Boog Brown - The Brown Study Remixes Mello Music Group: 2011 In my days I've been called a lefty wing nut for some of my ideas around race, gender, sex and power. Yet when it comes to my taste in rap music I couldn't be more patriarchal and sexist. Shit, call me the Akinyele of rap appreciation. Outside a few late Golden Era singles from Latifah and Lyte, and the material Lauryn, Foxy and Kim released in the mid 90s, you won't find me praising or playing much rap with a [...]
CLICK IMAGE TO WATCH VIDEO I told you about AMiAM's new mixtape Legend and more specifically the single I Got a Story before my holidays and I am now catching up with what he's been up to since then.... [[ This is a content summary only. Visit my website for full links, other content, and more! ]]

I Got a Story feat. BrownStudy (prod Reeplay) Following the release of the epic We Got That , Orlando-based AMiAM is sharing another track from his upcoming mixtape entitled Legend , that should drop anytime now. While the previous track sounded like an anthem where AMiAM was surrounded by many of his homies, this one has a much smoother vibe and is the occasion for the MC to showcase his story-telling and writing skills. A video is in the works as we speak and should be online shortly. The micro album also includes two very good [...]

Round about the time I was a hipster-wipster slam poet, there was this open mic night that brought out a smattering of locals every Sunday, and the best among us was yet another elle-cee. There was Rapper McRedHead, MC Baldilocks, Rusty Fizzle Televizzle, Ren and Ten, me, and then this woman; this MC who rocked the mic so hard the hairs on the back of your neck would spring forth whole ponytails of life. Magnetic and awe-inspiring, this woman made every man in the room look as lack-luster and underwhelming a group of rappers [...]

Please forgive me if the following lacks the laconic quality of my usual work. I find myself distracted by the fact that Slayer will be unleashing World Painted Blood, their latest paean to all things dark and distasteful, on November 3rd. How excited am I? Let's just say there's a tune called Public Display Of Dismemberment! This is shaping up to be the best Thanksgiving ever at Casa de Luftmensch. The Bottle Rockets - Lean Forward ... I was equally shocked and pleased to discover that [...]

Advances in brain implant technology now allow paralyzed individuals to control a computer mouse or drive a wheelchair. Based on this, I expect it will only be a matter of time until a lazy p.o.s. like myself is able to submit a post solely by mindpower, thereby leaving my hands free to mix cocktails and scratch myself. Until that day, however, you're stuck with 4 You Mighta Missed. The Gary - Chub The first thing I noticed about this Austin trio was that they look like they could quite capably roof a [...]

Since becoming affiliated with MOKB, I'm never more than a day or two from being completely overwhelmed by email. I'll be honest, I get a lot of crap, but I try to make a point of listening to any and all submissions that come directly from musicians. It's not that I have anything against reps; far from it, but my affinity for the underdog naturally draws me to musicians whose passion (or stubbornness) compels them forsake assistance, and slug it out in the music biz unaided. Tonight, [...]

When the first Sweet Relief album was released way back in 1993, the foremost questions in my mind were, "Who the hell is Victoria Williams and how did she get all these folks to cover her tunes." The idea of the tribute album seemed wonderful: use hip and well-known artists as vectors to expose more listeners to under appreciated artists, thereby saving them from eternal "cult" status or, as in the case with both Sweet Relief releases, daunting medical bills. Actually, it was a great idea, and early efforts such [...]
Of the records that will be released this year, Morrissey's Years Of Refusal (available February 17th on Lost Highway ) is high on my list. I have always done a poor job keeping secret my love for all things Mozz. For better or worse, I'm old enough to have laid out hard-earned scratch (by collecting range balls at the local links, if you must know) for Meat Is Murder on vinyl. Following a brief mid-career slump, Morrissey's been on a roll as of late, and [...]

Welcome to the third and final installment of this series All Things Reconsidered , or as it is known around the MOKB watercooler, A Bunch of Albums You Should Check Out Before Chinese Democracy Ruins Your Life. Let's get right to it, because Sunday is approaching quickly. By the way, anyone amused by the fact Chinese Democracy is being released on a Sunday? You think maybe Axl is trying to make some sort of none-too-subtle statement? Based on popular mythology, The Naz arose on a Sunday morning after being entombed for three [...]

I'm thinking that the whole current calendar model is played out with its limiting B.C./A.D. designations. Here's an idea. Let's make 2008 the new Year Zero, which would allow us to reclassify all history as either B.C.D. (Before Chinese Democracy) or A.C.D. (After Chinese Democracy). Like it or not, the clouds are gathering and sites like this are popping up. In the meantime, here are four more recent releases that failed to get their day in the sun because of either the prejudices of others, or my own laziness. Tindersticks - [...]
Slightly more laid-back offering this time, 'Brown Study' is filled with calming spacious strings and deeper than deep basslines. It's also a nod towards some of the older deeprhythms mixes, mainly #20 and #29 . The mix certainly is not as angular as the previous two. All tracks are recent, but timeless. The mood is somewhat meditative, but pulsating basslines and percussion maintain the attention. As for the tracks - I just can't get of Uncle Abner's Blackmoon EP, it's one of the best releases to come out this year, check it out. As for [...]
