In the blizzard of 1888, the streets disappeared and the snow came down almost horizontally. Imagine being trapped at work, several miles from your home. This was the plight experienced by thousands of New Yorkers (and others throughout the northeast) that Monday. (Library of Congress ) PODCAST This year is the 125th anniversary of one of the worst storms to ever wreak havoc upon New York City, the now-legendary mix of wind and snow called the Great Blizzard of 1888 . Its memory was [...]

Check out the brand new video for Matt & Kim's latest single, Block After Block. The video could not have been a better interpretation of the title, as Matt & Kim take about 30+ friends around New York City, flash mobing some key Big Apple staples such as 30 Rockefeller, Chinatown, Union Square, and the Brooklyn Bridge. They even crammed everyone into a subway! All in all, another great video that fully reflects the fun and excitement of one of the most pleasant and energetic pairs in music today. O S A K A

If you liked my post yesterday about Rain Over St. Ambrose , you'll probably dig this new track from Toronto band Teenage Kicks . Time to give Brooklyn some love. I found this clip of ol' Blue Eyes singing the praises of the Brooklyn Bridge on some sort of Russian version of YouTube. It may load a bit slowly. The scene is from It Happened In Brooklyn , a film that came out in 1947. "Isn't she a beauty? Isn't she a queen? Nicest bridge that I have ever seen."
American Idol winner, Lee DeWyze took the stage at this year's Mix 106.5 "Very Merry Mixxer".
Filed under: News , R.I.P. Doo-Wop singer Johnny Maestro has lost his battle with cancer. The Brooklyn Bridge tenor died Wednesday in Cape Coral, Fla., bandmate Les Cauchi told the Associated Press. Maestro was 70. Maestro started his music career as a vocalist in the New York-based R&B doo-wop group the Crests in the 1950s. The group's biggest hit was '16 Candles,' which rose to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1958 and eventually went gold. In the early '60s, Maestro left the [...]

While the Brill Building (at 1619 Broadway) is known worldwide as the place where 1960's pop music was born (or least written down with pencil and paper), up the street at 1650 Broadway there was plenty of action to be found, as well. By some accounts, 1650 was more the epicenter of pop music than its famous cousin a few blocks south. 1650 was the location of Aldon Music , the music company founded by Don Kirschner and Al Nevins, the publishing home to many of the great "Brill Building" songwriters, including Doc [...]
by rolo skyboy After checking out the video's vibe, this might make for an interesting and energizing Saturday this weekend. The NYC department of streets clears 7 miles of streets for pedestrians and bikers, paving a path from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park in what they call NYC Summer Streets . I'm not sure what the open container or blazing policy is, but a car free zone from 7 A.M. - 1 PM could be pretty cool. It looks like people are exercising so that's something to keep in mind, but free [...]
