Beyond the Regular Rectangular. Buke and Gase, The Lexington.

You know that oh so unmistakable, incomparable feeling of going to a show you're so heavily invested in emotionally, mentally and so too corporeally that you really give not one, but two shits about it? The customary ATP flyer that flights its idiosyncratic way right into the clammy palm as you cross the threshold beneath the strict licensing stipulation; the gratuitously obligatory wait to dwindle on long after then; the overwhelmingly eccentric, and incontestably engaging support? Well, tonight is one of those ones right from arrival. Said support comes in the irrefutably beguiling form of Cosmo Sheldrake [...]

The National – Don’t Swallow The Cap

The National - "Don't Swallow the Cap"
The National are back with another cut off of their upcoming full-length, Trouble Will Find Me . Unlike " Demons ", which had slow, brooding echoes of 20102s High Violet , "Don't Swallow The Cap" is more direct, driving and urgent. The quickened pace of the drums and the desperate tone in Matt Berninger's deep baritone recall the group's Boxer days while quick hits of strings give the tune a frantic, slightly menacing undertone. Brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner are two of the [...]

LA Philharmonic Fetes Brooklyn

Brooklyn Festival (Apr 16-22) Because Brooklyn boosterism is in decline, our friends on the West Coast have decided to the fete the Borough of Kings with a week long music festival in our honor. The Brooklyn Festival will feature such BK based musical luminaries as Sufjan Stevens, Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly, The Antlers and Chairlift , just to name a few. You Ain’t No Picasso’s Favorite Concerts of 2012

#35: The Head and the Heart @ Forecastle [Original Post] I'd heard a song or two by Head and the Heart going into their show at Forecastle, but I'll admit that I was really just seeing them because there wasn't a lot of competition for their time slot at Forecastle. But just like what happens [...]

[anticipation] Sufjan Stevens//Silver & Gold

[anticipation] Sufjan Stevens//Silver & Gold On Nov. 13, Asthmatic Kitty will release  Silver & Gold: Songs for Christmas, Vols. 6-10 , a 5-EP Sufjan Stevens Christmas boxset.  This will come as no surprise to those that know me, but I am absolutely ecstatic for this new boxset.  I LOVE Christmas music and Stevens' 2006 boxset,  Songs for Christmas, Vols. 1-5,  has been in heavy rotation around the holidays every year since. The nearly 60-track collection feature collaborations with Aaron and Bryce Dessner of [...]

You’ve GOT to Hear This: “The National”

You’ve GOT to Hear This: “The National” When asked if I have a favourite band, I am often reluctant to reply with a straight ‘yes’. Having such a passion for music, I naturally enjoy quite a bit of it, and selecting just one is quite tough. Depending on my mood, the top 5 might alter, but there is one band that will always secure itself in the top three: The National. My first exposure to The National was Christmas at my friend’s. Her family has always had great taste, and definitely did not play your typical seasonal tunes. Among the strange and wonderful tracks that hummed its [...]

Pluton - Sufjan Stevens, Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly - Planetarium (Amsterdam) Mon live-report du concert à Pleyel sur DLF

Profile: Victoire

Profile: Victoire When I first heard Victoire , I didn't quite know what I was hearing. It was almost as if I had stepped out of myself and was floating in a world of clouds, strings and eerie calmness. Missy Mazzoli, Olivia De Prato , Eileen Mack , Lorna Krier , Eleonore Oppenheim and Mellissa Hughes make this chamber pop experiment come to life and guide you through every breathless movement. Though my mind was swirling with questions about what I was experiencing, I decided to simply let go and let the music take me [...]

Sufjan Stevens y su versión de Somewhere Over the Rainbow

Sufjan Stevens y su versión de Somewhere Over the Rainbow El músico tocó en un festival en Sydney esta semana y, junto a Bryce Dessner ( The National ) y Nico Muhly , interpretó el famoso tema de  Israel Kamakawiwo Ole' . Mirá el video en esta nota.

Video: Sufjan Stevens covers “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”

Sufjan Stevens - Somewhere Over The Rainbow
Last night, Sufjan Stevens , The National's Bryce Dessner , and Nico Muhly came together once more to perform their Planetarium concert event as part of the Sydney Vivid Festival. The super-trio ended the evening with Stevens' solo rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow", which you can replay below (via Paste ). The minimalist cover features heavily modified vocals (think HAL 9000 using a vocoder), adding a distant, robotic air to the otherwise saccharine number. For more footage from the show, includingperformances [...]

Planetarium (Nico Muhly, Bryce Dessner, Sufjan Stevens) @ Sydney Opera House

Planetarium (Nico Muhly, Bryce Dessner, Sufjan Stevens) @ Sydney Opera House Photo by Daniel Boud Sydney comes alive during VIVID . The Circular Quay area is awash in light and design with various buildings illuminated in dazzling light. The crowds are flocking to this winter wonderland. On the music side Fergus Linehan has curated an eclectic linup featuring the popular and the avantgarde. Last night we went to our first event and it was spectacular. A meeting of three of New York's finest musical talents put on a show that was unique. Firstly we were entertained by the Australian Orava String Quartet. They played a selection [...]

The National contributes to children’s iPad story app

The National contributes to children’s iPad story app The National' s Matt Berninger and Aaron and Bryce Dessner have lent their talents to a new children's iPad story app entitled called Dragon Brush . The brothers Dessner provided the score, while Berninger narrates the story of "Bing-Wen, a young boy who loves to paint. When given a magical brush that makes drawings come to life, Bing-Wen must use his art and wits to outsmart the greedy Emperor," according to a press release. Berninger commented that the epic tale "has all my favorite things: waterfalls, magical dragons, and the sound of my own voice." [...]

Last Saturday I was lucky enough to witness the world premiere... Last Saturday I was lucky enough to witness the world premiere of Planetarium , the song cycle made by Sufjan Stevens, Nico Muhly and Bryce Dessner (of The National), in Eindhoven. They were joined by the New Trombone Collective and the Navarra String Quartet on stage, as if those three on one stage wasn’t amazing enough just yet. I was in complete awe afterwards, as it was quite the experience. Afterwards, I described Planetarium as “The Age of Adz with a touch of Nico Muhly’s magic, and multiply that because of Bryce Dessner” and it [...]
