Yhdysvaltalaismuusikko Chan Marshall eli Cat Power saapuu lähes 20 vuoden odotuksen päätteeksi viimeinkin Suomeen. Nykypäivän arvostetuimpiin vaihtoehtoartisteihin lukeutuva Marshall esiintyy yhtyeensä kanssa Helsingin The Circuksessa sunnuntaina 5. helmikuuta. Uransa alkuvuosina Cat Power tuli tunnetuksi kokeellisista folkia ja alternative-musiikkia yhdistelleistä lo-fi-albumeista, joita artisti äänitti yhteistyössä esimerkiksi Sonic Youthista tuttujen muusikoiden kanssa. Marshall saavutti laajempaa huomiota hieman helpommin lähestyttävän You Are Free -pitkäsoiton (2003) myötä. Cat Powerin suuri läpimurto tapahtui vuoden 2006 The Greatest -albumilla, jolla Marshallin kanssa musisoivat pitkän linjan memphisläiset blues- ja R&B-muusikot. Chan Marshallin kahdeksas pitkäsoitto, pääosin lainamateriaalia sisältänyt Jukebox ilmestyi neljä vuotta [...]

Chan Marshall delivers a seven-minute visual for a new version of (originally from her '96 album What Would the Community Think) 'Kings Ride By.' The video was directed by Giovanni Ribisi and features Manny Pacquiao. Not a bad track to listen to while hitting the speed bag if you ask us. Expect a new Lp in the upcoming year, yes you can get excited now cause according to Matador Records.... it's actually going to happen!
Cat Power, ‘King Rides By’ Video As promised , Cat Power returned tonight with a new recording and official video. Teaming up with boxer Manny Pacquiao and actor/director Giovanni Ribisi, Chan Marshall’s holiday treat comes in the form of an extended version of her 1996 What Would The Community Think song “King Rides By,” available to download now for the price of donating to various charities over on her site . Go pick up a copy and/or watch Pacquiao work out on the speed bag to the tune of this excellent cut above.

Chan Marshall is getting ready to spread some holiday cheer.
Earlier this year, Chan Marshall debuted an album’s worth of new Cat Power songs live on tour, not long after revealing that her first LP of original material since 2006’s The Greatest was in the works. Well, some good news just arrived. The record is “almost done,” she said tonight, adding even better news: “In 9 days [I] will have a song available for holiday charity download.” Christmas Eve this year will bring a new recording (and video) with a “list of charities” to choose from as compensation. Here’s hoping the event [...]
Tonight, as anyone who's been near a TV in the past month already knows, the much-hyped Fox singing-competition show The X Factor makes its debut. The Americanized version of the hit British show might be new to us, but then again, it's not really new to us. Simon Cowell is the man responsible for putting the show together, and he's brought back his former American Idol colleague Paula Abdul. As someone who's spent a shameful amount of time watching (and writing about ) American Idol and its imitators, I'm way more excited than [...]

Discovered by the Rolling Stones in 1964, the young ingénue rose to fame with the first Jagger / Richards composition, 'As Tears Go By,' and was the muse for many of [...]
After a reader sent in this clip of She & Him’s Zooey Deschanel taking on the timelessly indelible tune “Tonight You Belong to Me” tonight, it recalled the many endearing ukulele-backed covers of Billy Rose and Lee David’s 1926 duet to reach these ears of late (e.g. Eddie Vedder with Cat Power’s Chan Marshall , Fiona Apple with Jon Brion , Steve Martin with Bernadette Peters ). Apropos of nothing, let’s revisit the lot below: Zooey Deschanel & Ben Schwartz [...]

There’s still no word on when those new Cat Power songs we heard in February will arrive in studio form, but in the meantime, the latest recording with vocals from Chan Marshall just arrived: “Tonight You Belong to Me,” an old standard from the 1920s that was famously performed as a duet in The Jerk by Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters, not to mention Fiona Apple and Jon Brion , among others. For this take, Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder invoked Navin Johnson ’s ukulele-backed take for a cut off his new solo [...]
Eddie Vedder is set to release a solo album of covers and original songs as performed on ukulele with the descriptive title of Ukulele Songs . The Pearl Jam front man is joined by Glen Hansard on 'Sleepless Nights' and Cat Power , aka Chan Marshall, guests on 'Tonight You Belong to Me' - Vedder sang on Cat Power's 2003 You Are Free record. Ukulele Songs will be released on Pearl Jam's label Monkeywrench Records at the end of May, the lead single 'Longing to [...]
Video: Chan Marshall Plays New Cat Power Song I’d be remiss in not sharing this clip of Chan Marshall previewing new Cat Power material in San Francisco last month, which was just added to our now 4-song collection of live footage from the show. It’s unclear what the first tune’s title might be (the second one is 2003 You Are Free cut “Good Woman,” of course), but per a YouTube commenter and a ‘06 New York Times piece , it’s possible that the song (and forthcoming LP?) is called “Sun.” Either [...]
Cat Power Previews New Songs Live (Video) Not only did I have the pleasure of seeing Cat Power perform live with the Dirty Delta Blues Band (Dirty Three’s Jim White, Jon Spencer Blues Explosion’s Judah Bauer, and the Delta 72’s Gregg Foreman) for the first time on Friday night, but the crowd at SF’s Fillmore Auditorium and I were treated to live previews of tunes likely to appear on her forthcoming album , as well. More thoughts on the show are on the way, but for now, check out the night’s stunning opening slow jam [...]

Ok, here's part two of the girls that rock the underground. If there is a young or unknown upstart you think we should know about please let us know and we'll get their music out. These next ladies have been there and done that. Surely setting the bar for girls in rock. Juliana Maxwells 05' Juliana Hatfield - The years have encroached on Juliana but she's somehow managed to make a lot of really consistant records since going solo after the break-up of [...]
Here at brokenheartboy, we love DIY artist musicians. A new one that fits the bill is strangely out of Savannah, Georgia and goes by the name Lady Lazarus. She is the better Lady, and if you're thinking what I'm thinking, then yes, she is named after the Sylvia Plath poem. Her latest album of bedroom [...]

happy sunday evening! well, the bears got killed, but the saints won, so it wasnt an all around waste of a day. i love that cbs, for two out of three weeks, has teased us bears fan living in the south with the "coming up next the game of the week, the bears vs...." then only to play an infomercial in its place. really? it may have been cause the saints were playing at the same time, but a few weeks ago it was the bears vs eagles, and they ran the bucs game, lame. then today, which they were [...]

[Here we'll look at some things you probably passed up when you were a kid because you were too busy playing Star Wars with your friend who was actually a jerk… and who threw a tantrum when you schooled him in NHL ’96. What a little bitch. There’s roots in the ground that still nuture.] What Would the Community Think Cat Power Matador, 1996 Words by Christoper Carosi On the [...]

What starts as a Grizzly Bear-styled, barebones acoustic crescendos into something much more grandiose. Strings swell in, picking up the humble acoustic strumming, matching it with dirty electric guitar. The boom of kick drum sounds more like a timpani filling every inch of space in a cathedral. When the boom lays low, the song is pulled along by a rustle and patter of brushes on the snare drum. With violin and cello beautifully dancing throughout, it has an air of majesty as if it were some modern day hymn. Despite its lo-fi roots, "Dear Chan Marshall" sounds rather heavenly. [...]

For her last Cat Power album of all original songs, 2006’s The Greatest , Chan Marshall recruited the great Memphis Rhythm Band, which included the likes of Mabon “Teenie” Hodges, Leroy “Flick” Hodges, and veteran Stax house band drummer Steve Potts, to back her vocals. A tough act to follow, indeed. So who has “The Greatest” singer enlisted for her latest? Marshall spoke to Rolling Stone at Matador’s 21st birthday bash over the weekend in Vegas: I’m working on a new album and I’m [...]
