First, they hit Cake Shop on Friday (5/3) for a show with The Laurels and Far Out Fangtooth . The more gothy post-punk direction of Wax Idols' very good new LP, Discipline + Desire [...]

batteryboy is an indie folk group that was once just a one man show featuring Cobey Rouse. Over time it has grown into a trio that includes Shannon Frid of Cloud Cult and Eric Carranza of Better Bones . Their sound is a soothing and relaxing one, perfect for those calm, contemplative moments. Rouse's guitar picking is accented by Frid's violin perfectly, all providing the backdrop for beautiful vocal harmonies. Throw Carranza's keys and guitar work into the mix and you've got yourself some nearly perfect tunes to just sit back and relax to. Their [...]

photos by PSquared Photography ; words by Bill Pearis Warm Soda @ Cake Shop, 3/28/2013 Bay Area power pop crunchers Warm Soda buzzed into NYC last night (3/28), ripping up Cake Shop to an excited crowd. Part of the appeal of the band's terrific debut album is the production which turns anything you listen to it on into a '70s AM radio. (The great songs are the main attraction, of course.) Live, [...]

by Andrew Sacher Paws at Cake Shop - 3/6/13 (via BrooklynVegan Instagram ) Scottish trio PAWS brought their raucous pop punk to the US this week, having touched down in NYC for shows at Glasslands on Tuesday (3/5) and Cake Shop last night (3/6). I caught their set in the low-ceiling, dimly lit basement of Cake Shop last night and they're just as upbeat and energetic at their shows as [...]

photos by Dominick Mastrangelo ; words by Bill Pearis Philip Ekström @ Cake Shop, 2/20/2013 As mentioned , Sweden's The Mary Onettes will release their new album, Hit the Waves , on March 12 via Labrador. The record is miles away from the driving, Cure-ish post-punk the band were known for in the past, and the new album sports a boyant, synth-heavy sound. This could be due in part to working with Studio's [...]

If you're lucky you can catch Nashville's Torres at one of five dates over the next week, as she's on tour - rather brilliantly titled, "Torres: The Tourres" . She's even better at writing songs than puns (no, really), so you're definitely not going to want to miss out. And since she's backed by a full band when live, it's going to take the already emotionally-devastating experience of listening to "Honey" to a whole new level. I'm seriously considering booking flights to the States right now to catch her, [...]

Recommended Show: MONDAY, FEBRUARY 11, 2013 BLEEDING RAINBOW @ CAKE SHOP 152 Ludlow St New York, NY 10002 $8, 8PM It was a tough call picking between Bleeding Rainbow at Cake Shop and Matmos at Le Poisson Rouge. We ultimately decided on the former and put our small amount of weight behind the up-and-comer instead of the well-established. Last October, the skinny tie wearing rock and rollers here at the TVD HQ office were rabidly awaiting Power Popalicious II, the weekend long celebration of Power Pop curated by the King of Power Pop, Mr. Paul Collins, that was to be held at the Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park, NJ. Well, a storm named Sandy had some other plans for the area, and PPII was cancelled in the wake of the destruction that hit the Jersey Shore and beyond. But proof that you can't keep a movement and a ringing Rick' down, [...]

[Photos courtesy of MaryAnne Ventrice ] The documented connection between Port St. Willow frontman Nick Principe and childhood friend Peter Silbermann of The Antlers goes beyond their shared background. Both have a grandiosity and mournfulness to their sounds; both share a similar vocal style - a soaring falsetto that is its own instrument, at times obscuring the lyrics themselves. But where The Antlers lean more toward narrative storytelling and show a continued passion for rock dynamics, Principe is more comfortable in the realm of more obtuse, atmospheric composition. The songs on his debut record, [...]
[Photos by Jill Harrison at For the Love of Brooklyn ] As Hurricane Sandy's damage continues to be assessed here on the East Coast, it seems grimly appropriate to highlight the CMJ performance of an outstanding New Orleans-based band that represents that city's history as well as its brightening future. Hurray For the Riff Raff have been favorites of this site for a while now, and we did everything we could - including picking them up from the airport - to make it possible for them to play our unofficial CMJ day show at [...]
[Photos by acidjack] Hans Chew plays a brand of old-time, piano-driven rock n' roll you may not have even realized you were nostalgic for. As the piano man for Brooklyn country-psych stalwarts D. Charles Speer & the Helix, Chew proved himself as a composer and vocalist in his own right on his debut album Tennessee & Other Stories . Imbued with a honky-tonk barroom quality, Chew's piano playing is even more central to his solo project than it is to his work with Speer, and that's all to the good. As a Southerner now [...]
[Photo courtesy of MaryAnne Ventrice ] At first, it's hard to grasp that the women of Heliotropes are your showcase's heaviest band by far. From looking at them, you might not guess that the diverse group of young women makes monster, Sabbath-inspired rock with chunky, wah wah riffs and a raging backbeat. Also one of the newest acts on our CMJ day show bill, these ladies are kindred spirits of modern stoner/psych rockers like The Midnight Ghost Train, Pontiak and others, and they don't hold back onstage. For a band whose current output consists of [...]
