Frank Yang Though I'm probably a bit late to the Caitlin Rose party, her 2010 full-length debut Own Side Now having completely flown under my radar, I'm thankful that I was able to get it into my ears earlier this year before her follow-up The Stand-In came out because it gave me a reference point to appreciate just how good The Stand-In is. Which is not to say that there's anything wrong with Own Side Now at all - it's [...]

Shawn Brackbill When I first started playing guitar in high school, I spent an inordinate amount of time in music and pawn shops looking for pedals - they were (relatively) cheap, fun, and would obviously make me a far better player than, oh, practice. And one thing that these shops' stock had in common were chorus pedals. So many chorus pedals. Some shops were like a veritably baby blue sea of Boss chorus pedals. Because this was the early '90s, when grunge was king and everyone wanted distortions and no one wanted to sound like Andy Summers. [...]

Frank Yang I don't think Toronto necessarily has an international reputation as a destination for expatriate pop geniuses, but apparently Canadian women hold a certain appeal for them. Joe Pernice of Pernice Brothers has been up here for the better part of eight years while Norman Blake of Teenage Fanclub moved to Kitchener a couple years ago - both on account of their Canadian wives - and on Friday night, they were on stage together at The Dakota Tavern for a low-key show together. It had been advertised as a Joe Pernice [...]
This week saw the release of the new Santigold album, which has been four years in the making, although somehow it seems a lot longer. While we're not entirely sold on Master of My Make-Believe , it did get us thinking about the fact that 2012 is shaping up as a good year for ticking off the list of long-awaited records that will (hopefully) be arriving at last. After the jump, we've pulled together a selection of 10 albums for which we've been waiting far too long — shit, some of them have been pending [...]

Frank Yang Maybe listening to Jesus Of Cool and Labour Of Lust weren't the best warm-ups for Nick Lowe's show at The Phoenix on Monday night. After all, he was many many years removed from being the young pub-rock firebrand who recorded those first two records, having settled comfortably into the role of professorial pop singer-songwriter - a guise that's suited his still-potent pen quite nicely, as last year's The Old Magic proved. But if you [...]

Lollapalooza Chile , the offshoot of Perry Farrell's Chicago-based extravaganza, will look to make a memorable first impression with a lineup headed by none other than rapper Kanye West, pop-rock super stars The Killers, and Farrell's outfit, Jane's Addiction. Set to take place from April 2-3 in Santiago's Parque O’Higgins, the bill also includes Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Deftones, Fatboy Slim, The Flaming Lips, The National, Empire of the Sun, Cat Power, Cypress Hill, 30 Seconds to Mars, 311, Sublime with Rome, Ben Harper, Cold War Kids, CSS, Devendra Banhart, Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeroes, Ghostland Observatory, Fischerspooner, [...]

Cheryse recently wrote about First Aid Kit , a band that first came to my attention thanks to this cover of Fleet Foxes’ “Tiger Mountain Peasant Song”. Re-listening to that cover got me thinking about other covers I’ve enjoyed over the past few years, so I decided to compile and share some of my favorites with you guys. There really weren’t any strict guidelines, but I tried to stick to more recent songs that I felt people either overlooked or forgot about, like TV on the Radio’s “Mr. Grieves”, or [...]
Dan, maybe the Coltrane one's too old, even though it's got the only complete live version? If so, please substitute w/ Petra Haden's "Petra Haden Sings: The Who Sell Out," ok?
80. Jay Reatard Blood Visions For all those folks that have been screaming "punk is dead" for two decades I'd like to present Jay Reatard to show you that punk is most definitely not dead. Now his tunes may not be wholly punk in nature, there's a bit of metal and even some pop mixed in there, but his attitude and his approach to songwriting is most definitely punk. Two and three minute long songs spit out in the blink of an eye with hard charging guitars to go along with them. Yeah, punk's not [...]

Gig Posters: The Art of Contemporary Music Promotion , a Concert Poster art show at the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft, opens with this Friday's Gallery Hop and goes on until May 16th. The exhibit is free if you go during the first Gallery Hop. Many of the artists' works are local or are somehow connected to the Louisville music scene ad have done posters for the community. One of my personal favorites, Ron Jansin (of MadPixel - above), will be presenting his work and will be available to [...]

The last mixtape I made had so many contenders that I had to craft a follow-up. A similarly alternative rock-based selection with a twist, this playlist continues the themes of contemplation, unanswered questions and timeless dilemmas (especially of the heart and loneliness). It's a long one, so I won't comment on every pick. Opener Suede's "Beautiful Ones" gets things off to an upbeat, albeit slightly bitter, start. Stereophonics' hit single "Dakota" is a hopeful ode to a flame, like similarly optimistic "This Time Tomorrow" by The Kinks. Red Hot Chili Peppers' classic "Scar Tissue" and The Raveonettes' "Heartbreak Stroll" are [...]

You might remember a post I did a few months ago where I introduced you to the concept of "Miis Meet Indie Rock" (if you didn't see it, go familiarize yourself ). Since that post, miis (which are those little avatars for Nintendo Wii) of the "indie" variety have exploded onto the scene and carictures of some of my favorite artists been popping up all over the place. I decided that it would only be right to do a "part two", and show you guys some of these. All of these Miis were found at MiiPlaza.net [...]

It seems that every Hobbit must have it's trilogy . And the greasy circus hobbit is no different. So yes, you guessed it, following on from last week's Flaming Lips / Jools Holland post, this is the second of three Later based posts. Having dug back through my videoed archives, I've converted some of my favourite Later performances into mp3's for you guys. Ain't that nice of me? They're spread out from over the years. Some recent. [...]

Talk about saving the best for last. The most recent series of 'Later ... with Jools Holland' was, without a doubt, the worst ever. Jools resembled more of a bumbling, greasy, circus hobbit than ever before. Asked more inane questions than ever before. And, where in the past they've managed to have at least two decent guest on each show, this series was severely lacking. Episode upon episode of dross. And then came the final episode. The redeeming episode. An episode so crammed full of rocking goodness that not even Jools' [...]
