Lot's of great Canadian acts will be releasing new music in 2012. So I figured what better way to celebrate than to compile a playlist of those artists. These aren't necessarily all songs that will appear on the new albums, that would be too much work, but they are enjoyable nonetheless. Listen here .

wow it's been a long time since my last update. there are so many good tunes i want to share and have been meaning to make a mixtape but for now...some tunes that will definitely keep you warm and lift your soul in the winter. these are tracks that i've been repeating NONSTOP for the past little while. some MONTREAL representation too with JACQUES GREENE . watch out for him, he is going to be big. he's already done remixes of radiohead and the weeknd which are super dope. NEON INDIAN 's new LP is a fantastic listen, [...]

Though it falls on Columbus Day, Canadian Thanksgiving Day seems relatively untainted by the parallel history of white privilege and savagery which have come to typify the two American holidays with which it shares either date or name. Rather, though giving thanks in the territories is still partially grounded in the European exploration of territories and provinces, Thanksgiving Day in Canada was originally established as a harvest holiday, pure and simple, first as a natural extension of the human need to celebrate the cornucopia, and subsequently by proclamation, in 1957. My connection to Canadian Thanksgiving is familial: [...]

Nobody in their right mind would question the overall quality of Canadian music, but if you're one of those few with the wrong mind, here's a sampler to get you on the right track. The occasion is of course Liverpool Sound City - 19th, 20th, 21st May 2011. The excellent sampler comes courtesy of Canadian Blast, an Initiative of the Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA). Canadian Blast present showcases for Canadian artists around the world in all genres, helping artists to expand [...]

It's turning into a busy year for Canadian Blast. Having already showcased at Camden Crawl and presented a handful of shows in London and Berlin, they will once again head down to Brighton for The Great Escape this year. As in previous years, they will be hosting a showcase of some of the finest Canadian talent at the festival. This year they takeover Upstairs at The Komedia during the day with a show featuring Braids, Young Empires, Hey Rosetta, Woodhands and Said The Whale. If you are heading down to the Great Escape (and even if you aren't), [...]

First and foremost I must thank Mr. J. Medeiros for joining us last month, I think we can all agree that his Chronicles where very insightfull and entertaining. We look forward to continue working and help him push his new album release. ( Listen to his first single ) Next month we will have the highly original and super talented Moka Only , joining us for the Chronicles. This Canadian artist has been in the underground [...]

Its only been about a year when I heard of Hamilton, Ontario's Matt Paxton . All I know is that he is busy with the new album whenever it sees the light of day. Just found out that he dropped a new single on his Bandcamp site on February 8th. The song is called 500 Miles (Traditional). The song was known as "500 Miles Away from Home" or "Railroaders' Lament" and is a folk song made popular in the United States & Europe during the [...]

Why didn't those of you with multiple spawn warn me that having two kids was four times as much work as having one kid?* I might have taken action - a vow of abstinence after Boy Z was born or something. My Spring Break thus far has been a battle. A battle with Not Max over sleep. A battle with Boy Z over appropriate and inappropriate targets for hurled objects. A battle with Dr. O'C to keep from biting off each other's head. I'm pretty sure I'm losing most of these battles right now. Not Max [...]

Boy Z has been swimming since he was about four months old. By swimming I don't mean the 200m butterfly, of course, but various water baby classes both in Oxford and here in Adelaide. They allow the kids to get comfortable in the water and teach basic safety, something that we felt was important for kids growing up in Australia. For most of that time, he has loved it and I have as well. The structure of the classes gives me an opportunity to spend quality time with the boy without having to come up with creative ways of keeping [...]

It's starting to feel like Autumn in South Australia - a little bit cooler, shorter days, the occasional drop of moisture in the air - which means that we'll be doing less of this.... ...on Boy Z and Papa Party Days. But not to worry. We've been working on some indoor entertainment. A lot of you may not know this but, being the good father that I am, I've made Boy Z's troubled teenage years much easier for him. In a moment of parental [...]

Well, this week kind of got away from me. Add moving house and a continued lack of internet at home; multiply by the normal amount of day-to-day crap and what you get is one blog post a week apparently. The lack of home internet thing is the biggest factor, I tend to read and write after the dinner's made and the kid's in bed at night and without internet at home, I just don't have any good writing time. We had to wait months to get the net up and running when we first moved to Oz and it looks [...]

I was in the office for my writing job today. For those of you who are new around here, one of my jobs is as a scientific writer for a company that tests anti-cancer therapeutics. There are a couple of people in the office of whom I'm particularly fond. Our receptionist is a young Canadian woman who has actually been deported from Australia at least once and spent some time in detention for overstaying her visa once. She's now married and legal and it's nice to have a North American accent among all the Aussie twang in the office. My [...]

Mike Milosh , now known as simply Milosh, produces electronic music and records his own vocals over his tracks. Milosh was trained in classical cello in his early childhood. Milosh's first official release was You Make Me Feel from the Plug Research label on May 18th, 2004. If you browse around Milosh's page, his music seems to make him popular with the ladies. We'll leave the guesswork behind why Milosh's music attracts the ladies to you, but regardless, some of his songs are really good. Here's the track ("Then It Happened,") Milosh submitted for Ghostly Swim, the Adult Swim [...]

Those of you who have been around for a while know that A Free Man originated as a site that was cleverly named after myself - my full name. I started to get a little nervous about internet pirates and also wanted to prevent coworkers or old high school acquaintances from finding the site. I wanted to be anonymous. To be able to say what I wanted without occasionally reckless or borderline libelous statements being attached to me forever. You never know, I may still make that run for president. For the most part, A Free Man works OK. If [...]
Once again Matthew at I(Heart)Music has conducted his annual poll of Canadian bloggers for their top ten hottest artist/bands of the year and again I've happily participated. I found it more difficult this year to compile a list although not because of a lack of Canadian talent - on the contrary there's an abundance of talent to choose from. My definition of 'hottest' is not merely a barometer of artists' success/achievements(e.g touring, new release, record label signing) this year but also factors the connection I made to the music whether that be seeing them live [...]
