6am Repeat is a recurring feature here at Folk Hive in which we stream the latest track that plays incessantly in the earbuds when we awake at that hour and imbibe massive amounts of coffee and cigarettes in preparation for the advancing day. From that first sound of the startlingly calm guitar riff on 'I Make Windows' I was a fan. Then came the harmonies and "nothing will be fine" was sung by two or three or four and though if taken at face value it's a slightly depressing sentence, when [...]

With "Keys", Air Waves proves that you don't need to be technical geniuses to write a great song. "Keys" is quite simplistic, natural pop reminiscent of California beaches and sunny summer afternoons. Oddly enough, this band hails from New York. Basic guitar melodies, unembellished vocals; it's all pure and easy. But it's also damn catchy. Tropical to a point, the song is adorned with traces of acoustic power pop. "Keys" is unabashed pop greatness. In a way, it reminds me a bit of early stuff by Somebody Still Loves You Boris [...]

![Album review: Air Waves - s/t - Catbird Records [release date: March 2008???]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1893162_lg.jpg)
I don't know why I got this CD in the mail a few days ago because, according to Air Waves' MySpace page, it came out in March of 2008 . and is apparently sold out . Perhaps the blue cover, as opposed to the yellow sleeve I've seen around, indicates a rerelease? A pressing mistake? Or was this just clogged up in the mail for a year-and-change? [...]

i, at one time, wanted to start my own label, but i had to be honest with myself and admit that i dont have that kind of freakin time to dedicate to something like that. as much as i would love to venture into something like that, i just dont need another distraction that could lead to another mild obsession. i still may try to put out a few things here and there, but nothing like the scope that i would ideally like to get into. some of my fellow constituents have done just that, parlayed their respective [...]

I wrote about Forest Fire back in '06 on TPATS , and to me their sound has changed quite a bit since then. Thankfully someone else with some resources took notice of this band from Brooklyn and put out a cd this past year. The album, Survival , the label, our friends at Cat Bird Records , which is a perfect fit if you ask me. I came across Forest Fire like I said in '06, but it was only because band member Adam Spittler told me about them, since I was in [...]

Well, this is quite the Osar-category i know, but it's just a way for me to talk about 10 artists that i like, but just don't seem to fit in the top 50-list that is coming up after this post. (well, not immediately after it, somewhere this week). The albums of these people have their flaws, but they are promising enough to make me look forward excitedly to when they release their next album. So, without no further ado, here they are. DISCLAIMER: ok, first add this. The songs I add aren't necessarily my favourite of [...]

In celebration, Catbird Records is offering up their entire catalog for FREE. One day only, ends at midnight. So, you've only got a few hours left to score some awesome records— some extremely rare or sold out. Catbird Records .
Fulton Lights is out there on the first leg of his 5-month long world tour, and is currently keeping a tour diary for the site Electronic Voice Phenomenon . Oh, btw, he's also doing a "field recordings blog" while he travels- it's pretty cool. That one's called Sound Travels . Oh, and 2 new shows were just added for Poland . Air Waves has a nice new video out for "Circle of Gnomes," directed by Sophia Peer. Someone Still Loves You Boris [...]
A new Catbird Records release is out today: the second full-length from Fulton Lights . It's called The Way We Ride . On this one, Andrew Spencer and Co. sweep back the dense orchestral layering in favor of a stripped-down, lean and mean approach; and the results are great. This record melds the faded strums of music past with an austere technological bent. ::: Fulton Lights - The Way We Ride ::: The disc is 10 tracks, and comes in a [...]

Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin stopped by AOL's "The Interface" and regaled them with a set of tunes, namely "Half Awake (Deb)," "You Could Write A Book," "Dead Right," and "Think I Wanna Die." You can grab the performance as an MP3 here , or a really high-quality video here . Starting in September, the boys are off to the UK and points European for about a month and a half; check their website for dates (and someone let me know if, somehow, an impromptu Catbird Records night [...]
Yeah, that's right: Forest Fire are playing their first show since the release of their wildly successful new Catbird full-length Survival (which you can download for FREE here if you're a cheapskate). Swing by Southpaw in Brooklyn tonight to catch FF, Susu and The Kiss Off . And in case you were wondering what everybody's been saying about the new album? Here you go: "5/5 stars" "I'm OBSESSED with this album" "Amazing, amazing" [...]

catbird records is "a boutique indie label specializing in limited- and short-run releases", the latest of which is forest fire 's full length album survival . following the steps of radiohead and more recently, girl talk , survival is offered as a download for a "pay as you wish" price. as the album opener, the free-flowing folk of "i make windows" is at once beautiful and dissonant, never trying to hard to please, but also never too dull to let go. mp3: forest fire - i make windows

A welcome release that coincided perfectly with the true arrival of spring here in the Bay Area comes to us from Brooklyn's Air Waves . Their new EP, released through the excellent Catbird Records , includes 5 tracks that drip optimism; there's a certain level of comfort evident in every song. (The cover art is beautiful as well). See for yourself: ::: Air Waves - Shine On Order the limited edition (200!) CD for only 4 bucks directly from Catbird Records. [ Air [...]

Fulton Lights is the current project of Andrew Spencer Goldman, he of previous works like Maestro Echoplex and John Guilt. And not to disrespect those projects, but early listens to this Fulton Lights disc should place it head and shoulders above his previous musical endeavours. I saw someone describe the music as indie pop with an ambient backdrop, I like that and dont think I could give it a better description. The album will see a release next month as a split between Goldmans label, Android Eats Records , and Catbird Records , [...]

Catbird Records is one of Macktronic's favorite small labels for a couple of reasons. First, I like their music (Tap Tap [post here ] and Maestro Echoplex, to mention a few). Secondly, they pay attention to their artwork (custom screenprinting and so on). Lastly, their stuff is quite affordable. Their latest release, The Spring EP by Pet Politics is a nice little four song collection of indie rock. Here's the tracklist: 1. Pet Politics - Sunday Morning [...]
We would like to introduce you to Tap Tap . When we kicked back, threw on the headphones, and listened to this artist we thought "Behold. The pitch of an eagle and a soaring span of wing."
