[There's plenty of great Christmas songs out there, but most suffer terribly from over-exposure. To remedy that, EbM presents a selection of alternative Christmas songs .] The Casiotone For The Painfully Alone brand has been retired for over a year now, but that's no reason not to enjoy this festive little ditty. A reason not to enjoy it would be the stark bleakness of the lyrics; I'm a big believer in the 'cheer' part of Christmas, but nevertheless there's still a few less-than-cheerful numbers amongst my [...]
I can't believe it's already December! The last few months increasingly have felt as if they were picking up speed, I don't even feel like November happened. That's time i guess. I think you'll be happy with this weeks selection, I know I am and that usually translates well. . . Download: Jesse Payne - [...]

Nowhere near as ubiquitous as 1999, When Doves Cry or Kiss or anywhere as dirty as say Darling Nikki , When You Were Mine , by Prince is still a perennial favorite amongst the die-hards and, judging by the small grip of covers today, fellow musicians as well. It's a simple, stellar piece of heartbreak pop that, despite being released in 1980, could have easily been heard coming out of some Detroit jukebox sandwiched somewhere between The Shirelles and The Shangri-Las. Fun fact: this one [...]

Being one of my all time favourite solo acts, having Owen Ashworth aka Casiotone For The Painfully Alone answer a few questions for CitR last year was undoubted proof of how far this website had come in only a few short months. However, it was also in said interview that Ashworth announced he would no longer be recording under the Casiotone moniker, and instead would be taking up the alias Advance Base . Musically, the new tracks are cleaner and [...]
Casiotone (a type of electronic keyboard from the 1980s) for the Painfully Alone, aka Owen Ashworth, has a artist name that says it all. It is music for the painfully alone, which- let's be honest- is all of us at some point during our days, weeks, months, and life. I've never heard a musician bear his soul over a keyboard and drum patterns harder than CFTPA, and not in a whiny indie-band kind of way, but in a 'hey, I'm a big dude with a beard and life really fucking sucks sometimes' kind of way. And for me, that really hits home. Every time [...]

So I was walking to work this morning listening to the Classic that is, Etiquette , by the now not functioning Casiotone For The Painfully Alone . That record will probably always make me sad, not least because it's so fucking heart wrenching, but also because I was under the impression that Owen Ashworth would never make music again. Rather wonderfully I came home later that day to find this whimsical, spiritually ecstatic tune in my inbox. It's short, delicate and tells the story of a childhood pony. A new direction, a [...]
Blogophilia refers to the series of mixes that were developed from promotional mp3s found on different music blogs. As we've grown, we've come to rely less on other blogs and more on what we're sent that we review or feature. We receive a lot of requests to repost old Blogophilia mixes, and have to kindly refuse because of space issues. Well, that's going to change. This summer, we'll feature 2-3 Blogophilia posts a week until we're current. If you've followed this site, you'll know we already maintain links [...]
Part of the California weekend bash with The Donkeys , here is the second-to-last Casiotone for the Painfully Alone show ever! This one goes out to my beautiful wife and the last seven wonderful years we've spent together. I can only wish for a million more. Hope you all have a good one, and don't worry this can be enjoyed with or without a loved one in company. As usual, I've bundled all the tracks in a convenient zip file or you can grab the tracks you want individually below. Thanks for reading, I love you all. Back when I started doing these mixes every month, I saw it as a manageable way to keep recommending music without the effort that it takes to do a researched, singular writeup. It seemed to me that picking out 10 random songs wouldn't be all that hard - I always have new things that I'm listening to, as well as my entire musical upbringing to highlight. A part of the experienced mixtaper in me was never satisfied with these as "mixes." For one, there is only so much you can do in 10 songs... they really seemed more like [...]

I'd like to wish you all a quick happy new year, as I enjoy some final moments of rest before work and attempt to get caught up behind the scenes (see: answer emails..snack, repeat). I managed to hit up a few parties last night (by bike!) and checked out some amazing bands like Chairs Missing and Cuckoo Chaos in a living room next to a few hundred kids spilling out into the backyard, where we then roasted some smores over a giant bonfire among more strangers than friends. Here's to New Years' Kisses: [...]

Happy New Year! Hooray it's finally 2011 and I'm ready for a fresh start. Thanks to everyone--musicians, readers, and friends--that made 2010 a wonderful and exciting year, now let's make this year better. I made you all this little mixtape to rest your weary hungover head on. I definitely have the best version of Auld Lang Syne by Lake Huron which just debuted this morning. I tried pretty hard to make it a positive mix but that's just not the most realistic thing so there are a few little songs filled with doubt that snuck their way in there. How [...]

It's Christmas Day, we have had our breakfast of smoked salmon and poached eggs, and I decided I might as well settle down with a bottle of fizz and talk shite on the internet. Given we opened all our presents and had a big meal when my parents were visiting last week, I figured I was obliged to do no more than get pissed and slowly waste away the day today, stopping only to gorge myself on roast lamb and some indeterminate point in the evening - whenever Mrs. Toad gets over last night's hangover I suppose. I [...]
