You should pay attention to WOVEN RECORDS , a label based here in Winnipeg and Montreal. Over the past six months or so they've released a handful of releases that stare benality in the face and smack it about. The first here is the standout - a totally unexpected pair of tunes from BEAUCHAMP . Having been to his events since 2005 I'd crown this Winnipeg native as the indie dance / nu disco king. He's had his hands in nearly every event [...]

But it's not just music critics and bloggers tallying up the records that rocked 2011, Cadence Weapon is also taking stock of the releases that moved him this year -- and he's not pulling any punches when it comes to albums that fall flat either. So whose record failed to make the [...]

I'm currently obsessing about the Cadence Weapon remix of Crystal Ball by Grimes . This glorious discofied version makes the song that more much danceable and I ' m pretty sure it is gonna put you in a very good mood this evening! The mesmerizing original is one of my most played songs over the last few months. It is taken from her split side EP DarkBloom with D'eon which [...]

Woven Records commissioned Canadia n rap/poet legend Cadence Weapon to pick and remix parts of Tim Hoover's upcoming instrumental album, More Napkins . The outcome is a dark quasi-dancefloor friendly drum filled romp. Quite stunning to be honest. The remix EP will be available for purchase in September sometime and will include a yet to be heard D'Eon remix (can't wait to hear that one too). Check out Cadence's mix bellow! Tim Hoover - More Napkins (Cadence Weapon Super Computer [...]

Toronto - We here at the Panic Manual are mostly Canadians, with a few randoms thrown in. So in honor of Canada Day, here is a tribute in images, since we are still too lazy to compile a proper list. [...]

This always seems to be a hotly contested topic if you are a folk music fan and live in Alberta. Which summer folk festival do I commit to? I have heard arguments for both sides in regards to superior venues, better backdrops and acoustics, etc. When I look at a potential music festival it still comes down to the line-up. The majority of performers have been announced for both of Alberta's bigger folk fests so the final decision will come down to your own personal tastes. I've already made my mind up...but here would be some of my highlights if [...]

Anneke Hymmen Montrealer Mike Feuerstack isn't anything resembling a household name but if you've got records from Belle Orchestre , Angela Desveaux or The Wooden Stars in your collection - and you probably should - then you've got his name in your liner notes. But if not, then you probably don't have anything from his solo project Snailhouse and that's a shame - but one you can easily rectify with his new album Sentimental Gentleman when it's released on May 24. In [...]

No, it is not Saturday, which is the day that these remix-related What's This, A Party? posts get posted. But I'm putting this one up on a Sunday for a couple reasons. It's going up today mainly because I meant to put it up yesterday, but we spent Friday night being properly wowed by the full-band sounds of Mr. Dan Mangan at the Seahorse, and so I had no time to prepare it. Also, tomorrow is a holiday for a number of folks, and so I'm sure those folks might appreciate some par-tay jams for this evening. [...]
So here it is - the first of a series of posts about Canadian Music Week 2011. One of the first sets I caught during the 5 day festival was Cadence Weapon at The Opera House on March 10. I have heard a lot of buzz about Cadence Weapon, but I never got around to checking out his work. Hailing from Edmonton, Alberta, Cadence Weapon has been busy thede past couple of years keeping up with his duties as Edmonton's poet laureate and working on the mix-tape for Tron Legacy (2010). Well-versed in the art of hip hop, Cadence Weapon debuted [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive Upper Class Recordings At last year's Canadian Music Week , rapper Cadence Weapon sent shockwaves through Toronto when he debuted a full rock band. On Thursday night, Cadence Weapon, aka Roland Pemberton, used his CBC Radio 3/Sirius/Billions CMW showcase with DJ Tim Hoover and drummer Phillip Karneef to play up the rock vibe but with a decidedly hip-hop twist. "This [...]

Someone recently referred to us as "get off my lawn/rap grandpa's" or some such, and to be honest, I have no issue with that characterization. In fact I'll wear that label proudly, and if need be I'll rock some suspenders to keep my Cross Colors jeans hitched up to mid-chest level. I'll never stop re-visiting, and/or proclaiming my fondness for the hip hop of the late 802s and early 902s that I love so much, but I certainly hope I don't come across as someone who dislikes current hip hop. So, while [...]
