>> We've been way behind. But we're clawing our way back, and one thing that has jazzed us to no end over the last two months is the debut release from Boston's deservedly hyped Earthquake Party! (exclamation point theirs, we suppose a hat tip to post-rock collective Godspeed? No?). We first mentioned the band in a sidelong manner way back in late 2010, when it appeared on the bill for local noise punkers Young Adults ' record release party. Well, Earthquake Party! almost a year to the day later issued its own debut, [...]

by David Palmer Artifacts are important. They provide a touchstone to an event, a person, a group, to a memory. And to this end artifacts are valuable if only to serve as a touchstone, which is why it is important to have such things. It was a cold late October night in Boston. One of the worst winters in Boston's history was rapidly approaching, but this night it was just cold and crisp, without a cloud in the sky. The crowds of people crossing Boylston Street and through Copley Square as myself [...]

>> Noise pop continues to thrive in Richmond, and scene stand-outs White Laces seem poised for a break-out 2012. The quartet has an ambitious slate of releases in the offing, the first of which is a cracking split single with sometimes-tourmates Arches , who operate out of our beloved Philadelphia. Richmond-based label Worthless Junk is taking orders now for "Dissolve Into Color" b/w "Late Last Night" right here . While the official release date is Jan. 24 (a certain blogger's birthday...), you can hear White Laces ' A-side via the Soundcloud embed below and watch [...]

It's time to listen to a bunch of the tracks I have not posted recently. Here is the next NOT POSTED mix. These are just a few of the songs that would get there own individual posts on here on GIMME TINNITUS, if I only had the time. Lavinia is the post-rock super-group that everyone's been talking about. Featuring members from bands such as Caspian, Eksi Ekso and The Burning Paris, they've started off in a big way with their incredible There Is Light Between Us . Beginning 2011 in the same matter, they're touring the U.S. and are also making an appearance at The Mylene Sheath's Showcase at SXSW . I caught up with Nate Shumaker, who gave us the past, present and future of the band. Ben: What made the members of the band [...]

Supergroups always tend to be a wee bit disappointing. There's always a big hype, they put out a couple of records that, though good, could easily be trumped by ones of their respective bands, and then go on their merry way. Lavinia, however, is one supergroup that did it the right way: they took all of their extraordinary talents and combined them to put out a fantastic record. Featuring members of the Mylene Sheath roster, guitarist/vocalist Nate Shumaker (ex-Eksi Ekso, On Fire, The Burning Paris, Everdown) bassist Philip Jaimeson (main guitarist of Caspian), drummer Alex [...]

Ah...the holidays: a time for family and friends, a time for making memories and keeping traditions, and for some, a time to catch up and review all the great albums that have come out this year that I never got a chance to post. Honestly, this one ranks up there as one of the best releases of 2010 (in my humble opinion), and I think after hearing just 2 minutes of this incredible album, you'll know why. Hailing from Sweden, this 3-piece powerhouse is certainly not new on the scene. Since 2006, Tomas Torsson, Daniel Öhman and Niklas [...]

When the outside world really is just too busy, noisy, fluid and I need to generate focus, I can be often found squeezing my little black earphones in and nodding my head towards the book in my lap. And at the moment the sound to accompany this solitude is always Caspian . Some of the most exquisite music you could wish to hear. Amazing melodies, crushing crescendo's and blissfully quiet moments. You do not get such an artistic range of emotion and sound from many other bands. And all without lyrics. I am ashamed that [...]

A rave is the only place where it might actually be considered cooler to dance by yourself than to dance with a partner. To be honest, I haven't been to a full-blown warehouse rave like this since I was 17 years old, and for a reason. Raves are sweaty. They're full of weird people, high on who knows what, spinning glowing things all around to music that's way too loud and all sounds the same to me. But I decided to venture out of my old-man closed-mindedness about raves to try it out once more. And it couldn't have been on [...]

Of Foam And Wave mp3 Caspian Tertia ... buy it! For my 600th post I fiddled around and wondered what to do and decided to give it away to Mike, my guest writer, because sometimes stuff isn't very meaningful unless you share it. Rounding out the Stateside leg of their current tour before crossing the Atlantic to the Old Country, Caspian rolled into Chicago for a night of atmospheric post [...]

Miyuki Samata A whole pile of concert announcements big and small came down the wire yesterday, but none more exciting - personally, at least - than this one. Self-proclaimed Japanese action comic punk band Peelander-Z - hands down highlights of our Hot Freaks! showcases at SxSW in 2008 and in 2009 - are finally bringing their absurd (and entertaining) beyond words show to Canada ... well, southern Ontario and Montreal, at least. And that includes two nights in Toronto - September 1 at the Velvet Underground and September 2 [...]
Yhdysvaltalainen Caspian esittäytyy ensi kertaa suomalaisyleisölle Korjaamolla toukokuun lopulla. Caspian on viisimiehinen post-rock kokoonpano, jossa kukaan ei laula. Caspian sai alkunsa vuonna 2003 Beverlyssä, Massachusettsissa. Jo vuoden 2005 alussa bändi kiersi japanilaisyhtye Monon lämmittelijänä. Yhtyeen debyytti-EP You Are the Conductor julkaistiin vuonna 2005 ja tuorein julkaisu Tertia näki päivänvalon vuoden 2009 lopussa Make My Day Recordsin kätilöimänä. Yhtye yhdistelee soitossaan raskaita ja keveitä elementtejä. Uusin yritys tallentaa tämä soinnin hegemonia äänitteelle on saanut nimen Tertia, kolmas. Yhtye on kolmannella julkaisulla soundissaan samanaikaisesti vilpitön ja provosoiva. Tertia on osiensa summa ja ammentaa voimansa Caspianin suurella sydämellä synnyttämistä äänivalleis ta, jotka eivät [...]

Whenever I go to an indie show in Seattle, I'm surprised at the small number of people lined up outside the door. Once the show begins, I'm more often than not sad that more Seattleites aren't inside enjoying the event. There's something about a great live music performance that can't be equaled by a quiet night at home or a drunken night walking the streets, even when the fresh, brisk air blows out of Puget Sound. Such was the case at Neumos on Wednesday, when the metal-tinged post-rock band Red Sparowes headlined a night of epic [...]
Fang Island Press Photo Fang Island is a quintet from Brooklyn… Do I really need to say anything more? Should I just end the preview here? I say this because everyone loves a band from Brooklyn, regardless of whether they're any good or not. New York. The Big Apple. The City That Never Sleeps. Would it be [...]

this new primer covers what you could call the "post-slint" side of post-rock; these are bands that tend to start quiet then get really loud then get quiet again. they tend to be on very good terms with their distortion pedals. they tend not to involve singers. they are frequently exhileratingly predictable (i went through a phase of being "off mogwai" because it always feels like you know what's coming next, until i realised i wanted to hear it anyway). they tend to have very muscular bass sounds. i like all of those things. ::: [...]

Three, count them, three, I've-been-babying-my-face-too- much-recently-and-maybe-it-cou ld-use-a-little-shredding reasons to scoot on over to the Lincoln Hall tonight... 1. L.A.'s Red Sparowes are what one might call a supergroup of sorts. You'll find current or ex-members of heavy hitters Isis, Halifax Pier, Pleasure Forever, Angel Hair and The VSS. You'll hear sprawling, massive instrumental songs that sometimes wash over you and other times go straight for the face melting, often times within the same tune. Fans of Pelican and Russian Circles take note, this will totally float your boat. Here's a video of Red [...]
