The 2012 edition of Canadian Music Week and it's accompanying and needlessly self-branded Canadian Music Fest take place in Toronto March 21-25. A big batch of artists have been announced. Along the usual Canadian favorites (like Ben Caplan , Graydon James , and Domestic Crisis Group ) there are some intriguing international acts, among them this year Fanfarlo and Sara Lowes . The one I'm really looking forward to are New Zealand's Avalanche City . If you haven't heard "Love [...]

Hungry Kids Of Hungary are back in Australia after their trip to North America for SXSW and Canadian Music Week. The group are getting ready to kick off their Final Escapade Tour in two weeks with a stop at Splendour In The Grass, with 'new arrangements, new songs, a new cover and some top secret collaborations on stage'. They'd also like you to download (free) an outtake from their last album called "Keep Talking", which didn't make their album but sounds album worthy to me. by teepoo After hearing their new album Shapeshifting , I was really excited to see Young Galaxy show it off live. However, Lee's Palace's acoustics did not lend well to their sound. Young Galaxy's music is highly dependent on how well its mixed but it wasn't until halfway through the set that they had it all figured out. In the first few songs, you couldn't really hear Catherine's vocals through all the electronics. I have to say though, she was probably one of the most classiest looking [...]

I remember when Imaginary Cities first sent me their music last June . Back then, they were just the duo of Marti Sarbit and Rusty Matyas. In a year, they've got themselves signed to Hidden Pony Records and at CMW they were mentioned in various CMW conference sessions as a band to look out for. For this live performance Rusty and Marti had a band backing them. Their music transcribed greatly to a live set. Their medium tempo-esque tunes was enjoyed by the audience and Marti did a great job with the vocals despite the not-so-great acoustics at Lee's [...]

Hi, I'm Kayley. I got the pleasure of covering the illScarlett show at Tattoo Rock Parlor for this wonderful blog, thanks to Teepoo. Day 2 at Canadian Music Week had many great shows lined up including USS, Crash Karma, and Hollerado. But, I found myself at Tattoo Rock Parlor right around 10:45PM to catch the start of Stereokid's set. I was excited to see Stereokid because they always sound great live, but I was more looking forward to seeing my favorite band illScarlett rock the house at 11:45PM. (The first act of the night was Texas Blood [...]

by teepoo I miss Canadian Music Week already. The highlight of my week was probably seeing Mother Mother perform at the Phoenix Night Club on the Wednesday. It was a sold out ticketed show that accepted only 200 CMW wristbands/passes, so I was there right at 8 to try and be one of the 200 people. It was also raining super hard so only the most dedicated fans were there. Mother Mother wasn't on until 11:30 but there were some really great opening acts (which I will talk [...]

by teepoo One of my favourite newly discovered bands from CMW have to probably be the Australian group Birds of Tokyo. They are a 4 piece group fronted by Ian Kelly, who makes some of the best facial expressions ever. He reminded me of a more hilarious version of the character Sheldon from Big Bang Theory. Joking aside though, these are a talented group of guys. What I enjoyed the most about the group was that they appealed to the young kids who were there to see Mother [...]

by teepoo Second up at the Phoenix on March 9th was Toronto's own Whale Tooth fronted by the sexy Elle LeGrow. She was such an energetic presence on stage bouncing and prancing around with a short dress. I actually spent part of the night trying to figure out if she was wearing pants, because it got dangerous at times. Whale Tooth was another appropriately placed band on Mother Mother night. They worked the audience for sure, even though not many people knew who they were. It was hard [...]

by teepoo Rococode sounds like an unfamiliar band but they are often aided by musician's from bands we have heard of. The band is operated by Laura Smith and Andrew Braun, and aided and abetted by the likes of Ryan Guldemond (Mother Mother), Shaun Huberts (Tegan & Sara) and Johnny Andrews (Tegan & Sara). They were the openers to Mother Mother night. Laura Smith put on quite the adorable performance with her sweet voice and adorable demeanour and just the right amount of energy to get the audience [...]

Esben and the Witch: photo by Michael Ligon <!-- I guess a Polaris Music Prize win doesn't guarantee a lineup down the block for a band's Canadian Musicfest set that's in a relatively intimate venue, well at least if your Montreal Francophone act Karkwa. I generally didn't line up all that long arriving about half an hour before their scheduled set time and when I got in I found the venue to be have ample elbow room amongst those already inside. Members of the band had actually sauntered past us in line as they arrove [...]

Austra @ Wrongbar: photo by Michael Ligon It's no wonder that I only saw two bands for my second night(on March 12) of Canadian Musicfest as my first night consisted of 6 bands in total, the first three which I reviewed a few days ago . Let's waste no time and continue onward. Next up for the midnight-and-onward festivities was Brian Borcherdt at The Garrison. Borcherdt is better known in most circles as the frontman of sound/beat manipulators Holy Fuck , but his work as a singer-songwriter [...]

" This past week was CMW (Canadian Music Week) in Toronto. Janelle Monae and Shad were some of the feature acts. The afterparty was at Revival and we caught a quick freestyle from Janelle Monae and Shad ." [ via ]

Toronto – As some of you may know, fellow Panic Manualer Paul is our resident expert in all things metal and hard rock. Paul has been making an effort of late to broaden his musical horizons by covering jazz and funk shows. I commend him on his efforts. He has risen to the challenge and to this I say "a funkety funk." As the Panic Manual's resident jazz writer, I've been tasked by Paul with the following challenge: "review me some hard punk rock music at Canadian Music Week." To this I respond, "I am up to [...]
