mp3: Nihiti - Pinko Morning Nihiti are probably one of the most mysterious and compelling bands working in New York right now. In the short time from their sprawling and epic ambient debut LP Other People's Memories to the stripped down elegance of recent ep Faced With Splendor , Nihiti have shown a unique diversity within their dark world of sonic landscapes. We thrilled and honored to have these guys at our first of three CMJ shows this week, Wednesday at Tandem Bar, Bushwick. The [...]
mp3: Spanish Prisoners - RICH BLOOD mp3: Spanish Prisoners - RICH BLOOD (Tropic of Pisces Remix) Spanish Prisoners are a Bushwick based band who have been gathering an impressive amount of buzz surrounding their forthcoming album Gold Fools . Their second single from the LP is "Rich Blood", which just got this smooth remix from Tropic of Pisces (formerly Von China and guitarist from Oberhofer). The band describes the reworking as "a slice of fluid, mutant Steely Dan-lite, ready for [...]
[Photos by acidjack] XVSK is the dynamic duo of Trevor Exter and John Morgan Kimock, and they turn the whole au courant notion of the noisy garage rock duo completely on its head. Lots of bands use the stripped-down format to excuse sloppy, thin songs; Exter and Kimock manage to pump out fully realized blues-rock tunes that could shame a band twice their size. They achieve it in part by being very good at what they do, and their pedigree has probably contributed to their current skill level. Kimock is the son of [...]
[Photos by acidjack] Family Band are a salve to a nerve-frayed city where everybody climbs their steps two at a time. Indeed, the Brooklyn back yard where the latest Backyard Brunch Sessions was held could as well have been miles from the city; in the presence of Family Band, we were transfixed, and transported. The components of the band's sound are vocalist/guitarist Kim Krans, whose dusky, haunting vocals give the songs their emotional core; her husband, guitarist/pedal bassist Jonny Ollsin, and Scott Hirsch, on pedal steel. If you noticed that [...]
[Video still by Cannons ] I invited Bushwick's U Say USA to play our first annual NYCTaper Northside Showcase without having actually seen their live show, but on the strength of some very positive word of mouth. Though the term "Bushwick band" might conjure the thought of an experimental keyboard project, U Say USA use their neighborhood (prominently featured on the cover of their record, The Greatest Recession (I've Ever Been To) ) as the jumping off point for their songwriting, which deals with populist themes appropriate to the current moment, [...]
[Photos by acidjack] Before heading over to McCarren Park a few Saturdays ago to catch Guided By Voices and others on the Northside Festival main stage, I had the privilege of catching the inaugural show of the 2011 Backyard Brunch Sessions , starring Lafayette, LA's Givers . With their good attitudes and laid back vibe, I liked this band before hearing a note of their music. Having recently signed to Glassnote Records for the release of their debut album, In Light , the band are enjoying [...]
-photo by Matthew Caron mp3: Ana Lola Roman - Klutch I first discovered Ana Lola Roman when she did a guest spot at Selective Tuesdays , our weekly DJ collective in Bushwick at Tandem Bar . A few months later, she has an impressive debut single in the form of "Klutch", a tribal synth track that harkens to the experimental early days of groundbreaking artists like Anne Clark, Laurie Anderson, and Kate Bush. Not to say what Roman is doing here isn't fresh [...]
Strange Shapes - "Where We Want to Be" Hear more music below What is it to be punctual? It takes certain awareness to recognize appropriate cues, or timing. When it comes to music, being "punctual," I would say, would be aligned with a distinction in pace. It's something best illustrated in the dialogue between instruments – how a beat defines the rhythm of guitar, which in turn defines the placement of a vocal melody. There's an obvious difference between an aggressively-strummed chord progression racing neck-in-neck [...]
Any news from The XX camp is good news. In this case it's in the form of a collaboration by XX member Romy Madley Croft with Brooklyn house duo CREEP . CREEP is comprised of (sometimes Fischerspooner collaborator) Lauren Flax and Lauren Dillard. The duo is set to release the single "Days" on January 25th via Young Turks . "Days" exists on a distinctly ghostly, gothic landscape complimented nicely by Romys smooth vocals.. It is the type of song that would soundtrack a student produced horror film in a loft in Bushwick using ketchup [...]
What could top rumored news that The Beatles would play the Hollywood Bowl with holograms? How about Neutral Milk Hotel returning. Jeff Mangum, the reclusive creative force that recorded two albums under the moniker Neutral Milk Hotel in the nineties, performed at a Buchwick loft on Saturday night for a lucky seventy-five people. His set consisted of ten songs from his back catalog, performed solo. This is his second performance of the year, the first being a benefit for Chris Know. Though this is a giant step in the right direction, a Pitchfork interview with Ben [...]
It's officially December and I look out my window this morning and it's snowing. Whether you love or hate the white stuff, it sure helps remind you that it's winter time. Tonight in Covington , a couple great touring bands aim to 'warm up' the city with a great live show. It's at the Mad Hatter and features Darker My Love and Delta Spirit . Both bands have headlined tours on their own, but they come together for this excellent bill. In case you are on the fence, watch [...]

DO IT YOURSELF *Episode 4* LIGHTS OUT @ MARKET HOTEL
still photo & edit by joe perez / shot by muggsy and koster We're up to episode 4 in our ' Do It Yourself ' vodcast series and we're going doco with a portrait of Market Hotel during its infamous "shut down" in February 2010. During a private shoot with QC last year, members of the bands Real Estate and These Are Powers along with Market Hotel pioneers, broke down the venue and its importance in the Brooklyn music community. Market Hotel served as a birthright [...]

You should already know that just by reading that post title that this gallery is full of faded dudes and girls typically in the range of 18 - 23 years of age drinking too many Four Lokos and smoking too many cigarettes. If not, well, read that last sentence again. Kids get super crazy at [...]
DO IT YOURSELF *Episode 3* WILDBIRDS & PEACEDRUMS
edited by muggsy Part 3 of Quiet Color's ' Do It Yourself ' video series takes us to Bushwick, Brooklyn and the living room/art gallery/Brooklyn D.I.Y. venue Fort Useless . It was a cold and gray day in NYC when we met with husband and wife Andreas Werliin and Mariam Wallentin, more aptly known as the Swedish indie duo Wildbirds and Peacedrums . What would follow was an intimate and resplendant performance that transformed Fort Useless into a warm winter sanctum. Quiet Color is blessed to have captured this private [...]
Photos: Nightspitter & Murdertronics birthday party at 13 Thames on January 15
So we sent our dear photo intern Belle Z. over to Bushwick for this wild night party full of B.Y.O.B. shenanigans, live music, DJ sets and crazy-ass kids more akin to her style than ours (honestly) and when we took a look at the photographs, we had to ask what the hell was going on. [...]
