Photos by G. D'Angelo In 1995, I was working at a record store when D'Angelo's debut album "Brown Sugar" came out. It was love at first listen and I've been a fan of D'Angelo ever since. He released a second genius album "Voodoo" in 2000 and then took an extremely long hiatus. He's been playing gigs off and on for the last year and I have some good news. D'Angelo is set to release a new single in April 2013! D'Angelo is playing a tribute to [...]
Any day that goes by without even so much as a transient burst of David Longstreth's Dirty Projectors is one which somehow leaves me feeling strangely unfulfilled. And truth be known, I've thus far this year rather neglected Swing Lo Magellan so it's something of a saving grace that they released this one over the weekend. There's A Fire originally featured as the flipside to a limited white label release of Offspring Are Blank pressed especially to coincide with a show at New York's Carnegie Hall last month, and it's one to really rekindle [...]

Oresti Tsonopoulos The lights darken, a door off to the left cracks open, out steps David Longstreth solo. He calmly walks to the front of the stage of Carnegie Hall and begins a rendition of "Swing Lo Magellan" alone with his guitar. As the nucleus for the living organism of a band called the Dirty Projectors , Longstreth starting the show alone onstage with the title track of their latest record was the perfect, understated move. Playing with melody and phrasing like a cat pawing yarn, his yearning voice seemed to both [...]

Early each year impresario Michael Dorf puts together an impressive lineup of acts to pay tribute to a legendary rocker or rock band for a benefit concert held at NYC's iconic Carnegie Hall. Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Elton John, R.E.M., Neil Young, The Who and The Rolling Stones have been feted at past sold-out Carnegie shows. For the 2013 event, the 20+ as-of-yet-unnamed acts will honor the music of Prince on March 7th. So far, the nine installments of Dorf's shows have raised over $700,000 for music [...]

Last Wednesday, the night before Thanksgiving, worlds collided when Conor Oberst (@comvb) played a stripped down show at - wait for it - Carnegie Hall. Once you got over how strange it felt to be sitting in velvet seats listening to moody teenage anthems, the show was by far one of the best this year. Oberst has an aptitude for playing what the audience wants to hear, covering old Bright Eyes favorites such as “Classic Cars” and “First Day of My Life.” And also playing material from his many musical endeavors: Monsters of Folk [...]
Conor Oberst and Ian Felice sang beautiful songs at Carnegie Hall.

Precious little rival that 1,000-foot Pikachu towering in Midtown Manhattan to the generation who came of age during the Pokemon craze. Except for, maybe, Conor Oberst . The introspective singer-songwriter played a special, seated (and sold out!) set at Carnegie Hall the night before Thanksgiving. You could picture everyone in the audience with ruddy cheeks from a hard spin of Fevers and Mirrors at some point in their past -these were mostly Bright Eyes lifers. Does he have any other kind of fan? As the founder and kid-poet of Bright Eyes, Oberst became a bastian of [...]
