Tweet As the story goes, when Frànçois Marry arrived in Bristol, England from France in 2003, he wrote a note accompanied by a picture asking for people to make music together with, taped it in his window, then proceeded to check out local car boot sales for instruments. Starting out with a hodgepodge of found instruments (including a keyboard he played with his foot), Frànçois began playing live in Bristol in early 2004. 2005 - 2007 saw him collaborating with various local [...]

S2D We don't normally publicise DJ nights but we'll make an exception with this one, as we'd go if we weren't all cockney oiks who suffer vertigo north of Watford... On Friday 24th February, London's indiepop/post-punk hosts, Scared to Dance ventures north to Glasgow for a special night where Tracyanne Campbell from Camera Obscura hits the DJ decks. Full details: Date: Friday 24th February, 9pm-3am [...]

Tweet vaso link As we usher in the new year, I find myself listening to some of my most loved records from years past that I forced myself to stop listening to after playing them out to death. Every year I perpetuate the seemingly unjust habit of deleting all the music on my computer and settling into a new year with fresh sounds. This is certainly a shame for all the records I skipped over or paid little enough attention to, but I always [...]
For many people, 2012 arrives with much uncertainty. But one thing we can pretty much always look forward to is music. There will be great music that gets a lot of buzz, and other terrific music that, for the most part, flies under the radar. There will be the predictable hype of new albums by [...] Read more, get songs or stream the entire mix on Indie Rock Cafe

Stuarto Glasser, host of the All Around the World Music Show, called me up a little after 5pm Friday and asked if I could fill in for him. Thinking it would be a great way to attract a few more listeners I agreed. I headed home and put together a playlist of some of my favorite indie artists from around the world. The first half of the list below aired as the split show: The Indie Music Show from All Around the World. I began with some lovable indie [...]

Pine trees and icicles and carolers - check. But can we please just talk for a moment about how it was -2 degrees the other night in Colorado? TWO BELOW, with howling winds. I like the beer , but man alive that makes for some cold sleeping. All the golden loveliness of autumn is gone, and in its place we have this icy, silent cocoon all around us, luminescent and silvery-blue. Perhaps I just have to survive these next two weeks of school, and maybe go on a little cookie-baking binge, and [...]

Camera Obscura : The Blizzard [ purchase ] Raveonettes : The Christmas Song [ purchase ] One of my longest playlists is my Christmas list. If it's a Christmas song, I want it. I don't care if it's good, bad or someplace in between. I simply enjoy the music of the season. I don't remember hearing either of these two in a mall but I did learn of them both on TV in commercials so if [...]

STV have come in for some massively unfair stick in the past, but they have come back fighting this week with one of the funniest pieces I've seen in ages. This week they published a list of nominations for the best Scottish songs of the noughties, to be voted for by viewers, with the intention of eventually whittling the numbers down to select 'Scotland's Greatest Ever Album'. And it is hilarious . The list of nominated songs for the last ten years or so is absolutely brilliant. I can't tell if it's the best satire [...]
Frightened Rabbit are offering up a 3-track self-titled EP for free. Get it here. The EP will be available in limited quantities on vinyl from their label Fat Cat on the 31st of October. One of my favourite female voices in music today, Traceyanne Campbell of Camera Obscura is a guest vocalist on the song 'Fuck This Place', which is a fab, harmonious cacophony (you have to hear it to understand this comment). If you want to read more on what Scott Hutchison has to say about each track, [...]

It's always nice to get a surprise announcement about a free EP from one of your favorite bands so that's what we have for you today. This 3-track EP features "Scottish Wind" which Scott and brother Grant performed and acoustic version of at RoskNess earlier this year while the other two tracks feature some guest vocalists in Camera Obscura frontwoman Tracyanne Campbell and Scottish music legend Archie Fisher. If for some reason you are reluctant to provide your email address to the band in return for this EP you can preview it over at [...]

Frightened Rabbit released what was once a tour-only EP into the wild today as a free download for subscribers to their mailing list . Dubbed simply A Frightened Rabbit EP , the 3-track set includes collaborations with fellow Scots Tracyanne Campbell of Camera Obscura (on a new tune we first heard over the summer) and folk veteran Archie Fisher, who duets with Scott Hutchison on "The Work." A studio version of recent live favorite "Scottish Winds" also made the cut. You can download all three MP3s by signing up here [...]

There's no shortage of terrible covers out there, and the vast majority of them usually fall into one of two categories: Overly faithful and vastly inferior to the original and totally pointless, making you just want to hear the original Overly experimental, wrecking the original, and just as pointless as the first kind of bad cover A good cover finds makes the original great and casts it in a new light. It makes you notice that that disco song had a really great melody, that the original was a little [...]

Ever since this May's Paul Simon cover songs collection, a follow-up starring Bruce Springsteen — a figure similarly oft-cited as inspiration to our favorite indie acts — has been in the works. The hard part, though, has been that there are dozens of versions of the Boss floating around, some brilliant and others falling a bit short despite showing plenty of reverence for their hero. Given Frightened Rabbit's recent tribute to the blue-collar icon and Kurt Vile's forthcoming studio take on "Downbound Train," now feels like a good time to compile the best or [...]
Click image for more artist information Sounds like: Summer Camp, Camera Obscura, Tilly and the Wall, Hot Club de Paris "Slow Club - Where I'm Waking" What's so good? I recently drove a 1,464 mile round-trip to Salt Lake City. My beagle copilot still hasn't mastered the art of conversation, so I loaded my iPod with a bunch of new music. I found myself listening [...]
