Colin Medley This here is another of those posts that, were it a category on Jeopardy , would be called "Potpourri" on account of it being a whole lot of this and that with only the passports of the artists mentioned in common. And I'll start with Toronto's METZ because, well, I haven't used one of their photos yet and my posting process is really that random. The trio has been making a lot of noise - literally and figuratively - on the back of their self-titled debut , and while it [...]
Ingram Barss There's been a series of articles The Grid for the past year called Then & Now that has been diligently recording the history of Toronto's musical history by way of its clubs and venues, many of which have been consigned to history regardless of what legendary acts have sweat upon their stages. It's truly fascinating reading - especially if you take the time to look up what sort of pedestrian businesses reside at those addresses today - but it's comforting to know that the [...]
Zuzana Hudackova It's shaping up to be an Autumn of Can-rock double bills high on value. Folks thought that it was a pretty impressive pairing of talent when it was announced last month that Dan Mangan and The Rural Alberta Advantage were teaming up to cross the country in October, or the June announcement that Metric and Stars were hitting the country's arenas together, but that were just the first of a number of impressive double-bills looking to share driving duties across Canada this Fall. This is it, the HOLY GRAIL! After repeatedly saying throughout this journey through the Polaris Prize Long List nominated albums for this year how I would only be moved by one of the many, many ( many ) folk/country, indie/singer-songwriter-y albums on the list, if it was exceptional sounding. And just when I thought that might not happen this year or that just maybe my ears were just not attuned enough to this stuff to recognize the exceptional when I hear it, it finally reveals itself with only three albums left for me to review. Now others may disagree but [...]
Derrick Belcham It figures that the first year that I would have been able to actually attend the long-list unveiling for the Polaris Music Prize , they up and move it from its usual home atop the Drake clear across the country to give Vancouver a taste of what the grand unveiling of the 40 albums selected as the top musical achievements in Canada over the past 12 months is like. But that's alright because as it turns out, this was also the first year that I don't need to make any changes to [...]
Tomorrow night (June 14th, 2012) in Edmonton finds a spectacular line up just up the road from Slowcoustic HQ here in Calgary. The triple threat show is sponsored by CKUA and presented from the good folks at OLD UGLY Recording Co. So let's be clear here, despite not being able to make it to this mid-week show, if you are able to make it out, I can assure you it will be fantastic. Opening the show is hometown troubadour Tyler Butler who's album Winter King was a 'favourite of 20112 and we liked it soo much [...]
Amidst Friday's slightly inclement weather, Bry Webb returned to Toronto to play an intimate Wavelength show with Del Bel at the gorgeous 918 Bathurst Centre . However, this was no mere repeat of his two Music Gallery shows in Februrary ( which we liked a lot ). The venue, formerly a Buddhist temple, added to the show's magic, coming off as half place of revelry, half log cabin getaway. Both sets featured the trademark atmospheric, abstract projections Wavelength often employs, and Sky Blue Sky was on hand with delicious sandwiches to [...]
Frank Yang I'm sure that the timing was just coincidence, but if Friday night's Wavelength show at the Buddhist temple at 918 Bathurst featuring Bry Webb and Del Bel was meant as a last-minute bit of lobbying for my Polaris Prize ballot - long-list voting had opened that day - then I salute them. Well played. Though I've had a year to mull it over, there was very little actually locked down on my list of the top five Canadian "albums of the highest artistic integrity, without regard [...]
Frank Yang Who: Bry Webb and Del Bel What: A bill featuring the creators of two of the strongest local releases of last year. Hey there! You should read this original post on the hill by going here: Polaris Possibilities for 2012 As we get close to June, it means that I've got to start eliminating the pretenders from the contenders for the 2012 Polaris Prize . There are countless records that deserve to be on my ballot and won't get included, and like any subjective vote, there will be adoration showered on records I can't stand. So be it. I try to keep an active list of my "favorite records" but the Polaris mandate asks [...]

Bry Webb's 'Provider' Released in the U.S.
Ex-Constantines frontman Bry Webb brought down the volume considerably on his mostly acoustic solo debut Provider, but still managed to stir up a fair bit of excitement with its Canada-only release in 2011. On October 2nd, Idée Fixe will give U.S. Constantines fans the chance to hear Webb in low-key mode when it releases the album stateside. Long-listed for the 2012 Polaris Prize and praised by PopMatters' Zachary Houle as "a stunning and revealing record...

Bry Webb - Provider
Bry Webb - Former frontman of the late, critically adored Canadian indie band The Constantines headed into the studio with a pair of lap and pedal steel players and a standup bassist to recorded this eerie, quietly intense and compelling debut album...Feist, a friend and admirer, handpicked Webb as a touring partner last year saying "I absolutely admire how unique and connected his playing is. I'd say he's my favorite guitarist I've watched all these years." // Release : Provider (CD: October 2, Idée Fixe; Out Now Digitally) // Sounds like [...]

News: Idée Fixe Records To Release The Constantines' Bry Webb's Debut Solo Album
Idée Fixe Records will release the first solo album from Bry Webb, best known as lead singer of Canadian band The Constantines, on October 2. Provider is a collection of new songs and those that Webb had written over the course of his decade-long musical career. He sought to forge a departure from the rock of The Constantines creating music he calls "eerie, minimal and organic." Primarily live-from-the-floor cuts, the album was recorded in three days at producer Jeff McMurrich's (Owen Pallett, Jennifer Castle, Sandro Perri) Toronto studio. All of the album's nine songs evolved from Webb's songwriting and developed [...]
