Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars Having been a fan of Akron/Family for some time now, it's interesting to see where their music leaves off and Dana Buoy takes over. Summer Bodies is a great bit sunnier in its construction than any of the work he's done with his band up until now. That being said, you can definitely see the lineage between his solo work and his work elsewhere. I wasn't really sure what [...]
Mention the phrases 'beachy guitars' or 'lo-fi electropop' to anybody who's been paying attention to indie buzz bands over the past few years and you're likely to be met with a degree of skepticism. But the pop tunes on this debut album album from Dana Buoy , a.k.a. Akron/Family percussionist Dana Janssen, manage to use a lot of these recently overused sounds in refreshing ways, and the result is a summery album that manages to be fun and easy without being dull or forgettable. An enormous part of Summer Bodies ' appeal is Dana's incredibly [...]
Call an album Summer Bodies and it immediately conjures up a spread of colourful postcard clichés: tanned skin, splashes of sea spray, Beach Boys harmonies, shimmering sunsets. With his solo debut, Dana Buoy (Akron/Family’s Dana Janssen) has concocted just such a glossy picture of sound, but its pleasures are superficial. As opening track The Anatomy of Now draws breath with Buoy’s multi-tracked vocals, shuffling percussion and liquid guitar lines, it feels like we’re going to be in for quite a special ride. The melodies are lovely, the textures sweet, and the whole song feels [...]
Dana Buoy (aka Dana Janssen), the long time drummer for Akron/Family, is releasing his fantastic debut solo album Summer Bodies on Lefse Records May 8th. According to the press materials, this album "started as hopeful love notes left on an answering machine in Oregon were later crafted into an album in a bungalow near a jungle lagoon in Thailand." In truth, the easy, care free beach lifestyle clearly comes through in the music. Summer Bodies feels like a good friend you haven't seen in years who comes to visit for a day to [...]
In this trio of murder sings, we deal with a horse-loving psycho, a mother-loving psycho and a couple of miners for whom three was a crowd. * * * Willie Nelson – The Red-Headed Stranger (1975).mp3 Ah, the follies of the blonde woman! As the song begins, we are told what the “yellow-haired lady” doesn’t know: don’t mess with the red-headed stranger and, whatever you do, don’t try and steal his pony (here we must assume that Nelson [...]
White Flight = Children of the Light Range Life Records has a sweet little gem lying in their repertoire. That little gem goes by the name White Flight , and contains the workings of solo bohemian Justin Roelofs, and electro unique beat makers Ratatat . I posted these guys a while back , and even put their single “Panther” on my BUOY mixtape. I was so pleased to find this in my inbox this weekend, and even more [...]
Ghost Animal = Ginger (Twin Sister cover) reedit Ghost Animal spent many precious hours working on this amazing cover of Twin Sister ’s “Ginger” (the name of GA’s newest guitar waiting for him in LA!) for my mixtape I put out yesterday. Many precious hours that could’ve/should’ve been spent writing one of his three final papers due this week. If that’s not love and dedication I don’t know what is. However, having recorded it in the half lucid state that he was, he just wasn’t satisfied with what [...]
For the month of August, Silly Sundays will be devoted to some tracks written and performed by renaissance man Rupert Holmes ( official wiki AMG ), the only man to win a Tony and an Edgar for the same work. (We'll be hearing a song from that work later this month, methinks.) In 1971, Holmes was writing and recording and producing songs with his friend Ron Dante (of The Archies fame/infamy), and his friends The Buoys ( official wiki interview ). The Buoys were signed for a major label single, [...]
Buoy is Jackson Bennett's debut album. It is self produced, self released, and the price is whatever the buyer wants to pay. I love that, and not just because I can get albums for free. I think offerring an album for whatever the buyer wants to pay is like the artist saying "Look, I would rather you hear my music than make a buck." Of course there are a lot of people who, when given the opportunity, aren't going to pay shit, so if you like Jackson's music I recommend going to his site and throwing him [...]

Summer hits: Dana Buoy, Superchunk, Summer Camp
Every summer needs a playlist. I usually make mine a week or so before Memorial day and update throughout the hot months. For me, the perfect playlist is a mix of power pop, punk, rock, alt country and electronic. My top summer song may be an anthem or a dance track. While it's not required that the word summer actually appears in a song, album or band name to mark the season, there's no shortage of references. Dana Buoy beat almost everyone to the beach this year with the May release of Summer Bodies , a rollicking [...]

I’ve got love in my tummy
I watched the latest episode of Showtime’s Masters of Horror anthology series last night, and what promised to be an interesting premise ended up only confirming that the show has lost its way and whatever uneven charm the first season of the show promised. There have been a couple decent episodes this season. John Landis did a fine job with the darkly comic serial killer story, “Family,” and Joe Dante’s “The Screwfly Solution” was a interesting failure buoyed by the strength of its disturbing premise, a mysterious plague that induces violent behavior towards women. It also [...]
