Software is releasing Soft Control , the new ep from BK-based producer and visual artist Slava , on February 14. I've spent the day falling hypnotized to the track "I've Got Feelings Too", which features an infectiously repetitive female vocal uttering the title over and over in a sexy, hushed whisper. Software is probably my favorite label of the moment, so expect much more about their artists here very soon. Get your copy of Soft Control via Mexican Summer .

mp3: Spanish Prisoners - Downtown Chicagoland (guitar arp) Spanish Prisoners are releasing the new single "Downtown Chicagoland" today. The track closes out their very solid debut LP Gold Fools , released back in October 2011. The "Downtown Chicagoland" single comes with two alternate takes on the track including the guitar arp version, which expands on the song's dreamy melancholy tone in a deeper, more profound way. These alternate versions will also be included on the band's forthcoming mixtape PRIOR ART . [...]

Rimar released a brand new album for free with a newly embellished sound to share. A lot less funkier then his last, Rimar has picked up some influences, tones , and textures from his current place of residency in Brooklyn. Its a very transparent and abstract interpretation from Rimar's previous works and almost has no reason or rhyme of focus. This unfocused state leaves Rimar with this perplexing yet soulful sound that resonates for miles. Listen and download it below from his bandcamp ... Rimar - CLOSER (click to download) [...]

Planet High School , the whimsically-titled new album from Brooklyn-based producer and DJ Mux Mool (real name: Brian Lindgren), explores wonkiness in all its woozy glory. Filtered synths, lazily stretched drum loops, and clattering percussion rule the album, which might be better characterized as a sort of abstract beat tape: it's entirely instrumental and rhythmic almost to a fault, something you can consistently nod your head to. On first blush, the influence of hip-hop beatsmiths such as J Dilla and Madlib spring to mind, but on further listening, the headphone-funk of the Neptunes and Timbaland seems to be closer to [...]

[Photo by Ken Grand-Pierre. See his Flickr stream here ] Food Will Win the War may have been opening for the Lemonheads on this night, but they put a headliner-level of intensity into their set of acoustic folk-rock, and were rewarded with a mostly full house to do it. They are one of those big, "musical" bands that puts thought as well as energy into their performances, using their fairly large (six) number of players and diverse instrumentation to produce finely-honed, thoughtful arrangements. Yes, as rock music goes, they are about [...]

Fanfarlo hooks up with the entertaining weirdos of Yeasayer for this official remix of "Shiny Things". This definitely sounds more like a song from the ladder now. Fanfarlo - Shiny Things (Yeasayer Remix) by OffTheRadarMusic

Over the past couple years, Woodsman (recently relocated from Denver to Brooklyn) has been on a vision quest of sorts. Relentlessly touring and honing a sound born in basements and warehouses sprouting from amps and speakers like lichens on the forest floor. Grounded in experimentation and inspired by the films of Stan Brakhage, the band seeks to create visceral tunes born from their environment. The band's two drummers are the focus of the sound, leaving room for the effected sounds conjured by the two guitar players. Constantly moving, shifting their collective consciousness toward something mutual. The band just [...]

James Klynn I first heard of James Klynn fairly recently, when I discovered French singer Maleiva Kem (thank you, Bandcamp recommendations). The two artists are part of a collective called Freedom Hall, that is getting more and more exposure, deservedly so. What I really appreciated straight away with James Klynn, was his writing skills, as well as the themes he chose to touch upon on his different projects. A proud Brooklyn native and resident (hence his artist name), he is providing listeners with some food for thought and encourages them to reflect on political and social [...]

Sounding genuinely, almost terrifyingly like nothing else are Human Teenager who, comprised of New Yoiker Gary War (an original and integral scribble in what later became Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti) and Taylor Richardson of Infinity Window , come together to wallow in aqueous, intermittently murky analogue stylings. Fourth Reich is the first track to be lifted off a full-length entitled Animal Husbandry that's expected March 27th via Spectrum Spools , an imprint of Editions Mego seemingly stamped with the authority of Emeralds' John Elliott - if the limited Soundcloud spiel is to [...]
I saw this band in 2009 in the back room of a Bushwick bar with my pal EE. EE remembers: "Early spring 2009, back room of that bar on Bushwick Ave. I remember cold weather, dirty carpeting, and a weird opening band." Now, they've got Maeby in a music video where NY looks like LA and LA like NY. Movin' on up. I post this track with some reservation, as it tends to get painfully stuck in my head and then I have to sing anything I can think of to get it out [...]
Click here to view the embedded video. Doe Paoro has a big voice. She studies Lhamo — a powerful, unusual, and vocally acrobatic Tibetan-style opera—that she encountered while traveling alone through the Himalayas this past year. I guess her upcoming album Slow To Love was written in solitude at a cabin outside of Syracuse, New York after returning home. Whatever the case, this girl has a big voice that sounds pretty soulful for a buddhist. Slow to Love album [...]
![[Review/Listen] – Hospitality – "Hospitality"](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4046916_lg.jpg)
Tweet From the bouncy jangle of album starter "Eighth Avenue" , it's immediately clear Brooklyn trio Hospitality have come a long way from 2008's debut six song EP – and not just the kind of growth that's afforded when you stop recording in your apartment and actually enter a studio (although that's sure to have had a positive impact as well). On their debut album, Amber Papini captures the ineffable spark of their EP's best tracks and [...]

Stream: Fort Lean - "Sunsick" These locals are never not writing the kinds of anthems that you simply can't help but shout to the heavens. Turn those speakers up as loud as possible, and then go ahead and click play.

As Beach Fossils continue to fine tune their sophomore record, they have released 1st single, "Shallow" to the masses. It contains a lot more "full" sound than we're used to hearing from the hazy beach indie rockers. I always thought they needed that extra "umph" in their music and this track finally delivers on that. If they can keep churning out tunes likes this, I think they have the potential to be have the same kind of break out this year, to which Real Estate had last year. Their b-side to this single, is "Lessons", which [...]

[photo courtesy of Dominick Mastrangelo ] Captured Tracks is on quite an impressive run. The label began as a small Brooklyn boutique a couple of years ago - "CT-013 is the Dum Dum Girls EP Yours Alone . Even at slightly more than 100 actual releases, Captured Tracks has managed to nurture some of the brightest bands around these days, including Widowspeak, Wild Nothing, Hoop Dreams and Beach Fossils. Another superb Captured Tracks discovery was on display at 285 Kent last week. Blouse is a quartet from Portland whose [...]

MP3 : Sing Me Spanish Techno Diehard just released a 4-song covers EP, Old Habits , for free on their Bandcamp page. Fans who pledged at a high level of their Kickstarter campaign were able to request the songs chosen to be covered and now they've been collected for all the world to download . Their debut full length, The Times We Didn't Have Fun , is now available for "name your price". The band has some [...]

Black Marble is Ty Kube and Chris Stewart, who produce somewhat minimalist synth music. With a synth drum beat, a synth melody, and deep, dark vocals, "Pretender" is a song that is one part Joy Division, one part Craft Spells, and one part its own thing. The song can be found on the band's new EP via Hardly Art . It's called Weight Against The Door and it's out digitally now and on vinyl Valentine's Day. Download: "Pretender" by [...]

[ photo by nyctaper ] In the two years since we last checked in with Larkin Grimm , much has happened in her life. When we recorded her at Knitting Factory in December of 2009 , Larkin had a set of excellent new songs and a new album was expected soon. But Larkin received a wonderful gift in the interim - a baby boy. She also parted ways with Young God Records in a split that does not seem to be completely amicable. But in a fashion consistent with her incredible life story , Larkin [...]
