Canada Day is much more than our country's birthday. For as long as I can remember, it has been a great excuse to get out and enjoy some of the outstanding music emanating from the "Great White North." It seems like every city and town across Canada has a festival going on that you'd kill to be at; there are way too many to list, but it would appear that even newlyweds Will and Kate would agree with this. After all, they took in the annual extravaganza on Parliament Hill in Ottawa as [...]

After Chad's set, I decided to stay for this one. I was surprised to see Laura Barrett there. Since I didn't get to see to full National Parks Projects show with alot of musicians who contributed for this project. They showed some previews from what you would see on the Discovery Channel . Laura Barrett did one song under the Yurt. Here are the rest of the photos. [...]

Since I didn't get to see Chad VanGaalen play the main stage on Canada Day at Jacques-Cartier Park at around 6pm. Found out that he was going to do a short acoustic session in a Yurt around 4:45pm. It was a great short amazing set called "The Art of Chad VanGaalen". At least it wasn't as packed and crazy when I saw him at NXNE. It was more of a great intimate set. Chad wore a Garfield t-shirt that had Canada on it [...]

After Two Hours Traffic , the next band to be up was Monogrenade from Montreal. I finally got to see this band play live. Since Jean-Michel Pigeon used to play in Winter Gloves . They played a wonderful set despite not understanding what they sang in French. But the music was lovely, it was a mix of indie pop rock with some orchestral and experimental sound. Think of a mix of Malajube, Karkwa, Patrick Watson and Cinematic Orchestra. [...]
Filed under: Concerts and Tours , News , Exclusive Courtesy of the Tragically Hip Whether they like it or not, the Tragically Hip are Canada's band. More precisely, for many national rock and roll fans, the Hip are Canada. In a country with few strong symbols on which to hang its identity, citizens tend to proselytize pop cultural signifiers into emblems of national consciousness: hockey, the coffee chain Tim Hortons and CanRock. [...]

At Jacques-Cartier Park in Gatineau/Ottawa on Canada. The first show to start of was Two Hours Traffic . I haven't seen them live in awhile. They did a great set filled with their popular songs. There was no new material on the set but it was great to hear them live. Here is what they sang. Here are the rest of the photos. [...]

This is where I spent my Canada Day this year. I went up to Jacques-Cartier Park for this great Songwriter's Circle by CBC Radio . The Canada Day Maple Sugar Song Circle was broadcast live. This year the singers featured were: Daniela Gesundheit ( Snowblink ) Graham Van Pelt ( Miracle Fortress ) Liam Corcoran & Alec O'Hanley ( Two Hours Traffic ) [...]

It's Canada Day today. The older I get, the more often I consider Canada and think, yeah, now that seems like a country that has its act together. There's football and rock bands and rivers and streams of pure maple syrup. Paloma and I were watching episodes of The Kids In The Hall last week when she suggested we move to the land that gave us Bruce McCulloch. "I don't think that they want us." Not that we're trouble. We're quiet, well-behaved and have both seen [...]
Hello? Is this thing on? Rocks Off has a feeling that a lot of folks are nowhere near their computers today. Must be some sort of holiday. It is, actually. Today, not Monday. It's Canada Day, or ... Continue reading "Canada Day: Top 10 Artists From Way Up Yonder" >

While most of us live in the United States these days, Punknews.org was born and raised in Canada so here is a short bunch of videos from a few of our finest exports in hono(u)r of Canada Day . It's just a quick mixtape of some of the bands that came to mind when we thought of Canada, but please forgive us if we left a band you love out; that's why we have a comments section.

As previously mentioned , Joe's Pub is closing for renovations. Tonight, 7/1, is the final night of the club as we know it now, and they'll be hosting Canada Day bashes "featuring the Great Canadian Songbook" at both 6:30 and 9:00 pm ... produced and emcee'd by Jeff Breithaupt and featuring a stellar international line-up, including Tyley Ross (East Village Opera Company, The Who's Tommy), Greg Naughton (The Sweet Remains), singer-songwriters Jamie Leonhart, Joe Hurley, Anthony da Costa, and Kate Schutt, cabaret spitfire Shelley McPherson, Tony Salvatore (BETTY, Pleasuredog), Shannon Connolly [...]
Happy 144th, CANADA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Finally, our favorite weekend of the summer has arrived! Canada Day weekend is the time when we Canucks escape real life to enjoy the finer things about our country: beaches, babes, beers and beautiful weather. The weekend may be magical, but with it comes the unnecessary stress of playlist construction. Well relax friends, we here at SS have your back. Why not kick off the unofficial start of Summer with our pair of carefully produced mixtapes? Kat knows her daytime music better than anyone else I know. Daytime Delight was built with the sole purpose of accompanying you during your sun-soaked afternoons [...]
Canada Day is just around the corner. That means beer, cottages, barbecues, and fireworks. You need a soundtrack for that, and I've updated my annual Canada Day playlist just for you. Classics from Neil Young, The Tragically Hip, and other expected artists are there. I've got some new entries for you this year as well, among them are Said The Whale's stellar "Out on the Shield" and Shawn
Well this week we get to celebrate Canada's birthday. Happy birthday Big Guy, you've never looked better. There's plenty going on and here are my picks: Toronto International Jazz Festival This year's version runs until July 3rd. You can still catch performances by the likes of Robert Cray Band, Los Lonely Boys, Count Basie Orchestra, Branford Marsalis, Bela Fleck, The Roots, Shad, and Bootsy

If I were ever not going to spend Canada Day in this country, I'd head to London. Every year, there's a ton of Canada programming that takes place and this year, the event promises to be the best yet. In addition to the Canada Day event taking place in Trafalgar Square this year ( Blue Rodeo headlining a show with Polaris winners Karkwa and others), The Barbican Centre will be presenting Canadian Blast (as part of the Blaze Summer Concert Series) featuring The Hidden Cameras , Woodpigeon and Devon Sproule [...]

Seems as if I'm still dealing with technical problems on indie music filter. Â You'll notice a hell of a bunch of my posts include weird characters (ie. a question mark in a black diamond), which I think I know how to fix. Â Also, last weeks issues made my twitter feed go nuts. Â Sorry if it looked like I was being overly keen on new music, I didn't mean to clog anyone's stream. Â In the meantime, here's a whack of different things I'm into online. -As part of Giant System Chicago , here's a band called Golden [...]
