Camden Crawl Dublin – Tieranniesaur

It doesn’t feel like Tieranniesaur have checked out of the party completely, it just feels like they went to the off-licence and never came back, probably charming another room full of sweaty revellers with their incessant melody pop and forgetting that we’re all still waiting. Thankfully they’ve found their way back, two years down the road and we’ve all changed a bit. Gone is the direct pop-mallet smashing of the debut to be replaced by a more thoughtful, considered affair. Don’t worry though, DIYSCO is not a deflated balloon or an over-flowing ashtray of an album, [...]

Luke’s Alphabet Tour – J: The James Cleaver Quintet at London Koko – 6th May 2012

In the early-afternoon May-time drizzle, the numerous Camden Crawlers are seeking shelter at various pubs and clubs. Some choose a pub to watch the footy, some dive into Burger King but 100-or-so people stroll into Koko for a much-needed dose of angst and adrenaline. Although Camden Crawl isn't known for its heavy side, XFM is doing its bit to educate the masses with the skinny jeans wearing noiseniks the James Cleaver Quintet. Merging the anthemic punk rock sounds of Fucked Up with the metalcore stylings of The [...]

Camden Crawl 2012: Day 2 – Ben’s Roundup

There’s something unnerving about turning up to day two of any festival showered, with clean pants on and without the obligatory dried coating of mud. It lacks a sense of escapism, but such is the nature of the modern urban festival scene. Camden Crawl 2012 has so far proved itself to be far removed from these trappings and with today’s line up holding just as much promise as Saturday’s, alongside the odd wild card, it’s time to knock back the last of the Alka-seltzer and hop on the Northern Line for 13 more hours of sound, kicking off [...]

Camden Crawl 2012: Day 2 – Luke’s Roundup

It's a much slower, hazier start in NW1 today – very much the morning after the night before. But as hard as the hangover may be, London gig-goers crawl on regardless. Sunday starts slightly later than the festivities taking place yesterday, but there's still a wealth of new acts to discover without letting the on/off showers dampen spirits. Yet again draught is being poured and shots slammed at the Wheelbarrow as the alternative rockers Tall Ships (pictured at top) take to the stage. There's a certain buzz in the air as the [...]

Camden Crawl 2012: Day 1 – Ben’s Roundup

Music is so deeply hewn in to the tapestry of Camden’s past that even if a rogue bulldozer were to somehow escape the Olympic park and flatten the lot, the Camden faithful would still gather on the detritus (like Kevin Costner in the film Field of Dreams) to watch the ghostly echo of gigs passed. Camden Crawl has managed to do away with wrestling the country/city festival debate that plagues the likes of Hard Rock Calling and SW4 – those who assume the hardware set up should remain universal – by setting up in the across the attics, backrooms [...]

Camden Crawl 2012 Interview: Danny Fury and Sam Ray from Antlered Man

After the release of their debut album and successful European tour, London proto-rockers Antlered Man are gearing up for festival season with a performance at this year's Camden Crawl. I caught up with Danny Fury (guitar) and Sam Ray (bass) for a chat about Camden, UK music and masturbation. The last time TGTF saw you guys was supporting Lower Than Atlantis ... Danny: Yeah, that gig was tough for me. As soon as we got to sound-check, the sound guy wanted a bit of vocals from [...]

Camden Crawl 2012: Day 1 – Luke’s Roundup

Camden has always been known for music. From the hallowed venues of The Underworld and Electric Ballroom, to the local legend of Amy Winehouse , music has been the beating heart of the Town for years. To celebrate this heritage, the concept of Camden Crawl was produced. Now in its eleventh year, the annual 2-day festival has invaded no less than 27 venues hosting over 100 artists for 16 hours a day. It's hectic, intense, and eye-opening; what else would you expect? Kicking off the Saturday are the London-bred purveyors of [...]

Camden Crawl 2012 // The 405 Review

Camden Crawl 2012 // The 405 Review Photography by Tim Boddy I was somewhere in the midst of Camden, on the edge of a lock, when the rum began to take hold. I remember saying something like "I feel a bit lightheaded, maybe we should go and see some folk music…" and suddenly there was a terrible roar all around and a wall of noise, swooping and screeching and diving, was blaring forth a nightmare post-punk ruckus. And a voice was screaming, "Holy Jesus! Who are these goddamn animals?" [...]

Camden Crawl Interview: Axis Of

Having started from growling, embittered hardcore routes, north-coast rockers Axis Of scored their biggest hit yet when they took a mellower angle with the anthemic ‘Port Na Spaniagh’ . Since, they’ve established themselves as one of the leading lights of a magnificent Northern Irish rock scene. Trust us, having the brother of ASIWYFA star Rory Frier’s in the band has little to do with that success. Apart from rock running in the family, of course. Vocalist Niall Lawlor tell us the story so far… Some folks down south won't have heard your brand [...]

The best bands at Camden Crawl London 2012

As we're sure you're aware, tomorrow sees the start of the Camden Crawl Dublin festival across the city. Last, weekend, however, saw the original Camden event take place over three days in 45 venues. State's London team was out and about and here's their pick of what was on offer... And So I Watch You From Afar (The Electric Ballroom) It takes a band with considerable presence to impact the vast cavern that is the Electric Ballroom, but of course ASIWYFA is that band. Any worries about [...]

The Camden Crawl 2012: The Review

The Camden Crawl 2012: The Review By Nick Levine ( @nicklevine ) When planning the itinerary for last weekend’s festival of music and culture, it is surprising that despite being a resident of Camden, I have not heard of a number of participating venues taking place at the Crawl. The journey on Saturday starts late in the afternoon at the Electric Ballroom to see Denmark’s The Rumour Said Fire . Playing to a sparse but gradually filling up room, the band zip through songs from their debut album The Arrogant . Vocalist Søren Lilholt [...]
