Photography by DOLORES I like to think my mama raised me right, to always remember that anything I (as a man) can do, a woman can do (and often, better, as the old adage goes (hell, just see my baby and THAT become quite obvious). There are a few things I do really well, maybe even better than most men and/or women, but there are tons of things that most men and women can do better than me. It don't matter whether or not you got a penis (amirite, [...]

The lineup for the 2008 Bridge School Benefit concert has been announced, to be held October 25 & 26 at Shoreline Amphitheatre. As always, Neil Young (a school co-founder) will anchor the lineup which also features Wilco, Jack Johnson, Cat Power, Death Cab for Cutie and Norah Jones. In addition to those artists, ZZ Top and McLachlan perform only on the first day, and the Smashing Pumpkins and Josh Groban perform only on day two. Young launched the annual benefit in 1986 in order to provide support the Bridge School, which assists children with severe physical [...]
James Jean, Fables #76 Cat Power | Hard Times In New York Town (Dylan Cover) + TORI AMOS | I CAN'T SEE NEW YORK /live

After missing Spiritualized twice since moving to LA, I decided that I would see the band on their next US tour no matter where they played. And although I would have rather experienced a full set in a smaller venue, I bought tickets to last night's show at the Hollywood Bowl because, well, it's been ten fucking years since I've seen Spiritualized live. How the hell did I let that happen? My inability to think of an answer to that question is what compelled me to purchase the tickets. A lot has happened in the ten [...]

The anally retentive nerd in me is happy. Very happy. It’s been a month or so since the launch of the new LastFM and I love it. With a new look and new tricks up it's sleeve, never has being a list obsessed geek muso been so much fun. It now updates every bit of data instantly and allows you to look at your listening habits in pretty much any way, shape or form you desire. Along with Facebook , Drowned In Sound and various mp3blogs, LastFM is one of my [...]

We realize not everyone can make it to Chicago this weekend to partake in the sheer awesomeness known as Lollapalooza . If you're stuck at home and would still like to watch some of the performances, the AT&T Blue Room is once again the place to check out. Listed below are the scheduled performances. We also included links to all the band's myspaces. [ AT&T Blue Room Official Site ] Friday (August 1) : 1:15 pm: Holy Fuck 2:15 pm: [...]

Beck has never believed in any form of structure for his albums. That has stayed true all these years with numerous albums. He has finally signed to an independent label (interscope to XL) again since the early 90s, and with the help of Brian Burton aka danger mouse (one half of gnarls barkley ) it seems to be paying off. According to him, this album was 2 years worth of songwriting fit into 10 full weeks. This album is actually fun and intelligently [...]

I've been sitting on the Modern Guilt promo for a little while now. At first I wasn't even going to post it, because my first impression was that the Danger Mouse -produced effort was just sorta 'eh'. But this is typical in my opinion with Beck : I expect to be able to write him off, and the bastard grows on me. Modern Guilt may not be Beck's best album, but it's still a pretty strong piece of work. Retro flavor from '60s California psych-rock, deconstructed hip hop and beautiful folk smash [...]

Neil Diamond and Cat Power may seem like strange bedfellows. But tonight, they share Birmingham. Somewhere across town, on another stage, Neil Diamond no doubt wows his crowd in the same way Cat Power does hers. And bizarre as it may seem, the parallels go beyond geography. Both have recently undergone something of a transformation. He, resurrected from cheesy, 70s crooner, to respected, chart topping singer. She from nervous anti-performer ridden with stage fright, to the confident, soulful artist who appears before us. Both have subtly reinvented and seemingly reinvigorated their careers, while [...]

I just re-watched the Vinyl documentary with Nicci yesterday, and burnt a copy of it to CD for one of my bosses, so of course I feel compelled to speak about record collecting today. I'm not going to discuss the process of acquiring new albums, or the analyze the psychology of someone who attempts to fill holes in their life with material possessions. I'm going to rant about how more and more bands and record labels are engaging in "limited edition" releases as a last-ditch effort to make dwindling audiences more greatly appreciate their recorded output. [...]

The general consensus these days is that Cat Power is a much more accomplished, comfortable and assured live performer than she used to. But having watched her on Later With Jools Holland , I beg to differ a little. But first, let's clear up a few things. I saw Cat Power live a few years ago at All Tomorrows Parties and was so disappointed by the shambolic performance that I walked out and went to see whoever else was playing in the smaller room. Words can't truly express how awful she [...]

Cat Power is no stranger to cover versions. With 'The Covers Record' in 2000, she stripped down and re-imagined 12 songs with little more than her voice and guitar. Ignoring the original melodies and structures to many of them, she didn't so much cover the songs as re-invent them completely. The result was a record that brought her to a wider audience. A record that introduced us to the stark, unpredictable world of Chan Marshall. Where songs were like open wounds, ready for picking. Where live performances could stumble and falter. More often [...]
By now you may have stumbled across Cat Power's cover of this James Brown song on her forthcoming album, Jukebox . Chan's is ethereal and vulnerable, but the Godfather's is all passion and pain. Dig it. He ain't the Godfather for nuthin' y'all. Lost Someone - James Brown Music MP3 music

I'm sure by now, you've heard that Cat Power has a new covers record coming out. Due for release on January 21st next year, it features covers of songs made famous by Frank Sinatra , James Brown and Bob Dylan amongst others. Whether it'll be a return to the bare acoustics of old or more of the soul funk of 'The Greatest' , remains to be seen. Maybe it'll be a combination. Who knows. One thing we can be almost certain of, is that it will [...]

For me, it's kind of hard to listen to SF singer/songwriter Emily Jane White without immediately recalling the work of Chan Marshall. However, due to the talent of EJW, she is able to stand comfortably on her own; she doesn't need to ride Ms. Marshall's coattails. By way of an introduction, check out this entry from the recently released Rolling Stone's Hot List : "Thanks to Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom and a billion bearded dudes with guitars, California's new folk movement is already blowing up. But now Emily Jane White is bringing the [...]

It's windy and it's raining. Which can mean only one thing. Yes, there's a festival happening. In an hour or so I shall be heading on over the the V Festival site to get rained on, get soaked through and hopefully catch one or two great performances. Fingers crossed the weather won't be too bad. At least, not a repeat of Glastonbury. Anyway, as I'm gonna be enjoying a weekend of live music, I thought it might be good to share some live music with you guys. So here you go. Enjoy. [...]
