonyms and refusing to engage the media by giving interviews or offering a backstory. Scotland's Twilight Sad can't undo the profile they've gained in the past four or five years of making deafening, gloriously miserable rock music but on their just-announced third record, they're at least trying to get folks to avert their eyes - or at least that's what one surmises from their decision to name it No [...]
